I've seen this version of "Rise" about a hundred times, and it never, ever fails to give me head to toe goosebumps. I watched your face, saw you getting choked up, and kept thinking, "I know. I KNOW, right?" It's so beautiful. I'll let others give you the background as to why they recorded this. For now, I'm just trying to recover too.

Context here - this was done after the Pulse Nightclub shooting in 2016 that targeted LGBTQ+ people. Each person in this collab is part of the LGBTQ+ community. The lyrics take on a whole other level of meaning with the context.
The second tragedy. So many reactors that completely ignore the reason for this collab. Not, Wido of course. He clearly wasn't aware. A lot of them leave it out to avoid controversy or backlash because it's an LGBTQ+ collab. Pulse was a blow to the LGBTQ+ community that struck at our hearts. Clubs in straight eyes are "dens of iniquity" I actually heard someone say that. They have always been our safe places. Places where we could gather together and be ourselves. I came out in the early 80's during the AIDS pandemic when we realized being in the closet was a death sentence. The hatred and discrimination was soul crushing. We were denied housing, hospitalization, ambulances, emergency care even losing our jobs because of who we were. Clubs were our havens. The place where we could recharge our batteries before facing the world again. It was like taking off a mask that was forced on us. Survival. Things have changed so much since back then. The sad thing is the Pulse massacre not only involved LGBTQ+ individuals but families and friends died there as well. I cried for weeks. Then the conspiracy folks started the narrative that Pulse never happened and it was a staged event to ban guns. Like Sandy Hook. We were even denied our grief. When SuperFruit offered this masterpiece to us it was a balm to the soul. So beautiful. I cried. A soul cleansing cry. I hope Superfruit, Mary, Brian and (my crush) Mario realize how much they helped in the healing process. God bless them.

So, this they recorded this as a response to the shooting at the pulse nightclub, and all of the singers are members of the LGBT community. Katy Perry wrote it for the Olympics, but in my opinion, nobody can touch this version. It is better than the original; it is probably one of the best arrangements, and the most meaningful and impactful arrangements, that they could have done with this song. When it 1st came out, I listened to it everyday on repeat. I'm so glad you reacted to this because I knew that you would love it. ❤️
This one chokes me up every time. They did this performance to pay respect to the victims of the Pulse Night Club shooting that killed so many members of theLGBTQ+ community. When music comes from deep emotion, it draws out that deep emotion in the listener. Thank you so much for your heartfelt reaction to this musical masterpiece!

Brian Justin Crum, his original agt audition was Queen, and then he did Creep. Watch both, include the judges comments. Howie, for the Creep performance really nails it. The amount of time between when he finished and the audiences reaction is telling. You might be knocked out of the chair.
There is a certain level of talent and beauty that we can't experience and still come out the same afterwards. It is inadequate to say this was a moving, painfully inspirational, emotionally-driven, performance - a fitting response to horrific tragedy that expressed the deepest pain of the brutal violation of our unity and humanity, while simultaneously building it back up. It breaks me wide open every damn time.
The other singers are also known members of the LGBTQ+ community, which is why they joined Scott & Mitch on this song. The inspiring lyrics is why they chose this song as a sort of "We will not be held down by violence" anthem. Their very emotional performance always chokes me up no matter how often I listen to it! 🤯😢

This song makes me cry every single time. Every. Single. Time. It's just so beautiful, and these five musicians are not only making the song even more beautiful, but they're putting their own experiences behind it. It's an amazing tribute, and a definite upgrade from the original. The harmonies in this are SO tight and so well blended, and the five of them blend so well into one person when they're singing the same melody line. I'm glad you discovered this, because it's something that truly touches the soul, no matter your background, gender, sexual orientation, race, religion.... it speaks to us all, in volumes. Obviously it is just a wonderful song to start with, then add in the vocals and emotion, then the reason they came together to create this masterpiece. I like the word, "flavors" to describe the amazing truth that each one of these singers sound different, even when they are singing on key and simultaneously. There are three singers you are probably unfamiliar with are Mary Lambert, who sings the last phrase, Brian Justin Crum, who went to the last round of the Voice a few years ago, and Mario Jose, a sweet man who joined Pentatonix as a ground crew member, but whose beautiful voice was featured in the following year as the singer heard as the first "warm-up" act for one of their US tours.

Okay, okay! You have my subscription! This was just the most beautiful reaction to this song that I have seen and don't worry about the tears. About half the people that react to this will cry. And I'd say half or more of the people that watch this along with you will also be crying. It's just such a powerful song by four powerful people all of them in the LGBTQ+ community.
