    My favorite bass channel covering one of my favorite bands. Merry Christmas to me! Keep up the great work. I discovered Streetlight back in the mid 2000s when I was browsing cds in some mall and came across the album Keasbey Nights, which at the time I knew as a Catch-22 album, but the cover informed me it was performed by some band called Streetlight Manifesto, which led me down the rabbit hole of figuring out why some other band recorded their own version of Keasbey Nights. You may already be familiar with the lore, but Tomas was seemingly incensed by the fact the his former band was still performing the songs he wrote, which actually made it into some of the lyrics of Streetlight Manifesto, specifically A Moment of Silence from this album.
    "Now everybody's laughing because they're thinking they're in on something I don't get
    Don't forget, I connect and I heard every word you said
    Like a child who believes he was wronged
    If you hate me so much then stop singing my songs"
    Anyways I brought that up because it would be cool to see you compare and contrast the Streetlight versions of the songs as compared to the Catch-22 versions. Personally I like some Streetlight versions more and some catch-22 more depending on the song.

      in his song request, I requested the song Hands that Thieve because he's now aware of Petes incredible bass skills, but thought him being thrown off with the tone only for him to realize Pete is actually rocking a double bass for the track. Also agree, I am glad he's getting the context with Everything Goes Numb so it gives context to literally how Hands that Thieve (album) literally is just changing the game musically. There are exactly zero bands pulling off what they do. For all intents and purposes its 4th wave ska.

    • @potter.felipematos
      @potter.felipematos 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      My favorite album of theirs too. It’s soooooo rich musically and lyrically. And at the sane time feels more catchy somehow, like easier to get into than the more dense material from the first record. Also Pete’s double bass work, as mentioned by a friend here, is just outstanding

    I want to preface this by saying I know nothing about music other than I like what I like. I've never studied theory and I play no instruments (I went through a pretty intense kazoo phase in 4th grade though). I say this so that if anyone rips me for not knowing what I'm talking about, it is known that I am already aware of that fact. Anyway, the reason I love Streetlight is what is being said at the end. They play a cinematic style of music. And that 16 bar thing being mentioned at the end is part of it. When I tell people to listen to them, I say that they do not really follow modern song structure much and that - to me and my very untrained ear and brain - structure their songs more in movements like classical music. They slide through motifs - am I using this word improperly, I'd bet yes - and create a musical story more than a song. It isn't about repetition and familiarity. They have verses and choruses and bridges, but not the way they are used by other artists. They structure the music like a story as much as the lyrics tell a story, and the music follows more of a plot structure than a song structure.

    • @hxcmetal
      @hxcmetal 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      A lot of that makes sense to me as a former vocalist/singer who could follow along with sheet music vocally or plunk out some basic notes on piano, but basically knows know theory and can't play an instrument. I am a huge movie fan, and I sang in punk/hardcore bands, but also did musical theater and enjoy musicals. As much as I love the music, the lyrics are just as big of a part to me. And the lyrics/story telling/vocal structure of Tomas Kalnoky's songs are what drive me to love them the most.

    • @LowEndUniversity
      @LowEndUniversity  4 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

      @stevedoredandyfunk3032 Great points! They have just enough of an accessible song structure to keep it familiar and moving along, but enough surprises that keep it fresh and unpredictable. And again, as I said, pepper in a ton of dynamic restraint here and there, which makes the big parts even bigger!

    What I like about ska-punk is that you can mix all kind of styles and influences and still be in the ska-punk wagon. So many exemples like Gogol Bordello, Kultur Shock, Haydamaky, Athena, Flogging Molly, Ska-P, Skalariak, Panteón Rococó and many oher bands. Great choice, great band, great work sir! ❤

    From 2008-2013 I've seen streetlight live about 5 or 6 times (honestly lost count) and in the earlier concerts their bassist played 3-5 songs in their set with an upright bass which I thought was very cool. I recommend you listen to their album "The Hands That Thieve" it's Streetlights most recent album and in my opinion their most polished album in terms of song structure. Songs like the three of us, ungrateful, the hands that thieve, if only for memories and toe to toe really do a fantastic job of showcasing their musical influences and I think you'd thoroughly enjoy them.

    Saw these guys in 07’ when I was 17 it was my first concert, at the now defunct electric factory in Philly, I said to my friends aloud “how bad could it be it’s a ska show?” I was worried about how intense the crowd was gonna be Lolol was one of the craziest shows I’ve ever been to. Less than Jake was the headliner. They were fine but streetlight fucking TORE THE GODDAMN ROOF OFF. That dude with just one guitar in that band making all that noise and standing out in that cacophony of sound was an unforgettable experience and a memorable first concert for teenage me.
