  • Drawing on his fieldwork in the early 1990s, Dr. Scott Suter introduces the craftspeople who kept the white oak basket making tradition alive in the Shenandoah Valley into the twenty-first century. Funded by the Virginia Folklife Program and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Suter collected images, interviews, and baskets to document this important folk craft in the region.
Scott Suter received his doctorate in American Civilization from The George Washington University in 1994. In addition to serving as Rocktown History’s curator, he has worked as a folklorist and museum consultant, and is Professor of English and American Studies at Bridgewater College.

In a free country, moving people away from their beloved homes in Shenandoah, does not sound free at all. More like a devastating imposition of someone else's will on them.
Kinda reminds me of the trail of tears, such sad stories.
