  • Update: Apologies for the intro and outro sound issues! Trying to fix this so it’s less jarring.
    This video is NOT a paid promotion in any way. These are my honest opinions and all the yarns I talk about I purchased with my own money.

    I live just a. few miles from J C Rennie and have a long history knitting my dad’s jumpers with the Shetland yarn. I always knitted the jumpers on a knitting machine but hand sewn them up. The very first wash was with washing soda crystals (sodium carbonate). yes, I know! I would put a small handful in hand warm water in the bathroom ink. Agitate the water to ensure the crystals have dissolved, then add the oily garment. The oil comes out in a great rush and is fascinating. I would then rinse with plenty of warm water. Today, I would then let it float about in a wool rinse, and remove most of the water by rolling it up in a towel and standing on it. Every wash after that would be with lux flakes.

      Hi! Thank you so much for sharing your experience washing the yarn. I hope that some of the other viewers and commenters see this because it will put their minds at ease about the spinning oil and washing 💕

    Cones are great and i love to use them. But getting gauge is important and so while storing them in the cone format is easy, I rewind it onto a huge hank, tie it off in four places and wash and rinse in hot water. Very important to use the same temp for both. I use Harrisville a lot. THEN i knit a swatch and wash and block it. If you think you can get the correct gauge by knitting a sweater out of yarn coated in spinning oil be prepared for disappoint. All of my coated worsted looked like heavy fingering and once washed it looked like worsted.

    Brilliant!!! Thank you SO much for putting this together for all of us! I am a spinner and have washed quite a few just clipped fleeces and will not mind washing these cones at all. I will order from JCRennie!

      😂 So glad you liked it, and that it may have inspired some desire to try it out! Let me know what colourway(s) you end up buying if you do!
      I also most placed another order last night, but I resisted 😅

    I’m so grateful for your video! I bought a three pound cone of 100% wool yarn from a spinnery in Maine USA (I live in Vermont) caked it directly and started knitting but the oil and dryness at the same time threw me off! I will skein it and wash it! Thank you for all your lovely ideas!

    Hooray. Lovely to see a video. (After nagging 😂 ) I have used Nundle wool cones - they are my local - only an hour down the road. It is great. Comes in all their colours. Nothing fancy. But a good price.
    I have also used Millpost merino in a cone. My son wanted an Aran jumper and whilst not a big saving it was convenient and the yarn is beautiful. It is great to get exceptional Australian yarn on a cone.
    Thanks for the video. 😊

      Ooo I haven’t tried Nundle yet, but I will add them to my list of yarns to try. Thanks for the tip Lia!

    I thank you so much for this information. I had not heard of JC Rennie. I have been wanting to buy cones and buying the machine cones. You can get it at a lot better price correct? And I’ve been wanting to find some wool that isn’t real scratchy there’s gotta be some softout there I’ll keep watching to see what you think about the softness. You got the super soft is it soft?

    Thanks so much for the informative video! I have use the Holst Supersoft and find it a bit scratchy even after washing. How do you find the JC Rennie cones in terms of softness and scratchiness after washing and comparing to the Holst?

    • @theobsessivemaker
      @theobsessivemaker  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey, sorry to leave you hanging for so long. I’ve been really lax in checking up on my TH-cam channel. Honestly, I haven’t knit much with the JC Renni cones as yet. I am working on a Laulu shawl by Sari Nordland with the wool/cashmere blend at the moment, so I will report back in my next episode on the softness.
      But I totally agree with you about Holst, the super soft hasn’t really softened that much after it’s been washed. But the renunculus tee that I made in the Holst Coast has softened significantly since I first made it.

    May I ask how you store your cones? I have quite a few by now, and I'm finding it hard to figure a good way to store them. But they are some very beautiful colours that you have gotten yourself.

      I’d love to say I display them on a shelf somewhere, but I’ve gotta be honest & say they’re in a box in the cupboard until I’m want to use them 🥲
      One day I hope to have a lovely cabinet to display all of my yarns.

    Wonderful video!! I’ve had a cone of Loden in my cart for a year! How would you figure yards/meters per cone? I looked at the balls which are 270 yds/50 grams. So would I figure the same for 50gm on the cones? 🤦🏻‍♀️ Am I over thinking it 😂

    • @theobsessivemaker
      @theobsessivemaker  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Don’t we all over think it?! 😂
      Good question. Their yarn guide on the website says that it would take 5.65 m to make 1 g of yarn. Which means that a 500 g cone would be approximately 2825m. Which makes sense because if you were to compare it to the pre-scoured 50 g ball of yarn (which is 282.5 m) and times that by 10, to make up 500 g, it would be 2825 m.
      Bingo!

    Awesome comparison video! JC Rennie supersoft cashmere is my current go-to for 4 ply since I like to knit in a limited color range and even a single cone goes a long way. I wish they had more colors in their cashmere blend yarn :’)
    I have the ugie pearl supersoft and it’s actually a light cool grey from afar rather than a cream. It’s beautiful and even held double all the different colors are visible up close.
    The only concern I have with cone yarns (knitting directly off the cone) is that I have to really trust my gauge swatch. I find that the knit fabric shrinks a ton lengthwise, so I rely on row counts and math to be sure I’m knitting to the length I want. Have you experienced this?

    I’ve been itching to get cone yarns but I had no idea that they are greasy. So does that mean all cone yarns are greasy? This video is really informative. Also, I’ve never heard of JC Rennie so I’m glad. I was thinking of ordering one from Italy lol. I’m in Canada so I’ll be going through their website today.

    • @theobsessivemaker
      @theobsessivemaker  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ooo that’s a good question. I’m certainly no expert but I would expect that any come yarns sold for the purpose of machine knitting would be greasy to some extent. But just because they’re for machine knitting, does not exclude their use in hand knitting. 😅
      Thanks for watching, I’m glad you enjoyed it 💕

    Thank you! really enjoyed deep dive into JC Rennie as I've never heard about it before. I also love knitting with cone wool, but I've only used Italian tweed that also blooms. I was washing with special soap, but I was wondering what is the name of the wool wash that you've used (I live in Adelaide) :)

      Hi! Sorry for delay in reply. I use the Earth Choice wool & delicates wash (from any supermarket) for the cone yarns. For my other non greasy knits I use Soak wool wash.

    Hi, great review love finding new to me yarns. Just wondering on the stink factor. Is the JC Rennie cashmere blend stinkier than the Holst Super soft. I have used Holst but not JC Rennie. Also did you find any colour bleeding in either yarns? Thanks

    • @theobsessivemaker
      @theobsessivemaker  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Kim, thanks for watching 😃 yes I found the JCR cashmere blend stinker than both the JCR & Holst Supersoft. But also, as mentioned in the video, there is also a variation of smelliness between the 2 JCR Supersoft. So i don’t know if that’s standard or if it may just vary batch to batch.
      I think it’s worth trying out though.
      As for bleeding, my Holst yarn bled a little but the JCRs didn’t at all.
      Like Shetland yarns I think JCR is produced with colourwork knitting in mind.
      I think they’re lovely, and have a nicer hand feel than Holst. And, being Lambswool, I thing they will get softer and softer over time. 🌸

    Hi! I have a chunky lambswool from jc rennie and it smells sooo much! I actually am worried of knitting frm the cone directely.. i knitted a swatch and just by knitting the swatch i got a strange tickling on the throat and i am worry that is bc of the oil smelling...

    • @theobsessivemaker
      @theobsessivemaker  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh no, perhaps that’s the case. But don’t despair yet. Have you tried giving the swatch a good wash? If not, give it 2 long soaks and rinses with wool wash and see how it is after that.

    I had a question that you didn’t cover and that was is it prickly at all? Is it really soft? How does it feel because you never did say that

    • @theobsessivemaker
      @theobsessivemaker  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi, I had only knitting up some swatches at this stage, not a full project. But I have knitted with Holst Supersoft (check out episode 18) and it’s not the softest, it’s more of a rustic yarn. I’m now working on a garment project in the JC Rennie Lambswool cashmere blend and it promises to be rather soft to the skin. The swatch was washed up beautifully and the unwashed/greasy yarn is not bad to work with. I hope this helps. But keep watching for an upcoming episode where I talk about it.
