I know! It’s pretty much the first thing people say when talking about these cameras - fix the shape! The must be a good reason they haven’t done it. It can’t be they don’t know people want it.
Lmao y’all complaining make me laugh. Then don’t buy it 😂 not a hard concept. It’s a solo dude that made a custom mod that he liked for himself, he could have just as easily decided to keep it to himself. Ain’t no one forcing you to buy it.
I think the product was always intended to be commersial, so these "complaints" are no different than complaining about a commersial release by BlackMagic or Sony. But, of course, you can tell people to just don't buy things that they don't prefer for every product that is released, that is true. (But I guess complaints has many functions, such as communicating to producers the preferences of their fans, or trying to lobby for a certain perspective, etc.) And the complainers can similarly tell you: "if you don't like a complaint, you don't need to make a comment about their complaints. Ain't no one forcing you to react to the complaints" 🙃

Wether the product is commercial or not, I think a certain level of constructive criticism is fine. But the comments that just announce their hate of the product without reason are very strange.

the idea is great, you can get away with dc cable by using dummy battery. THe monitor should definitely be attachable, making a connector at the end of the cable, so you can mount the monitor on a handle or anywhere
Yes. I had a bit in the video with this very idea but cut it out for time. Maybe Ollie will bring out a mark ii in the future.
For me, this is what Blackmagic's next 8k should look like.
I actually hope they don’t go 8K. I’d sooner lower res with improvements in dynamic range, frame rates and rolling shutter. But yeah, their next pocket camera should use this as inspiration.

Its amazing, but with my handy work skill level I would be paying 300$ to gamble on possibly destroying my 1300$ camera.
This is exactly how I feel. Ollie did tell me he knew this would be a big sticking point for a lot of people, so he’s spent a lot of time simplifying the process and I think he’ll have some video guides to walk people through, as well.
I would love to know in your opinion, can this fit on a gimbal? Like an RS2-3 pro. With the V mount. I know is meant to be for handheld use but just one to check if It has this possibility
I don’t know. In the information I was sent it said it’s dependent on the gimbal and the size of battery. I’ll have a look if it says any else.
I would love to have this mode on my 4K but definitely it would have to be done for me.
I think there’ll be more than a few people in the same boat, me included.
I have a Tilta modded 6K and I would love to have a second BM 4k with this mod. What a combo. You just want to cradle it. It reminds me of the Hassleblads.

a rehoused version of the camera for an extra 1000$ could be a great solution to it all.
Facts lol nor is force them to watch the screen flipping to the top is actually genius turning it into a monitor might separate them from the rest
There’s gotta be a way to make that screen brighter. Thats kind of a deal breaker if the screen is where an external monitor would normally be.
That’s a good point. If you shoot outdoors in sunny conditions a lot this could be a problem.
Great review Chris👌 i think you missed one thing about the top handle - now you can use the camera strap again since you have access to all camera settings from the top and you can use a strap as a third point of contact that may bring better results then top handle.
I don't think his comment about the top handle has anything to do with stabilizing his footage. I have top handles on all of my 4Ks, 6KPro, and soon the Cinema 6K and don't think I've ever used them to help with stabilization. They're to easily pick up the camera, attach a monitor and/or other accessories, and makes it easy to attach an easyrig.
I LOVE the idea of this podtech mod and will consider doing so to one of my 4K's but wouldn't on the other because I want a cage of them with a top handle to give me flexibility to rig them however I want/need.
The idea to have a strap on this thing is super good. Straps would be ridiculous on a rig but this is like “Of Two Lands”’s rig - very minimal. And he uses it on a strap. I have a top handle to carry my camera but would much rather use a strap to not have to carry my camera lol

This modification makes this camera more suitable to grab and go. Take it out of your bag, add a lens and battery, and you're ready to start capturing footage, mostly B roll, for extended hours.
This mod doesn't suit this camera for documentary work. This mod interferes with adding a shotgun and mic and a lav mic system to your camera.
Like a lot of tools, this modification is for some and not for others.

I would advise everyone against these kinds of mods. I was crazy enough to mod my previous 6k with the tilta mod and it was a terrible decision. This mod does looks amazing and I wish the OG design was closer to it but you might lose your camera in the process and trust me it's not a good feeling. Mine worked OK for 2 weeks and then the screen started having issues. Eventually the whole screen and the side buttons died. By the end the screen wouldn't even hold in place. It's not worth the risk.
Yeah, you really need to know what you're doing if you're going to attempt this sort of mod - it's beyond my skill level.
I like it, its brilliant, Im still a fan of Camera cages - Tilta, Small rig wondering if I can still rig-cage this thing up, because I like having my camera on Rails. and top handle
I think you can half cage it.
I remember with the Tilta mod a few years ago the tiltscreen ribbon cable is pretty difficult to replace our source the parts even- which seems like its the same issue this time leading to this design. If longer or even an adapter could be found for the display ribbon cable, a lot of cool hinge solutions and complete rigs could be realized
they could use a usb-c cable for connection, make the screen detachable and connected via usb-c to the camera and use a longer cable for connection so that one can mount it anywhere on the camera.
Do you have a problem with sony tough g sd cards being a little bit bigger than other sd cards? Does it get stuck sometimes or you feel it scratch the inside of the sd card slot?

I was thinking exactly the same thing. Would be awesome to keep using my extra hand grip from Smallrig. Just makes the handheld shooting so much nicer.
@@jerrytsunami seriously! It looks like it can be ran with the setup, and having that half cage on the port side so you can have the cable locks would be amazing! Plus I would be able to run my follow focus system as well.

If they had design the monitor are removable and new design monitor cable. That will be prefect for everyone!
I’d love it if they could do that. Probably a challenge from a design point of view. The cable would need to deliver pictures power and data but if it’s possible it would be a big seller I’d imagine.
The 6k's IR cut filter doesn't get damaged by dots? I always have to change the IR cut filter on my Black Magic 4K

Yeah there is a lot of people wanting a detachable monitor- would be a killer feature. I don’t know of any cages that fit with this mod. A number of people say that their half cages fit but I don’t have any experience with that.
Except for the cable it seems like a nice modification. Those ribbon cables weren't made for wiggling.

Thank you for this review. I found out about this earlier this past week and got really excited about bringing my 4k back into the game. I have the PCC6K pro, which is my primary cam, but feel I'd really like to have a small run an gun option. I've rigged it out in the past to run v-mounts, but the size and weight pushed it into the realm of too cumbersome for what I wanted it for. I had questions about a few things that your video addressed. I feel pretty comfortable in getting the mod at this point. Regardless, the camera isn't getting used much now anyway so I don't really have much to lose.
Dude needs a 2.0 re-design with a ribbon through a top handle. Because unless this is a stationary tripod/Dana,
Dolly only cam, it means nothing for run and gun cam operators.
It's going to be very dependant on the shooting style of the individual as too wether this is useful or not.

It’s not one of the cameras the kit will work with. I think Ollie said he will look at doing it for other cameras if there is enough interest.

I think that the perfect combination for this mod is the Wooden Camera PL mount for the blackmagic 6K. Combine this new form factor with PL lenses would be awesome👌🏽🎥

We need this feature in a box style camera like the Komodo, and screen should be able to flip up and face whichever direction with the hinge.
Yes, that would be very cool. I can’t understand Blackmagic’s reluctance to do it. So many people want a box style camera from them.

Interesting. BM warned against using an external battery to charge an internal one for fear of over-powering the camera: one of our 4Ks required an expensive repair which seemed to have been linked to this practice. Does the modification do anything to prevent this?
Hey, man. I honestly don’t know the answer to that. How does the camera know the difference between an external battery and the mains supply? Do you now remove the battery every time you shoot with an external V-mount?
@@ChristopherMichaelLaw Since the repair we only ever use a single external battery: we don't use V-mount but rather a Sony with an adapter or a larger 12v block.
I wonder if the 6k pro has the same flaw.

not a full one. Some half cages will "probably" work. Ive not tested, but can't see why.

I prefer the Tilta solution where you get the flip-up screen and the SSD slot from the back, while still letting you add a regular cage and other accessories like usual.

Once I upgrade to studio cam 4k g2’s I might do this with three I have though. The v mount would be handy so I wouldn’t have to carry as much when I go outside of the studio. Be a nice minimalist rig.
