Es una maravilla cómo transcribe al saxo tenor su modo de tocar el clarinete (It is wonderful how he transcribes his way of playing the clarinet to the tenor sax).
What a treasure .Thanks so much for sharing. Artie Shaw played both also started off on the sax. Much talent in the big band era I don't think we will ever get to that level ever again
Very interesting. So Benny Goodman was an accomplished saxophone player too. It is funny he uses his typical signature clarinet licks and phrasing on tenor sax also. What a great atmosphere. I wish we still had these wild cheering audiances for jazz today. Thank you for posting.
He also played cornet. Not spectacularly but there are one or two recordings (in his early days...1920s and early '30s) and he was quite good there too.
"I think he sounds wonderful with a light tone reminiscent of Lester Young." According to John Hammond, the first time he heard Young he said, "That's exactly the sound I try to get on the tenor!"
Hymie also played the bass clarinet. He is featured in an extended solo on Lionel Hampton's 1938 recording of High Society. th-cam.com/video/6LfCuBPGdrY/w-d-xo.html (from 1:38)
@@BennyGoodman1977 But not all are good at it. I'm not a bad clarinetist, but a lousy sax player. Fingering is easy, but problems are sax tone and that I simply don't feel what to play on sax - I have no ideas improvising. Barney Bigard, Jimmy Hamilton, Tony Scott were very mediocre sax players - Ken Peplowski is one of the exceptions. Most sax players have technical problems playing clarinet as clarinet is technically more difficult than sax.
Great! Same vibrato as on clarinet and arpeggiated style on the cadenza. Really interesting. I can hear that it is him all the way, just on another instrument.
In Bud Freeman's book of reminiscences "You Don't Look Like A Musician," he says (p. 29) "I was amazed when I heard Benny play the tenor. He had the best sound I have ever heard, before or since. There was never anyone like him. I don't mean to imply that he's a creative player; but he certainly is a masterful player."
Louis Armstrong was indeed a great trumpet player, however in my opinion his greatness was more on the music. Actually he change the whole music by his way of playing, singing and precense. Without Loius no Frank Sinatra etc. Louis Armstrong invented modern modern music!!
Goodman practiced a lot! He was a taskmaster to his bandmates. His daughter was in my college English class.
Which daughter? Rachel or Benji ?
Rachel
Benny was for sure an increadible musician!!!!

Here's Benny playing baritone and alto saxophones: th-cam.com/video/xGp3EgWh25k/w-d-xo.html
Benny had to be able to play alto and the other reeds in his bandsman days, like all other reed players.
@@jjakiefte2165 He also played cornet on a couple of late '20s recordings.

Sounded so very good

Benny loved musicians that could double on instruments, he originally hired my uncle Hymie Schertzer as he too double on Sax and clarinet
I had a clarinet teacher who plays sax and clarinet - he's really good on both. I sure didn't like how he'd hit my fingers with a pencil though!
All clarinet player can play all saxophones as well...
More simple to blow it...

Most beautiful tone n dynamics
Nice Liam. Indeed a strong Lester Young vibe, but with way more vibrato.
neat

He sounds more like Peanuts Hucko’s Tenor playing than anyone.
He sounded like a clarinetist trying to play the tenor sax.
You have to start somewheres@@silva777
Shades of Eddie Miller.
He sounds more like Bud Freeman to my ears.
@@basilpeewit3350 yeah, Freeman tonally more than Miller.
