low cd figures are thrown about but everyone seems to ignore frontal area which makes the cd figure relative, ef crx, delsol, mx5, mr2, mrs, calibra these are the kings ,imo, new cars just got too big still at least with the new transmissions theyve often got awesome ratio for great highway fe. I love these videos btw. My uncle had one of your books i read a lot 20 odd years ago.

I wonder why does he not have a video on the Calibra, it held the record for nearly 10 years after all.

@@StefanKrunic As a Calibra owner my self, it's funny but most of the aerodynamics enchantments are focused on the rear of the car. Sure, you have the small headlights with small grill and radiator openings, but the rear has fuel tank diffusor, rear bumper design for less drag (there is a small kink in the bumper going outwards) and an aerodynamic boot lid with a small ducktail. Also the plastic side skirts play a good part as well.

I've had a strange desire to have one of these Mirages for a while. Guess I'm a sucker for underpowered econo hatch backs.
Too bad it's still too expensive to buy as a "fun" project and not something I would probably want to drive on a day-to-day basis as my main car.

Ji Julian, I work for a mitsubishi dealership, and can tell you there's different spoilers for the Mirage/space star. The white car had the early spoiler, the pink car has a later model, but I think there's yet another type

The Proton Iriz has that kind of spoiler, side fins and all. But, sometimes I think they look like they're mounted horizontally instead of following the roofline,. I know mine looks that way. Or they might not have the best fit (not a brand known for the best build quality) so mine might just not have been mounted properly. I'd have to double check.

I have done some cfd on a generic hatchback with/out one of these spoilers, also over a range of inclinations. As it turns out those spoilers do increase downforce but it is predominately under the car, despite the roughness. Reducing lift on the roof tends to be the best you can get out of these directly. However, saying that a poor one/one lift/drag ratio is present for high inclinations.

Good morning from London, I've been watching your videos as a novice, as I have a vauxhall/opel corsa D hatchback (limited edition), and was about to install a rear wing upward facing spoiler with canards on it to make the air flow upwards for more downforce however now I'm having second thoughts, I would like to make the car faster, what would you recommend interms of the spoiler and front side splitters, (given that you already taught us how important and undertray is to get more air under the car as possible,
An upward facing spoiler spoiler increases the wake size right? Wake increase means more drag and stability yet a slower car from what I understand,
Would it be better to have a downwards inclined spoiler for more lift/speed?
All in all my car isnt the fastest so I want to make it as aerodynamic as possible, would you be able to shed some advice?
    Kind regards
    Joshua Mbelolo

Could you review the Tesla model Y? The performance model has a very small hatch spoiler added, does it do anything? The rear of my Y gets unbelievably dirty, which I feel is because the aerodynamics.

    • @JulianEdgar
      @JulianEdgar  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes it is likely that the performance model's rear spoiler reduces lift. The rear of the car getting dirty is indeed aero, but there's no easy way of improving that without increasing drag. If someone wants to lend me a Model Y, I am happy to do some testing.

@@JulianEdgar well its a city car and its normal place of existence is in the city around 20-30mph where aero doesn't really matter. Its hardly going to be doing 70MPH on a motorway everyday for miles and miles where you would see a benefit to the good aero.

    • @JulianEdgar

I see lots of small cars on freeways? Sure it will be less helpful in slow moving city traffic, but the rear spoiler is useful and functional on that car.
