I have a Soviet Army dress uniform hat. My parents bought it for me in Germany from a guy on the street selling them from a couple of duffel bags, not long after the dissolution of the USSR. I think they paid 5DM. I keep it on a shelf in my office, with a little sign that says, "The Triumph of Capitalism" since it is sort of a bring-back trophy from the Cold War.

Fun fact, the Glengarry actually DOES have a military connection. Many highland regiments in the British Army have been issued with them throughout history.
From my icon you can see me earring an issue glengarry. Think the last time they were worn in action was by they Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in Aden in 1967. They may have worn them in Northern Ireland. For some reason they were slow to adopt the balmoral/tos for use in the field.
The Canadian military still uses them for their highland reserve and highland cadet units. Also for there are two different tams, One with a red and white check banner around it for pipers and a strait black one for drummers.
2000 videos is actually a really crazy number considering if each is released once a day that is about 5.47 years. And lets say the average video length is 15 minutes, thats 30,000 minutes or 500 hours or 20.8 days of watch time.
And thats not including footage that didnt make it into the videos, or that got put on InRange TV channel. Ian has probably made several thousands of hours of footage.

Don't wear badges associated with the military. The USSR has a lot of different badges for civil services. They're hard to find sometimes, but you'll be surprised. I wear my Ushanka on the regular (army and an MVD blue Ushanka) and just use non-military civil service badges. Hasn't gotten me into trouble and is a lot easier to explain to people than wearing a fucking hammer and sickle

Ian, the Finnish army caps you had are modelled after the "verikauha", literally "blood ladle", which was worn throughout and after WWII. It's a better design than the current ones, but nowadays we're equipped with usual caps, without the buttons! Also, you can actually find the FDF uniform in Varusteleka, under "M05 RES", and they are better quality versions of the standard issue ones, legally permitted for use during service. They do cost a bit, yes, but for authentic FDF uniforms, hit them up!
There's no "right way" to wear a beret - depends on the country and force. Most of the Brits wear it with the badge centered over the left eye and the band clearly visible. Except the Paras, who always have to be different - they seem to wear the badge half-way to the left ear, and they do a weird thing pulling the front down to hide the band. www.forces.net/services/tri-service/ultimate-guide-wearing-your-beret And of course the French wear their beret the exact opposite way - badge on the RIGHT right, beret sloping over the LEFT ear. Except the French Commandos, who wear it the "normal" way. So yeah - there's no "right" way.

Berets are ugly and useless. I wore one for twenty years, and back then we wore them in the field as well. They're not warm, and they don't keep the sun or rain out of your eyes. In British service the first troops to wear berets were the armoured corp, principally because they are semi functional inside an armoured vehicle. They went from that, to the height of military fashion world wide. Why they are popular is a mystery for the ages.
Correction at 5:13. Glengarries are military - worn with No. 2 Dress in the Scottish regiments and regimental / battalion pipe bands. Wore one myself back in the day. Also worn by Canadian and South African "Highland" regiments like the Seaforths of Canada and the Cape Town Highlanders. They are sometimes also seen in combat paintings / photographs up to the Great War. Also, the Balmoral is called a TOS (short for Tam O' Shanter) in the military.

The Finns also use their desert camo in Iraq. I'm stationed right now on FOB Qayyarah West, and there's a Finnish detachment here helping train the Iraqi Army. They're great guys. Their camp within the base is named for "Larry Thorne", as a nod to their being based with Americans.
Well Finnish Defence Forces uses the desert pattern in many places, since we have many peacekeeper detachments in arid hot places. Deployed countries at the moment Afghanistan, Lebanon, Kosovo, Iraq, Mali, Somalia. Also the peacekeeping isn't stopping anytime soon, since it is legally mandated base task of FDF. So it actually makes plenty sense to have a desert/arid pattern on issue.
Ian wasn't the Chieftan a former member in the Irish military prior to his immigration to the US and service in the Reserves. I do believe that he actually did a video about his experiences with some of the weapons he used while in the Irish military. Ian, the Finnish army caps you had are modelled after the "verikauha", literally "blood ladle", which was worn throughout and after WWII. It's a better design than the current ones, but nowadays we're equipped with usual caps, without the buttons! Also, you can actually find the FDF uniform in Varusteleka, under "M05 RES", and they are better quality versions of the standard issue ones, legally permitted for use during service. They do cost a bit, yes, but for authentic FDF uniforms, hit them up!

There's no "right way" to wear a beret - depends on the country and force.
Most of the Brits wear it with the badge centered over the left eye and the band clearly visible. American airborne follow the British tradition. When legs had the black beret, they had a standard that made it look like a bakers toque.

Berets are ugly and useless. I wore one for twenty years, and back then we wore them in the field as well. They're not warm, and they don't keep the sun or rain out of your eyes. In British service the first troops to wear berets were the armoured corp, principally because they are semi functional inside an armoured vehicle. They went from that, to the height of military fashion world wide. Why they are popular is a mystery for the ages.

Correction at 5:13. Glengarries are military - worn with No. 2 Dress in the Scottish regiments and regimental / battalion pipe bands. Wore one myself back in the day. Also worn by Canadian and South African "Highland" regiments like the Seaforths of Canada and the Cape Town Highlanders.
They are sometimes also seen in combat paintings / photographs up to the Great War.
Also, the Balmoral is called a TOS (short for Tam O' Shanter) in the military.

For example Jaloviina was served to finnish soldiers in the summer of 1942 when the Finnish marshal Mannerheim turned 75. So it is very traditional.
The Finns also use their desert camo in Iraq. I'm stationed right now on FOB Qayyarah West, and there's a Finnish detachment here helping train the Iraqi Army. They're great guys. Their camp within the base is named for "Larry Thorne", as a nod to their being based with Americans.

Well Finnish Defence Forces uses the desert pattern in many places, since we have many peacekeeper detachments in arid hot places.
Deployed countries at the moment Afghanistan, Lebanon, Kosovo, Iraq, Mali, Somalia.
Also the peacekeeping isn't stopping anytime soon, since it is legally mandated base task of FDF. So it actually makes plenty sense to have a desert/arid pattern on issue.

Ian wasn't the Chieftan a former member in the Irish military prior to his immigration to the US and service in the Reserves. I do believe that he actually did a video about his experiences with some of the weapons he used while in the Irish military. For example, if you ever do a 2AGm participation video with a Steyr Aug, which I believe was a long arm in service with the Irish Army, this could be of use? If you ever do another collaboration video with him, perhaps the whole idea of the Irish Army hat can be part of that collaboration.

The FFL retirement home is a fantastic institution with a nice uniform museum, and excellent vineyard, and a military shop, as well as a bar and restaurant.
All run by old legionnaires that will be very happy to see you there.
Just be very careful in the bar. These guys have a lifelong bar ambush experience and you might not ever be able to remember how you left the place.

The wedge worn by the Royal Canadian Air Cadets has a similar feature to the Finnish caps where the sides fold down to cover most of the head. Lots of squadrons sewed the flaps in the upright position to stop people from messing with them

At the German Army we have the same "problem" with our hats you showed. Every company has its own style. When you have to switch to another company you have to learn a new way or to be unique........and we all know thats never happen ;-)
