Interesting that Subaru put extra banjo filters in these early EJ255's. I have an MY07 Legacy GT (which is when we first got the EJ255 here in Australia) and checked the turbo one at 170,000km (about 106,000 miles) and it along with the turbo was perfect. I changed the filter regardless as insurance, but it was super clean. I intend to do the other one when I do the belt.
What I have noticed though, is that USDM cars seem to have a lot more issues with turbo failures. Here in Australia it's relatively rare despite running the banjo filters still.
After seeing your oil filter comparison, I believe this may be a key issue. Most other markets useh the superior Japanese made filter, and turbo failures seem to only be the realm of very high milage/neglected engines.

Love the content. My 06 sti is throwing p0011 and p0021. Did timing belt kit, replaced ocv solenoids, changed cam sensors, check banjo bolts but light is still on. It idles fine with the light on but if cleared it wants to die at idle unless the a/c is on. What a pain. 😓

    • @derikmonson1941
      @derikmonson1941 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah. Sadly it needed a new block and heads. So I went forged internals, new case halves and built heads. The deck bolts came loose and started shooting metal shavings around and clogged the cam gears twice.

21ft lb strips the threads easily on alot of engines. seen it happen on a few engines, I know that's torque the manual calls for but these threads are crazy weak. at this point I dont even take the chance with a torque wrench I just grab a 17mm box wrench and go by feel like an oil drain plug.

Just happened to me, which is what brings me here. Thanks for the advice. Screw the torque wrench. I’m hoping a new bolt will bite and not leak. I only saw one small small shred of aluminum in the threads of the bolt that came from the head. Hoping it’ll still seal.

So I got both a p0011 and p0021 code on my 2006 wrx. I've looked every where I possibly could for a fix. Everyone says that it's a banjo bolt issue. However, when I removed mine there were not filters. Looks like someone already took them out. My turbo has been making a rattling noise for a while now and I'm pretty sure it was straved of oil. I've had issues with the car consuming a crap ton of oil. After about 1k miles after an oil change I'm already adding more oil. I can't find any leaks. But I'm not sure on how to fix my p0011 and p0021 code.

love the video. BTW I am planing a head gasket on my outback 2.5L SOHC,
1-how much should i expect a machine shop to charge for resurfacing each head?
2-and should I ask them to "vacuum" test the heads, before resurfacing? is there extra cost?
3-also should I provide any parts to the machine shop?
4-Finally I will buy the felpro gasket, should I get the whole set for 150 or just the gaskets that i will need?
    thanks a bunch

I would order a Subaru engine reseal kit. Runs about $350, but has every gasket in the engine. I'd have the machine shop hot tank the heads, pressure/leak test them, check the valve seats, valve guides, and clearances. The works usually runs me $400-500 per pair. Usually I take the machine shop the valve stem seals out of the seal kit.

Would my 2006FXT have been shipped from the factory without the AVCS filter screens in them due to this (October 2005) service advisory being a known issue? I am the original owner and only had the filter screen supplying oil to the turbocharger removed, but I just got my first P0021 (driver side AVCS), and so I see other owners have had to remove all the remaining screens to fix this. Perhaps my mechanic already removed the hardest one to get access to that is just 4-5 inches forward of the turbocharger itself as you point out.

  • @BadJo0Jo0

For these banjo bolts. I noticed on my 04 Forester XT, they dont have the hump. Not sure if the previous owner replaced the banjo bolts with the non filter ones. Did Subaru have banjo bolts with filters that had no hump on them? Just want to make sure before I waste time trying to get all of them out.

This is probably a stupid question, but does the banjo feed hole need to line up with the oil line flow? I pulled all the filters on my '05 Outback XT, and when I put them back in, I made sure to line them back up (even if it did mean slightly over-torquing). Though the turbo feed banjo bolt took me over an hour to do because you're almost blind back there. Normally banjo bolts are omni-directional, but I noticed that these lack the oil feed cuts that traditional banjo bolts have, which made me worried about them being directional.

    • @MrSubaru1387

FSM Diagnostic flowchart for this code.
Step 1 - CHECK CURRENT DATA.
1 ) Start the engine and let it idle.
      2) Check the AVCS system operating angle using Subaru Select Monitor or general scan tool.
      Is the AVCS system operating
      angle approximately O°?
      Yes: Go to Step 2
No: Check the following item and repair or replace if necessary.
      - Oil pipe (clog)
      - Oil flow control solenoid valve
(clog or dirt of oil routing, setting of spring)
      - Intakecamshaft (dirt, damage of
      camshaft)
Step 2 - CHECK CURRENT DATA.
1 ) Drive with acceleration and deceleration at 80 km/h (50 MPH) or less.
      NOTE:
Drive to an extent that the duty output of oil flow control solenoid valve increases.
      2) Measure the AVCS system operating angle and oil flow control solenoid valve duty output using Subaru Select Monitor or general scan
      tool.
When the oil flow control solenoid valve duty output exceeds 10%, is the AVCS system operating angle approx. O°?
Yes: Check the following item and repair or replace if necessary.
      - Oil pipe (clog)
      - Oil flow control solenoid valve
(clog or dirt of oil routing, setting of spring)
      - Intake camshaft
      (dirt, damage of
      camshaft)
No: Perform the following procedures, and clean the oil routing.
Replace the engine oil and idle the engine for 5 minutes, and then replace the oil filter and engine oil.
So yes, a clogged union bolt screen could be the cause.
