There are probably other songs from Interpol that are more bass-driven, but for me the quintessential Carlos D part is the outro from "PDA": a showcase of melody and how to compliment the guitar sound while leading the riff. Amazing and very underrated bass player. Thanks for the reaction!
They're still really tight live. Just saw them the other night. I've seen them 5 times in the last 20 years. I miss Carlos on bass but yeah, they still put on a very good show.
It's so jarring, I mean it's only like a 4-minute song with everything in there. There's no build, makes it seem like it's jumping between parts too quickly.
yes. the tension that gets built on that part of the song really makes it amazing. this is a bass driven song but it wouldn't be as great without that part; sad that it was cut for this because i would have liked to hear a comment on that
The album that this track comes from, Turn On the Bright Lights, would make for an excellent full review on the Patreon. It's a record that I've been coming back to now for 20 years, and their sound still feels interesting and distinct. The song 'Stella Was a Diver and She Was Always Down' has another immaculate bass performance that you can't help but groove to.
You wanna see a tour de force for Interpol and their bass player, check out "Not Even Jail." The bass absolutely drives the song. It is my favorite Interpol song BY FAR.
Not even jail is great, definitely one of the better interpol songs, but a little too simplistic for my taste.. my favorite bassline of his is Slow hands. A lot of cool little parts. Definitely the most fun to play.

Either way, I don't see how this relates at all to the song's music I do think it one of the best interpol song, probably top 3, but. That amazing rhythm section was what made me fall in love with them back in 2002 - so, so much greatness from Carlos D on that album, "The New" being my favourite, which at one point contains the most menacing melodic bass line I've ever heard, it's stunning.
This is so cool. Seeing you be like 40 seconds into the song and already spot on. Even predicting some of the progressions. Guy knows his stuff. I saw Interpol live last week and they were absolutely amazing.
I had the absolute privilege of meeting Carlos at my job a few months back. Can't remember who he was with, but he was working bass tech for whatever band. My bartender didn't know who he was but when I introduced me the stars in my eyes immediately lit up. Such a cool, down to earth dude we didn't talk more than 20 minutes but it was such an experience. PS : thanks for showing me The Horse and giving me a reason to learn 2 finger tapping, now I can't stop playing it
On this album, and probably of all time, my favorite interpol track is The New and I’d love to hear your thoughts. The idea of the rhythm section doing its own thing epitomizes this band. Such a cool and inventive sound.
I love this band so much. Carlos was such an awesome bass player. Too bad you went with the video, as the song is edited. Hope you do more. They've made 4 albums with Carlos. There are lots of gems there, Not Even Jail, Stella was a diver, The New, Evil...
the 4th lp was not with complete input of carlos. when you hear C about this period, his input was almost none. the trio wanted to create a happy goodbye
Ugh. I forgot this is the music video. This is a short version of the song. 😂 You gotta check out the album version. I don’t even know this band well, (not really my style) but I know this album. I overheard it at a friends house, and was instantly drawn to the bass line. This is only one track, of many on this album, of amazingly creative bass playing. I would definitely recommend checking out more Interpol. As you can probably guess, isn’t a one off. With the simple rhythm of the guitars on all the songs, the bass has so much room. “PDA” “Obstacle 2” “Say Hello to the Angles” “Stella was a diver and she was always down” are all cool tracks from this album.
So glad you covered Interpol! Carlos D's bass lines are iconic and severely underrated. Please do 'The New' by them next! The bass on that song is an absolute masterclass.
I know I always nag about Jeff Rosenstock (and for good reason), but Black Masks & Gasoline by Rise Against has a hell of a bass line and is one of my favorite songs from them too!

Interpol, is my favorite band of the last 25 years(and writing that, makes me feel much older). Interpol is a fantastic band, on their own planet, and great live, and with many great albums. They are currently touring their second album, "Antics", and it too has many great bass lines on it. Check out, "Evil", and a song that's driven completely by the bass, "Take You on a Cruise". Also, "Slow Hands" rides the bass notes on high almost the whole song, just clever great tones. Other great songs from other albums are "The Heinrich Maneuver", and "Say Hello to the Angels". Enjoy, as I have enjoyed Interpol for 25 years now
Awesome. great song. You pick some real good ones on this channel. I'm a drummer/guitarist, and I learn a lot from your breakdowns. Looking forward to Joy Division.
You will enjoy listening The New , that Interpol song has the most complex and beautiful bassline IMO. Sounds like Peter Hook playing melodies on up register, but at same time Carlos D had a particular sincopated groove that is enhanced with staccato. Is almost like funk, he uses a lot of octaves. Its really interesting cuz if you listen bass and drums alone, it really sounds more like a funk band rather than a rock/ post-punk revival band. Sam Fogarino is a beast on drums as well, he does an amazing job on bass drum and hihats.
The thing with interpol songs is they rarely finish the way they start. There’s a real journey in their songs. Definitely worth looking at more - there is some GREAT bass on the first four albums.
Love Interpol, I also got into them late and was not expecting what I heard. I found out one of the dudes was in the band Hot Cross and wanted more. Cool band.
I was pumped when I saw this. I thought you were finally watching Intronaut. Lester is a beast of a bassist. But then I clicked on it and realized I misread it.
