    Love the new camera. It seems more crisp and stable. The way you worked hard to place how this bike handles compared to other bikes was fantastic.

      When you were climbing on the 5.5, was it with the shock in the open position?

    Thought I might have missed some reviews, glad to see you on the channel. Great reviews as always, no-one does as good with reviews as you do. Looking forward to future reviews and you're right this is a great time to be a Mountain Biker with all the great choices available.

    At about the 2 minute mark, YumYum says "when it's not quite as steep, I like the way this Mach 5.5 climbs" ... and I'm thinking "I like the way I climb when it's not quite as steep"

      hahaha that's funny!

    Hey Jason, hello from Cape Town South Africa, so enjoy your chanell and love your reviews. I ride a locally made MTB called a Pyga, went for a short/mid travel 29er based on so many of your reviews and you are spot on. Keep up the great work!

      Rad, glad you found the ride bike for you dude! Love the mid travel 29ers!

    You should do component reviews! I trust your opinion and think others would find it valuable to see what you think about components such as the fox factory 36 or dhx2 coil and sram code brakes etc.

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      wow, thank you for the vote of confidence! I'd love to do more of a lot of things here on TH-cam, the problem is, this is just a hobby and not to complain but it takes away from family time and riding... I'd love to figure out a way to do more here though for sure!

    Nice review! Love my M5.5 (though I'm ready to make the jump to 29s and driving toward getting the SB130LR). The one thing I found that really helped make my 5.5 more capable was getting rid of that Rekon in the rear for a 2.5 exo Aggressor. Totally changed my confidence driving into corners and ripping through the roots and chunk. But you're right...the M5.5 struggles with stability in a lot of situations. But it's served me well doing big days here in the San Juans, the rooty flow of the Santa Cruz mountains, and the rocky tracks of SLO.

    Argh we're spoild for choice! Bronson vs 5.5 vs the Calling vs RM Thunderbolt BC! - if you can get one, I'd love to see you on the Rocky Mountain BC edition (compared to this for example). And I liked that you also commented a bit more on components and details, nice touche.

    • @ericsplayland
      @ericsplayland 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The difference for me between the Calling and the Mach 5.5 was the Calling is more planted & stable at speed and I think handles chunky terrain better. As far as climbing the Calling is spec'd with a crappy heavy wheel set. I built mine with carbon rims and it climbs great and destroys technical and jumps. Plus I prefer the delta link, its bottomless and just has a neutral feeling compared to dw link imo. For reference I've owned the Mach 4, Mach 429, Firebird, Mach 5 and The Following and the Calling is my current bike. I also thought the Calling felt more centered and transitioned better up technical terrain, it has a natural feel to it getting out of the saddle and up & over things, which also makes it a great jumping bike. I built my Calling for a little over 6 g's with Sram eagle gx, Pike rc3, hope brakes, stem, seat clamp, rotors and Nextie hoops with project 321 hubs and Thompson seat post (for now).

    • @danielgrafik
      @danielgrafik 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eric VanOstrand awesome. I’m very much considering the Calling. I’ve always wanted an Evil, and I think would suit my intermediate riding style too. Thanks for the response.

    • @ericsplayland
      @ericsplayland 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I live in CT so we have unique terrain, its granite rock gardens & ledges and punchy up & downs with lots of technical twisty single track. So I went with something on the beefier side and transitioned better over the front of the bike. Honestly they are both great bikes. One of my main complaints with reviews is they never use the same component specs so it just comes down to frame geo & suspension differences. From all the owner reviews on forums the main thing with the Calling is most went with custom build and better wheel set. I have a crash replacement for a cracked weld on my Firebird, so when I have the extra cash I am definitely getting another Pivot, might even be the 5.5, but most likely another Firebird lol. Love the Fire chicken!

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Daniel Korn, thank you! I hope to ride the BC Thunderbolt in the next few weeks! If it's anything like the regular Thunderbolt I'm sure I'll be sold on it!

  • @chawkins45ify
    @chawkins45ify 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I thought the 5.5 had a ton of pop and was one of the most playful but capable bikes ive ever tried, plus you can really pump and generate a ton of speed. I really like the new Mach6 so I'm really liking forward to the full review of that vs other 27.5 enduro bikes you've tried.

    Jason, I just demoed both the Trail 429 and the Mach 5.5. Interesting, I can back thinking that the T429 was just the perfect bike for where I ride. But, something about the 5.5 was just flat out more fun. Maybe I'm really a 27.5 guy! BTW, any plans to test the new Trek Remedy? Been reading very good things.

  • @untitleduser666
    @untitleduser666 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Love the bike reviews! It sucks seeing how much the quality suffers with youtube's compresssion. I notice it a lot more on smaller mtb channels, probably youtube giving more server space and bandwidth to larger channels.

    • @michaelglidewell1524
      @michaelglidewell1524 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      got to the settings button and manually set the quality to HD "whatever you want" and that will force it to play at a higher quality

    • @untitleduser666
      @untitleduser666 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Even at 4k, and believe me I tried. The resolution isn't the issue, it's compression

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, HD will help but ultimately, TH-cam compresses my footage into absolute garbage... so frustrating...

    You need to try it with the DPX2 and 30% sag and a 32 tooth sprocket such an amazing all around Bike that does everything really well.
    Thanks for the reviews Jason and keep up the good work!

    The Mach 5.5 is one of the comfiest bike's I've demoed. I wasn't keen on the climbing (if felt slow to me) and I did not care for the Shimano 1x drivetrain (give me eagle instead) but for descending it ripped and was very confidence inspriing.

    Nice review! Good to see some greenery. A 30x11 is not quite enough high gear, noticeable difference from 32x10. Shimano is coming out with XTR 12 speed finally. Hopefully it will trickle down to XT next year.

    I'm looking for a backup to my Ripmo - I love 29er wheels. However, a few years ago I rode a SB5 and loved it and didn't see a big difference between 27" and 29" wheels.
    Now, I recently saw a very good deal - too good to pass up - on this Mach 5.5 and am considering buying it. I guess I could always turn around and sell it if I don't like it, but have a feeling I will. Thoughts? Thanks!

    Jason great review and man those local trails are awesome! I liked the 5.5 as a demo but the Mach 6 is maybe a bit less playful but can do so much more. Not sure if it’s bc of the travel, dpx2 or other.
    Despite me crashing during a Mach 6 demo n breaking my hand/finger recently, ‘m curious if Pivot will be launching a Mach 6 29er n maybe phase the switchblade out. I’d love to see that or a Mach 6 that could run both wheel sizes. That’s what you need to add to the fleet!

    Nice review! Good job!
    I think the dw link and the 2.6 tires does all the work on the behavior of the bike because the geometry is not suitable for intense downhill trails with 66.5 head angle and short wheel base... The bike is slack for mounted with 73.5 seat angle. ..
    But sometimes the practice goes beyond the theory and surprises us... 😉

    Going to Pivot demo this weekend. I'll give it a try. Really have my eyes on the new Trail 429. If you get a chance to review that one I'd be curious to get your opinion. Great vids J, thank you.

      @chuckp342 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mtbyumyum how's the 429 compare to the 5.5? I bought a 5.5 and pick it up next week. The 429 would generally be more suited to my home trails, but the 5.5 didn't feel too squishy.
      Invisi-frame on the way and am trying to decide which bars / stem. Probably going to go 35-40 and around 780. Deity has their 787's and it's at the top of the list right now.

  • @brianwilliams2907
    @brianwilliams2907 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Interesting. It seems like only yesterday that you were wondering who would buy this bike. And saying that the Mach 6 not only descended better than the 5.5 but climbed better as well. Said that you would take the Mach 6 10 out of 10 times. What changed?

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, they're really very close in ability but in overall fell they're for sure different. They just do things different. For me, I almost always own 2 bikes at a time. The M6 feel bigger and more capable and I'd like to get out on a M6 again on my home trails. For the rides I did down in Moab the M6 stood out to me more! After demoing the M5.5 here on my local trails, it's for sure a really fun bike do everything bike!

      I rode past it twice on my ride today... straight over to Levitate for me haha... all the guys I ride with have ridden it and they all said the same thing, it'll be fun next spring after a winter has been on it and it smooths out a bit. Levitate is running super smooth right now though!

    Great review. I am considering this and the RM Altitude C70. I tried both at a demo event and liked both though I preferred the RM. Nice bike and review,,, my Focus Raven max SL hardtail came with DT M-1700 like the ones on your bike but narrower naturally , I upgraded to XRC 1200 but I don't ride like you guys --Do you think alloy is a better choice for rougher terrain than carbon?

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just depends on your riding style... I just light a light weight wheel and carbon feels a bit quicker or responsive and I like that! Reach out to Salt Cycles in Sandy, Utah... they make incredible hand built carbon wheels that are much less money than anything else out there! That's what I ride and love them!

    Hi Jay. I just demoed this mach 5.5 yesterday.. I now wanna sell my mojo 3. The Pivot is much more stable feeling yet still nimble and fun. Felt faster too. Dangit !! Btw, what were the quirks the first time you tested it ?

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, dang... yeah, I love the Mojo3 but it's a much smaller riding bike compared to this M5.5 but you look at the suspension and think it's going to ride like a 140mm bike... it just rides bigger. I think I just wasn't prepared for what this bike was the first time I rode it... thought it would feel like the Santa Cruz 5010 or the Mojo3 a bit but it wasn't at all like that for me...

    A little late to the video but how did you find it compared to the hd4 for tech climbs and poppy-ness? I currently own a medium 5.5 (im 5'7) but find it a little big. Have a good deal to get a small HD4 to be able to jump around better but hopefully be still able to enjoy the climbs with the higher travel and shorter reach

      It climbs better than the Bronson, feels more playful and more stiff... the Bronson is more plush and composed at speed. I'd be interested to ride those two bikes back to back actually! Either one would make an excellent bike for the terrain we have here in Utah... I'd probably go with the M5.5 but I think there's a new Bronson coming out soon so... that could change things!

    If you had to pick just one switch blade for 29 trail 5.5 which would it be

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess If I could only have one bike it would have to be the Switchblade. It can handle the really big gnarly trails better than the Trail429 and will be faster than the M5.5, although I think that M5.5 is basically just as capable as the SB... Hi , Great review. I ride a lot more flat then tight ups and downs . What would your thoughts be regarding setting this bike up with a more standard 30mm rim and running 2.3 or 2.5 tyres to improve the pedaling characteristics, thx Pat

      I have an M5.5 and tried it with a 2.3 Ardent Race rear and 2.4 WT DHF front. Personally, I did not like it at all. The skinnier tires require you to carefully pick your lines (I wiped out twice). With the 2.6 tires you can recklessly charge into rock gardens and tight corners and feel confident the bike will carry you through. The slowish climbing can be cured with lighter 2.6 tires. I'm running 2.6 Rocket Rons and LOVE it! If you're a Maxxis fan, Rekon front and rear would be a fun combo to try.

      Patrick, I would consider you bottom bracket height as well if doing this... you'd hate to suffer from pedal strikes by running and tire/wheel combo that isn't as tall as the current setup... Good luck!

    Hey man, this bike is kind of a jack of all trades to a degree. I know your Instinct fills that similar spot. How do those bikes compare, even regarding wheel size. I like that you are a guy that seems to enjoy both sizes and am interested in both as I'm somewhat ignorant in that regard. Cheers man, way to show it it this time

      @mtbyumyum  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, this bike is for sure a do everything jack of all trades sort of bike in the 27.5 wheel category. Personally, If I could only have one mountain bike at a time it would be a 29er in the 120mm- 140mm travel... they're just so good everywhere!

      MTB yumyum very cool. Makes sense. Are you still rocking the Instinct? What mods have you made? I'd love to hear what you are doing for tires now that you have some serious miles on it. That's as always Jason.

      I've got the Instinct down to 26 lbs 10 oz including pedals... super light weight! Next SL cranks, X01 Cassette and shifter, ENVE bar & stem, Light Bicycle carbon wheels, DT Swiss 240 hubs, DHR II 2.3 front tire, Griffin 2.35 rear tire. With over 300 miles on it, sadly it's time to put it up for sale :( Given my hobby of managing a bike review TH-cam channel 300 miles on one bike is actually a long time haha I'll likely be replacing it with the new Pivot Trail 429 29er... I've got over 100 miles on the demo bike and I'm in love with it. Would like to build it up light weight and hang onto it through the end of the year!

      MTB yumyum ha, I'm so jealous. Hard to go wrong. Any big difference you notice between those two bikes? As a single bike guy I like the 140mm travel but I also have heard so many good things about DWlink. I wonder what the big differences are between the two suspensions as well. Heck you could do a whole video on that BTW. Cheers man. RIP Instinct

    I was trying to decide between the Mojo 3, Yeti SB5, and this one, I went with the Pivot and don’t regret it. If it wouldn’t be for the forest fire we’re having up here near Durango, I would have been riding at Purgatory this week.
    Glad you decided to give the Mach 5.5 a second chance.

    @Skynet_11 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Those tires seem huge and a hinderence to the agility of the bike, no? These days all trail bikes are pushing these near plus tire size. If you are not racing enduro , do the bike need that much grip?

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After literally hundreds of miles on 2.6 tires I can say they've grown on me!

    • @jmanswat2457
      @jmanswat2457 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      More grip more confidence. more confidence more speed. I hear you don't have to be as picky about line choice with +s, saving time and energy on descents (which imo sounds like an advantage for racing). All I see are different advantages for each wheel/tire size and width, so just choose your style that will accomplish your goals.

    Interesting that you compare this to an Evil Calling. I wouldn't have picked that one for a comparison. To those considering both, I felt that these bikes are pretty different, with the Evil being more similar to something like a Santa Cruz 5010 and the Pivot seeming bigger with more travel and being more similar to the Ibis HD4 (where I agree with your comparison), the Bronson, new Stumpjumper, or the Rocky Altitude. Still, I found the Mach 5.5 surprisingly nimble and playful despite having some "big bike" characteristics and the ability to tackle some chunky terrain. It felt lighter than the Calling (maybe it was?) despite having more travel (+10mm rear/20mm front) and that when riding it, you could have convinced me that it had more than 140mm rear travel. Riding above its travel measurement could also probably be said of the Evil to be fair. In any event, I really appreciate the comparisons to other bikes in these reviews as for me that provides a lot of information and is something that you don't frequently see from the magazines.

    So overall if you had to pick a "quiver killer" between your HD4 and the 5.5 which would you take if you only had one bike to do everything? Great video BTW!

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I could only have one bike to do everything it would likely be a 29er... think Rocky Mountain Instinct, Ibis Ripley or the new Pivot Trail 429. But between the HD4 and the M5.5... tough choice, maybe the M5.5 although the HD4 is incredible!
