    Beautiful quality print. I watched it with 20's jazz playing. Thanks for uploading.

    Images rather than words, even in the silent era.

    I liked this picture. For me it's a story about a good boy, who lived in a rich family, lived in no trouble and grown as a sweet, idealistic young man, who believed people. Most part of his lived with equal young people, had great future and saw no harm from others. And suddenly he faced the real world, where people can go over the heads in order to save themselves. At first that girl from the shop and his "friend". There is not even a slight mention about his friend at least trying to find something out about the hero. Then father, who mostly thought about "what would people say" instead of trying to actually find out what happened. He did not even try to listen to his son. Then his wife who saw a harmless, trustful and in love with her young man and took advantage and etc. He never before met people, who can do everything for money, jewelries and etc. For him money have much less value. At the end his world was totally ruined. He was not used to the reality.
    For me it's a picture about how our actions, decisions and actions, decisions can influence or even ruin ours and others lives. And we sometimes do not understand it.
    It's a picture about how cruel life can be to trustful and sweet people, who honor friendship, true love and etc.

    Ivor Novello was 34 when he played an 18 year old schoolboy in this film. Of course the same is still true today when teenagers are often played by actors in their twenties.

    Where's the music? The music tells part of the story. It was in there originally.

    It's a beautiful story about honor and dignity! I loved the way Hitchcock artistically reflected the 'downhill' (stairs, subway, elevator, etc.). Brilliant! Great cast, and great image quality! Thank you for sharing! I can't wait to make it a review for my Writing Blog! :-)

    IT is a superb print. Fantastic. But it is very sad, that there is no music track added. WHY NOT? This kind of high class restorations always are released on Blu Ray/ DVD with at least one music score added, sometimes with two.

    As all the other comments say, a very good print copy. And I'm glad I didn't watch this expecting a good story.... Just some slightly interesting history of Hitchcock. The story tells us that a betrayal by a girl,and a father's turning away, led to an inability to operate one's own life. What a crock! He was dumb as a sack of hammers. Glad there is Fast Forward.

      Yes come to think of it I first got to see this film in Germany in 2003. I have seen it a few times since and every time it was without a score. I never really gave it much thought until then.

      240 to a pound and 480 halfpennies. I've a farthing dated 1945 so what was that like in 1927?

    • @davidw.robertson448
      @davidw.robertson448 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      But not that much. That's why all the little boys were queuing up to buy the same box of chocolates for a ha'penny. Don't forget this film was made after the inflation of the Great War and the early twenties.

    I don't really buy the ending here. There's no telling the length of time Roddy was going through all that stuff. Between the time he was expelled and his return home can't have been long enough to get right back to school by the "next term." Just doesn't sit right with me. Other than that, AH never fails to give me the creeps, e.g., Roddy's opium-induced hallucinations...awful! (I was a little surprised there was no soundtrack?)

    I wish there were an equally good print of Jamaica Inn, also silent and from the same time frame. Last time I checked it was so bad, almost unwatchable.

      @@Khamomil Yes, I do not disagree. I am in the happy position of having seen all 57 feature films Hitchcock made, from "The Pleasure Garden" to "Family Plot" [except for "Waltzes From Vienna", which I have never sighted.] Admittedly some of the silents are badly in need of restoration.
