I’ve learned so much from this guy. For all you popular brand buyers, try out what he recommends you’ll be blown away how much better tequila actually tastes.
When I started trying additive-free tequila I found out that I don't really like tequila. Now all I drink is Mezcal which is also additive-free by nature.
I thought I loved Tequila until I tried Mezcal and never looked back. I made the switch 5 years ago but unfortunately the Mezcal market is being flooded with investors and I can see the same trend that happened to tequila happening to mezcal. What are some additive free Mezcals you like?
More videos please! Also, I know Fortaleza is good, but since it’s hard to find can you do a video for 3 to 5 alternatives for each the blanco, repo and anejo?
@@datguy9408 The blanco is really good too, not a pure sipper but very passable for the price point. Try the Siete Leguas blanco, a little pricey but worth every penny.
I found a bottle of forta about a month ago after establishing a good relationship with a local store. I’ve bought all the additive free tequila they have in stock and they noticed it and now they’ll hold a bottle of forta for me any time they get it in. I’ve now gotten 2 repos and 1 blanco. Waiting to see if they get any winter blends in for the season. I opened the anjeo September 29th; I’m really trying to be frugal with it but it’s so damn good! I have a glass probably once to twice a week but there’s been a couple days I have more than one lol. Me and some buddies are having some tastings tomorrow and we’re all bringing a bottle of our rarest stuff so it might be gone tomorrow 😆. My buddies are whisky drinkers so they are bringing their hard to find whiskies I’m the only tequila drinker but they are interested in trying it and I figured an anejo is gonna be the best one to go with
I absolutely love Clase Azul. I’m not a fan of fire breathing, throat burning tequilas. I like the sweetness and vanilla notes, tho I still wouldn’t be able to drink it on ice.

To the ppl saying they love clase azul and that its great and he’s wrong etc… I think the biggest issue is that people seem to forget your not paying 200 for a great tequila, your paying 200 for a hand made bottle…. That happens to have some off the shelf 10 dollar tequila inside 💀 people see rhe fancy bottle and price tag and assume the tequila must be high end, its all just marketing. Doesnt mean your not allowed to like it, just means your paying way more than you should for that quality of tequila
Let’s be honest it drinks way better than a cheap tequila. It does go down smooth, the problem is it’s artificial making it sweeter and smoother than a high quality tequila naturally would be, but that’s what also makes it more appealing to the average person who doesn’t have experience drinking tequila
Big fan Lui. What took you so long to review Clase Azul? I too have discovered some great additive free brands because of you. I do enjoy Clase Azul tremendously and am a bit shocked you were so down on it. It’s staying on my top shelf with the others. Appreciate your insight as always.
Lmao money is what took so long. I didn't want to spend $200 on a tequila I know is not good haha but happy to finally have done it. And hey man, I may say things forcefully but at the end of the day if you like something, great! Go for it.
I found your channel after trying Clase Azul and having the same reaction you did. Fortunately, having many friends who return home to Mexico once a year, I have had the opportunity to try some tequilas that are way out of my price range here. Gran Corralejo, Casa Layenda Centennario, Rey Sol, etc… After watching your videos I tried El Tesoro Añejo and was blown away by the flavor. And price. You have turned me on to some excellent tequilas, and in turn this gringo has turned some Mexicans on to some great tequilas they have never tried. This week, after 6 months of fruitless searching, I found what I believe to be the only bottle of Fortaleza Añejo in South Carolina. I don’t have the words to describe it like you do, but suffice to say it’s not hype. I never imagined tequila could taste like that. The hair stood up on my arms. The only problem now will be trying not to drink it all before I find another bottle. Thank you, Lui
A friend of mine offered me a pour of Clase Azul. I was excited to try it as I had been eyeballing it for a while. I couldn't get past the syrupy sweetness of it. I thought it was because I've been off sugar for five years, but it was overwhelming to me. I'm glad I found your channel, I've been venturing out on tequila lately, but it's so hard to find reputable reviews and recommendations. Thank you for being a great resource!
Does 818 really taste just like Clase Azul? I might or might not have a bottle that I refill for the youngins so they think they’re big balling when I’m just trying to keep them out of my good stuff? Not looking for really good tequila or a better tasting, less expensive alternative to Clase Azul. I’m looking for something that tastes like Clase Azul that is also cheap.
Ese, those are some tall pours for “sampling” do you finish them all, pour them back in the bottle, take multiple cuts to assemble your video, or something other? Keep up the good work
Lui great Tequila recommendations!!! Wanted to ask Have you thought making videos about your favorite red wines or champagnes? I would be really interested watching you make a video about it.
I do sip Clase on occasion and understand the Mexican talavera bottle design with accidental bell cap. Everything in the way that the tequila is produced outside of the additive(s) is top notch. While up to 1% additives have been allowed in tequila and other spirits and wine usually to help stabilize flavor profile, things have gotten out of control in the modern world of super concentrates. I also don’t like overly oaked tequilas that play to the whisk(e)y crowd to which I also belong often to the detriment of the beautiful agave notes and minerality. That said, my go to loves include El Tesoro, Fortaleza, G4, Tequila Ocho and Siete Leguas with and more recent additions including Cimarron, El Tequilaño, Insolito, Mijenta and Volcan. Keep on tasting!
Hey Lui, Watcha reckon of Artenom 1146? The few feedback I've read on it describes a butterscotch finish that sounds like it may appeal to me... wondering if you've had any experience with this one>
Hey lui i m huge fan your and thanks for making this video and i really dont like clase azul repo and i really really do like additive free tequila like don fulano some other additive free tequila and also my favourite fortaleza tequila too thanks so much lui 👍
Don fulano is really good juice, so is G4. It's ok to talk about Fortaleza a lot......it's one of the best tequilas out there! Solid choices my friend 👍
I'm by no means a Tequila buff or expert, in fact I only started into home bartending in summer last year. But I wouldn't dream of buying a fancy bottle for that kind of money, especially not with additives in the content. So far, regarding Tequila, it's Topanito for mixing, Mayaciel when I'm feeling fancy, and Patron for special occasions. I should add that I'm located in Germany and this is what's readily available. There are a lot more brands I can get my hands on (Sierra, ofc, but Corralejo or 1800 are also common) but, like I said, I've only just begun dipping my toe into the water. Anything that's not 100% Blue Agave I disregard on principle, and I tend to steer clear of anything below 40% ABV. So thanks for the pointers, cheers! 🥂
Lui, not sure why your video came up in my recommended, but I'm here for it. That being said, stop jacking the price up (and lowering the availability) on the truly good tequilas!!! Let those who think Clase Azul, 818, and Patron continue to buy those.
I have never had this tequila but for that hundred dollar plus price tag I just can't justify spending the money. Now I would recommend the Oaxaca glass for Tequila. For less money I have enjoyed Campo Azul Anejo and Don Julio Anejo and so many other Tequilas out there. Tonight I will be enjoying Casa Nobel Anejo for the first time.
I would like a response please to my question please . I have tried all 3 of these many times and when it comes to repo I prefer the Don Fulano it is magnificent, out of the 3 when it comes to blanco I would go with the Fortaleza and if I am going Anejo ill go Don Fulano...But my fave Blanco I am drinking now is Tepozan (100% additive free)
Well that's crazy that out of all of the ones that I recommend you have Fortaleza because people are upset that they can't get any so I would just stick with that friend
Great Video. Appreciate you're reviews on Tequila. Have you tried Black Sheep Tequila? Its a newer med range priced Tequila but its pretty damn amazing IMO.
I haven't bought clase azul in a while, my bottle has the agave leaf on the bottle not the flower, and it WAS delicious. Could they have changed something since then?
I think he sometimes exaggerates how bad a tequila tastes when he knows it has additives. The idea with additives is to create a consistent, smooth product that appeals to someone wanting to drink tequila, so wandering too far away from the original flavor is probably not the intent unless the target market is beginner drinkers buying because of a celebrity's name. The side effect of additives is apparently more intense hangovers, and somebody with a highly educated palette might be able to tell the difference. Personally, my palette isn't educated enough to tell, I just take his word for it. In short, you'll need to buy another bottle to know for sure, lol.
I personally think it's delicious and really well made. I was just down at their distillery recently. Now I don't usually make recommendations based on price because I think everybody has their own separate budget. I do think it's a very tasty tequila but it is relatively expensive
Thank you for your informative input. I don't know anything when it comes to what a bad or good tequila is, so your video (and reply) made it easy. Keep up the good vids 👍
I've learned a lot from your channel with regard to finding great tequilas with no additives. Thanks. I don't know why you find the need to come off as a hater of brands you don't like, however. You come off as the ultimate arbiter of all tastes for tequila. While it's true that some tequilas are made with more care and additives as others, just because somebody likes something you don't doesn't make them wrong. Taste is subjective. While I prefer El Tesoro, Siete Lequas, and El Tapatío for my cocktails, I still like the flavor or Don Julio. There's something about it that pleases my palate. And in the end, it's also important to note that not everyone has the ability to make the distinctions you do when it comes to tequila. The same air of superiority that people who don't know the difference and want a brand to signify their great taste comes through in your tone about which tequilas to drink. Then again, approaching the subject matter with the invective you use may make your channel more appealing to a bigger audience. Unfortunately, it doesn't work for me. And for the record, I too hate Casamigos tequila! It's like vanilla candy.
Lui Fernandes - You pour like I do... I like a little Jacuzzi pour ;-) So far.... Don Fulano, Quatro Anejo, Fortaleza....all great! It's true you can't find Fortaleza at most stores....Haven't tried Cazcanes - something to look forward to! But I have some suggestions to try: Ocho Estate Reposado - here you get single estate sourced agave, absolutely you taste the mineral-rich flavors of the soil, smooth and very approachable, for the $$. I also enjoy Tapatio Reposado, as a close analog to El Twsoro (also a similar profile, earthy, rich flavors of the lowlands, and ironically both are made in the same distillery)....last, I would suggest an AMAZING Blanco: Cascahuin! Not my usual jam, but the brightness and hihgly developed flavor profile is pleasant and surprising, for a Blanco. Keep it up Lui!!
I saw an empty Clase Azul bottle on a shelf at an Airbnb in Big Bear, California one time. I did take it down and played with that bell cap for a bit, it was fun. But I do always wonder if any spirit sold in a super ornate bottle like that, is it really even that good. Luckily Clase Azul is out of my budget. One of the craziest tequila brands I’ve seen is Casino Azul. Their bottles are super fancy with those ornamental agaves and roses inside their bottles. But the craziest one I’ve seen is that one 1.75ml bottle that’s literally shaped like an aircraft carrier, and the one that’s shaped like a Jaguar. It’s ridiculous, because if they go to the trouble to make those bottles that flashy and over the top, you might as well buy a bottle of Fortaleza if you can find one. That stuff is excellent.
To me calling out the brands that use additives is perfect keep doing it. Hopefully they see their sales plummet and learn how to produce additive free tequilas that taste even better. Companies that use diffusers especially don’t care about the agave growing to maturity in order to make a good tequila they just add additives. If you tried one of their tequilas as a blanco without additives it would taste like total crap. I say keep calling them out and teach people what a real tequila should taste like. There was no additives in the old days, from picking only fully mature agave to cooking and distilling is a real art where there is no shortcuts to produce great tequila.
This is all so true.. it tastes like agave honey and I got really into it when a bartender (of course) poured me some for my birthday. Then I did more exploring so at least I have to give it credit for being my introduction to high level tequilas. But I am glad I moved past it
So I finally got my hands on a bottle of Fortaleza. And yeah, it is the best tequila I've ever had in my life. Better than Siete Leguas, better than Mijente, better than Lalo, better than El Tosoro. And yes, better than Clase Azul. I haven't had Cazcanes yet, so I can't speak on that, but yeah. Fortaleza is what real, hand-crafted tequila from 100 years ago would've tasted like. It is sublime.
As someone from Mexico the most expensive tequila I’ve ever bought is Jose Cuervo, not because I can’t afford something more expensive but bcuz I can’t taste the different tequila “flavors”
If Jose Cuervo is the most expensive one you have bought then you haven’t had the chance to even try the more expensive flavors to even know if you like it.
I wish I knew this before. Today I ordered a Clase and a Ocho, blanco each. I fell I love with tequila about 2 years ago. Me and a friend went to a restaurant where you get real authentic mexican food is served. For dessert we hab a Padre Azul Añejo and that opened my mind for this holy stuff Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
Loved the first 10 seconds with the “small voice” 😂. None of the three are available in Quebec. Just came back from Philly, and upon your recommendations, the only good tequilas available were El Tesoro and Tres Agaves. Funny things in Philly: 1 - Lobos is behind the cashier so you can’t steel it and 2- almost all the newspaper stands are sponsored by Casamigos 😆😆😆
I bartend in Philadelphia. Our state runned stores don't offer much. I was able to have our beverage manager get El Tesoro. The only 1 out of 5 suggestions he could get.
Pennsylvania stores are run by the state and probably why the selection is so poor. That being said, the prices are usually pretty spot on vs. Delaware and Jersey, who can mark everything up. It's a shitty trade off, selection isn't great, but prices are not inflated.
I really don’t drink but I do buy al kind of liquor So when I see a nice bottle, i buy it 😁 Don’t matter if is tequila, whisky, cognac, rum or brandy My question for you is What expensive tequila is worth buying ? Sorry one more😁 Can you do a video with Asombroso tequila and let your viewers know what you think Thank you
Fortunately I found a Fortaleza Añejo last year and havent opened it until I find another one... by the looks of it Im never gonna be opening this bottle lol 😆
@Lui_Fern omg awesome I just picked it up in blanco Which one do you prefer between Blanco and the gold reposado? Also do you like ketel one for vodka? BTW I read your responses to some of the rude hater comments and I laugh lol

As someone from tequila, Jalisco and who's family has been there since before the town blew up . We don't drink any of these . They are overpriced and are fairly new to the game for the state . Herradura is one of the few remaining good ones .everything else is basically Vodka at this point . Also if they are made in tequila they have by law a 100% blue agave label. If it doesn't have the label it's not blue agave and not from Jalisco Also white tequila is the cheapest to manufacture and hilarious they people think it's quality
Yo Lui can you make a video of different types of Tequila and their meaning I’m aware that there are 3 types Blanco, Añejo, and Reposado Now sometimes when I pick up a bottle, it’s clear right which would make sense if it said “Blanco” but instead it says “Añejo” so it’s like what

Have you tried casa nobles . It is Smokey and so good with an incredible finish.
I only drink white tequila. Do you have a list of the best white tequila?
What is your opinion about Volcan De Mi Tierra X.A Reposado? Is it worth the money?
I personally think it's delicious and really well made. I was just down at their distillery recently. Now I don't usually make recommendations based on price because I think everybody has their own separate budget. I do think it's a very tasty tequila but it is relatively expensive
Thank you for your informative input. I don't know anything when it comes to what a bad or good tequila is, so your video (and reply) made it easy. Keep up the good vids 👍
Hey, Lui, I live in Belgrade, Serbia and love sipping Tequila-Do you have any suggestions on how to buy the tequila you mentioned?
Maybe a local store can order it in.
A lot of the tequilas I see you suggest are just hard to find in my area I’d love to try some of them.
Have you reviewed casa noble? I just saw it in my liquor store and am intrigued
What do you think about casa noble?
Got into tequila a few years back and Fortaleza is still the best I’ve had. Can’t find it anywhere tho 😂
What do you think of Costco Kirkland Tequila?
can we say best job ever!. dude is getting hammered and getting paid at the same time..
Just saw a video in Mexico that said its the only real tequila because it uses nlue agave???
How do you feel about komos tequila?
Great video and great list of better alternatives at better prices. Cheers!
Thanks friend! Happy you enjoyed this one 😁
@Lui have you ever tried Don Roberto Repo? My fav!!!!
I doubt it most people are buying Clase Azul and 1949 to show off not because they care about quality
very good, I think this type of information is too good, but... you could vary a little in the tequilas, I always see the same ones
Have you tried 3 Amigos organic?
I need a link to a tequila glass for purchase for xmas!!!!
Proceeds to recommend bottles which are hard to find. How does this help me stop drinking Clase Azul which is practically on every shelf?
Can you do a review of heradura cristalino tequilla and other brands doing cristalino please
Have u tried tapatio tequila super smooth half the price of those fancy brands
Have you tired Pantalones tequila. Claims organic and made by 4th generation agave growers. Could you do a tasting? Thanks. Love your channel.
yes he has :) th-cam.com/video/1O5DgxiAO4o/w-d-xo.html
818 taste like clase azul?
This is all so true.. it tastes like agave honey and I got really into it when a bartender (of course) poured me some for my birthday. Then I did more exploring so at least I have to give it credit for being my introduction to high level tequilas. But I am glad I moved past it
Agreed. I’ve moved past it by buying and enjoying others, but I still have unopened bottles of Azul and I still enjoy them. 🤷🏼♂️😉
I agree with most of what you said but I can guarantee clase azul absolutely tastes nothing like 818
So I finally got my hands on a bottle of Fortaleza.
Where did u find
As someone from Mexico the most expensive tequila I’ve ever bought is Jose Cuervo, not because I can’t afford something more expensive but bcuz I can’t taste the different tequila “flavors”
If Jose Cuervo is the most expensive one you have bought then you haven’t had the chance to even try the more expensive flavors to even know if you like it.
I wish I knew this before. Today I ordered a Clase and a Ocho, blanco each.
I fell I love with tequila about 2 years ago. Me and a friend went to a restaurant where you get real authentic mexican food is served. For dessert we hab a Padre Azul Añejo and that opened my mind for this holy stuff
Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
THe only reason its so smooth is the amount of sugar and other added shit. At this point it might aswell be a Tequila Mixto.
Thanks for sharing this information Mi Amigo 👍😎✌️
Ok but lui what makes a raicilla or mezcal good?
What do you think about Don pipocho tequila ?
I would love to hear Lui's thoughts on San Matias Gran Riserva XA Anejo.
@@carltonepps4330PA state stores have Ocho & El Tesoro, there are other options that can be special ordered... but not many
Pennsylvania stores are run by the state and probably why the selection is so poor. That being said, the prices are usually pretty spot on vs. Delaware and Jersey, who can mark everything up. It's a shitty trade off, selection isn't great, but prices are not inflated.
I love El Tesoro and I got my local store to carry it :)
I really don’t drink but I do buy al kind of liquor
So when I see a nice bottle, i buy it 😁
Don’t matter if is tequila, whisky, cognac, rum or brandy
My question for you is
What expensive tequila is worth buying ?
Sorry one more😁
Can you do a video with Asombroso tequila and let your viewers know what you think
Thank you
Fortunately I found a Fortaleza Añejo last year and havent opened it until I find another one... by the looks of it Im never gonna be opening this bottle lol 😆
Have u tried Cimarron?the guy at the store said it's addictive free
Cimarron is my current well tequila and one of my absolute favorite budget options.
@Lui_Fern omg awesome I just picked it up in blanco
Which one do you prefer between Blanco and the gold reposado?
Also do you like ketel one for vodka?
BTW I read your responses to some of the rude hater comments and I laugh lol
I am soooo glad that you told the truth about Clase' Azul. So, super overrated!
Have you ever had the 123 brand? Can you do a review of the reposado, please? I'm very interested in your professional opinion. Thank you for all of your content.🙏🏿💯✌🏿
If it doesn't have the label it's not blue agave and not from Jalisco
Also white tequila is the cheapest to manufacture and hilarious they people think it's quality
Lol.. okay 👍
Para mi
7 leguas blanco, Herradura Antiguo y Pueblo viejo etiqueta azul. Los gringos ni los conocen
I happy to announce we have never tried Clase Azul. Thanks for the better recommendations.
I love clase azul. body , taste . clase azul is simply delicious and perfect 🎉
You have to try the Komos Reposado Rosa
Where are From? All the tequila's you talk about. I've never see here in South Carolina. Where do you buy this stuff? Question mark
I'm from MA. And yeah some states it's hard to find unfortunately
Clase Azul is Fireball marketed as top tier bourbon.
Hahahahahaha that's a pretty perfect way of putting it
I would never recommend G4 to a clase azul drinker, I think Suerte is much closer to the flavor profile while still being confirmed additive free.
Gracias muchacho 😊
No. I love clase Azul. But I do agree. I treat it as a desert tequila. Plenty of good ones out there.
DonFalano is by far my favorite tequila as of late, so much so i found two 6ft wooden DonFalano plaques and put them on my Havana bar
I hear what you saying, but I still like their bottle. Is beautiful. 😂
Love this.
Yo Lui can you make a video of different types of Tequila and their meaning
I’m aware that there are 3 types
Blanco, Añejo, and Reposado
Now sometimes when I pick up a bottle, it’s clear right which would make sense if it said “Blanco” but instead it says “Añejo” so it’s like what
I have made that video! Its on my channel
💯 Great choices! This guy knows de wae.
I will do a blind taste between fortaleza and clase azul and will be back
Saw some challenges on youtube.....arette beat out fortaleza both times in blind testing. That and ocho were always at the top and much cheaper. I found that interesting since fortaleza is king to most connoisseurs.
The 3oz + pours absolutely kill me. 😂
Legit thought this stuff was Casamigos. Insane that it costs this much and it’s harsh drinking neat.
