    Amazing! Very good work! I got to sit next to him on a flight from Denver to LA in I think 1990 on my way home from some lame ass rock gig in Aspen. We talked about chicks and all kinds of stuff. Very nice guy.
    I worked out of his book called "Skips" for awhile (or was it "Steps"). I think that's what it was called. It had a yellow cover. The first page was called "Eddieisms". It was a list of 10 or so rules to go by one of which was that if you're not working , don't drink alcohol waiting for the next gig to come in. He said to drink milk. Very cool guy.

    There isn’t a “blues” a section. He’s just searching a bit. Excellent job, so cool to hear this!

    • @contemporarylatinjazzguitar
      @contemporarylatinjazzguitar  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks for your comments and support🙏🏽
      Since this is a Rhythm Changes, it is a known practice to play the “Blues” over the A section. Upon closer inspection, you will also notice that the rhythm section harmonically supports Eddie’s conscious choice to play this way. With so much harmonic territory covered during this solo, the choice is the most logical one. And, the decision even supports the idea of “tension and release.” Eddie knew what he was doing because it’s his trademark element in his vocabulary. I believe that the “searching” you are referring to is extremely subjective but could be supported during his solo chorus playing. But, as improvisers, we are all “searching” for the right note….🙏🏽
      There is so much “Genius” in display in this solo that it becomes his “Rosetta Stone.”
      Please compare this solo to every single Eddie Harris Solo there is…..

    Thanks Neff for getting me into Eddie Harris !! ... he is what Miles would call 'a muthafucka' .. the ideas around 1:11 .. 1:25.., 1:39, .. it just goes on and on, the intense and well-executed ideas, . this guy must have been a SERIOUS student of ALL music, and his gear .. I mean, that leather jacket must have been what inspired Tony Williams lol ... wow !! but his sound, he is on a heavy reed, like Coltrane , and I start hearing 'trane more and more as we go on .. I would say he is a disciple of 'trane with exceptional inner power ... Thanks so much for your research and musical knowledge you have given ! ... ** WAIT ! on second listening the verses around 3:15 are being SUNG in the throat and PLAYED simultaneously, like Herbie at the Piano ... !!!!! This is INCREDIBLE !

    I had a friend who played alto (very well). In the 80s he was living in Watts. He recalls going to this club and sit in with this "tenor player." Afterwards, he tells him “you sound just like Eddie Harris.” Eddie laughed and replied “that’s who I am.” Later, Eddie invited my friend to play more gigs so he could focus more on piano. They only played a couple of times after that. They couldn’t make any money.
