The right way to spot a squat is not spotting the squat. Risks outweigh the minimal benefit. The spotter can get the full weight bail on him. Or the spotter blocks the squatter from dumping the weight which could endanger the squatter. Just use a squat rack.

I never use a spotter and also never use a smith machine.. Just make sure you remain in control of the exersize. For safety there are the catch bars on the squatting rack (at least in my gym).
