There was the horror of slavery, the pride of the feudal aristocracy, and the hope of true unity involved in the war that set the tone for all the world for decades to come. Science and technology were stripping away the delusions of the proud land holding near baronies of the South that owned blacks outright and poor whites through the power of poverty. The Union had its faults and was fracturing, but this song gave voice to their causes and a renewed grit to their resolve. Without it and its binding of faith to the secular causes, the North might have buckled from the savage costs of the war... and in so doing never gave heart to those across the globe to stand up and fight for themselves as well. This was militarily the foreshadowing conflict of the nightmare that we call WWI. I've ever heard the late Whitney Houston singing this song to her own R&B style at a stadium, & yet I always feel like it would be much better sung by the highly trained professional vocalists or soldiers when it comes to this song. I'm convinced that the national anthem of any country is best when it would be sung with the utmost respect, solemnity & moderation. That is to say, what's the simplest & most accurate would be the greatest & most beautiful. (I'm sorry, but I don't think Whitney Houston's R&B has this kind of simplicity & accuracy.)
