I believe that it is imperative that case managers receive more training to assist Ex-Felons returning back into the community and reunification with their family members. However, many returning back into the community come back unprepared. Many Ex-Felons have no job readiness skills, housing; many suffer from mental health issues etc., child support issues. This is a problem across the board because being unprepared makes it difficult for the client to move forward in becoming a productive citizen; when they are unable to provide for their family. In the State of PA; they have special units to assist ex-felons in preparing them to be successful within the community and at home. As a previous Lead Functional Family Therapist and Coordinating Case Manager in the PA, you have to be in the community on a daily basis making connections to assist Ex-Felons. If you are able to build a rapport with Executives of various organizations, they are more than willing to give an Ex-felon a second chance. I have referred many to different organizations willing to give them employment etc. In the State of TN; they do not have many agencies that are willing to give Ex-felons a second chance; I see a lot of Ex-felons on the streets and they state that they have not been given a chance to prove themselves.
