They sang in the same key as the Broadway actresses, except that last note by Mitch which was in a higher key! This is Wicked based on Wizard of Oz. Glinda (blond in the movie!) was the good witch of the North.
Oh my goodness, I had a huge grin for the whole thing. Chills.every.time. and I have seen it over 20 times. Favorite parts of your reaction: “Mitch must be one of the seven wonders of the world”, and your face at the end when Mitch does about his 5th “Mitch-slap” (more like his Mitch-sledgehammer). 😂😂😂💜Superb.
The present is Scott hearing Mitch sing this. The studio is where they recorded many things back then, including their Frozen medley, Lalaland and I think the early ptx evolution videos.
Elphaba (Mitch) is going to become the Wicked Witch of the West. "Glinda" (Scott) is the Good Witch of the North. This takes place in a sort of Witch Academy of Oz, before Dorothy arrives. Superfruit doing a song famous for being done by two Broadway sopranos! I don't see the Superfruit "Frozen" medley on your playlist. The blonde wig makes another appearance. (Also, I think Scott is sitting on a stool.)
The conversation before the song is a direct quote from the Wicked musical before this song is sung! Wicked is about the Wicked witch (Elphaba who Mitch is playing) and her relationship with Glinda the good witch. Wicked is Scott's favourite musical which is why this was Mitch's present to him. This song is considered one of the most difficult Broadway songs to sing and Mitch is singing it in a higher key than the original! The original was sung by Idina Menzel and Kristin Cheneweth which was great and I have seen several versions of this as I love Wicked but I probably do love Mitch's the best. The studio is one they recorded in frequently. The present was just Mitch singing Defying Gravity with Scott because Scott loves to hear Mitch sing and adores Wicked..
It’s in the same key as the original (which is probably why they have the backing track on tape. I’ve seen a later PTXperience with Scott and Kirstie doing the same song in their tour bus). The little run Mitch does in the end does go higher than the original.
@@sannalopperi-vihinen233 - that's true. I meant that he does the high 'opt up' at the end that a lot of Elphabas don't do (fair enough I guess as they are singing it might after night - they're protecting their voices!)
This is from the Broadway play "Wicked" (which I am going to see in NYC in November!....can't wait) Mitch sings higher than the original at the end....It blew me away! This is one of Scott's favorite songs and he asked Mitch to sing this as his Birthday present. ♥
Dave - I just love your reactions and I'm so glad you're dipping into Superfruit! Your face when Mitch belted out that crazy high note is priceless. Everyone else has provided context so I'll leave it there. Another amazing SF (plus Kirstie) goofing around but amazing video is Frozen. I've never watched the Frozen movie but this SF vid is hilarious and amazing...(I've heard libations were involved... 😉) Thanks Dave!
This is from the musical Wicked , the story of the wicked witch before wizard of oz. At the end Mitch goes higher than some broadway performers when they sing this.
I could not wait for you to see this. Silly costumes did not stop them from being in character and in outstanding voice, to where you are simply sucked into the scene, believing he is about to hop on that broom and fly! Go see this musical live. It is wonderful.
This video was my introduction to Scott and Mitch. Green paint and Tarzan wig aside I was hooked. I watched every Superfruit video there is, then I discovered Pentatonix, but this video will always be my number 1. No not Wizard of Oz but Broadway play Wicked. The wig makes a few more appearances, now you need to see their video for Frozen. Scott was sick and couldn't go see Wicked for his birthday. Mitch put this performance together as a birthday gift to Scott.
They’ve dabbled in Broadway songs. Kirstie had a run on Broadway in Kinky Boots-which really strengthened her voice, confidence and presence. PTX does a fantastic cover of Waving Through A Window from the musical Dear Evan Hansen. They also have an audio only (no video) version of The Greatest Show from movie musical The Greatest Showman which I love. Scott slays Hugh Jackman’s part. They also recently did Seasons of Love from Rent live for the Fourth of July-Kirstie will blow your eyebrows off. As per usual it’s all so good. I always prefer listening to the original first to see how PTX/SF interprets it and how they arrange it to recreate it with only 5 people.
When you've had a chance to recover from this bit of Mitch craziness, you should check out Aha!, Singapore, The Star Vista. It's a fancam video, but it's the only know capture of an otherworldly Mitch performance. And peeps always ask, yes Kevin is there. He was putting away his cello during the choral bit, and then he's on stage to Scott's left during the rest. You can even see Mitch moving over for a bit during the transition. Enjoy!
So happy you got to this one! A vocal coach that reacted to this video a few years back said that that last high note was written in two different ranges. If I remember what she said correctly, NONE of the female vocalists that have performed this live have ever tried that higher range. But, of course, Mitch HAD to! So glad he did! 😊
Okay, this is the best birthday present I could ask for on youtube! SO excited to see you react to the Superfruit version of Defying Gravity. It's one of my favorite musicals ever, and one of the best songs from it done by two of my favorite voices. I mean, come on - you can't lose watching/listening to this! Is it just me, or is this basically just one long Mitch-slap (in the best way possible)? Thanks for posting this, Dave!
Glenda is the good witch from Wizard of Oz, Elphaba is the wicked witch. Wicked is like a prequel, it explains the origins of the the witches. Great reaction 😀 Honestly I think the main benefit of hearing the original first is realizing they are singing in the same key as Broadway sopranos!
Wicked is basically The Wizard of Oz told from the perspective of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West. It's a series of novels by Gregory McGuire, the first of which (Wicked) became a much lighter toned broadway musical phenomenon. Elphaba (Mitch) and Glinda, the Good Witch (Scott) start off as school friends.
The costumes make you think this is silly video then Mitch sings. One of my favorite performances. He can do anything it seems. And Scott did a great job. Thanks Dave!

They met in musical theater as kids, but neither has done theater since high school. Kirstin did a run of Kinky Boots on Broadway. Most people who are familiar with the song are impressed that Mitch sang it in the original key. Endless Noise is just a studio PTX and Superfruit recorded at a lot early on, not sure if they still do. The two people who run it did some interviews for PTX fans occasionally... They're the ones who told us that the Evolution Of videos were one-takes and that they usually only took 4 or 5 tries with 3 of them being variations just to see what they liked best. (The information was in a longer video of people associated with PTX that was shown at a convention). The birthday present was just Mitch singing Defying Gravity 🤷🏻♀️ Apparently it was something Scott *really* wanted him to do.
It's my understanding that Scott got sick when Wicked was on, so Mitch decided to give him this gift of doing this song from it themselves. Scott loves Mitch's singing.
Check out “The Beginners Guide to Pentatonix “. Maybe we could all watch it together! It explains so much about them. Also, the musical is Scott’s favorite and the gift was Mitch singing. Oh, I’m not sure if many react to this but “Papaoutai” (Stromae. Cover)ft.Lindsey Stirling is a must see.🙂
I really hope you'll give Mitch's solo stuff a go. It's under the name Messer and it's SUPER different than PTX/Superfruit stuff. I recommend Love Supply and Leather. Also Kirstie's solo stuff is great too. For her I recommend Naked and Break a Little. 😁
Definitely check out the original, too- It explains a lot of the interesting vocal choices they made that you were noticing. Kristin Chenowith (Scott's role) sings in an even HIGHER range than Idina Menzel (Mitch's role), which is why a few of the harmonies seemed reversed from the usual Scott/Mitch dynamic. They both have extremely distinctive singing voices & deliveries, too. And the *staging* is incredible! Kristin Chenowith has also done a couple different performances of "Candide," which you absolutely NEED to react to. It's part of what made her perfect for the role of Glinda. It's a comedic song, waaaaaaay out of the reach of most operatic sopranos, and she performs it while *also* performing physical slapstick comedy. Without spoiling it, the premise is a "kept woman" debating with herself over whether trading her "virtue" for the jewels & gowns she's being showered with is worth it. Watch it once for the vocals, then when you recover, play it again with subtitles to catch the hysterically funny lyrics you'll be too ethered to catch the first time through. The lyrics paired with the slapstick are worth running it back! Please please react to it!

Of the current members of PTX, Mitch, Scott, Kirstin and Matt have done musical theater as kids. Kirstin was in Kinky Boots on Broadway in 2018, I think.
As kids they were all in local & school theater, & they all love musicals. Only Kirstie has actually done Broadway as a job though, during time between scheduled PTX tours/appearances. Mitch says the thought of doing Broadway makes him too nervous, way more than just his typical nervousness before a PTX show.
Wicked is sort of a prequel to The Wizard of Oz (it's the origin story of the Wicked Witch of the West). Scott is portraying Glinda the Good Witch (the one who told Dorothy to click her heels together). And given the way that "argument" led into the song, it was *totally* scripted.

You're thinking of The Wiz, in the 70s. Wicked was a series (trilogy?) of novels written in the mid-90s, expanding the stories of Oz, written for adults, instead of for children like the originals. This is from a play based on those novels. Glinda & Elphaba were college roommates & best friends before they became the Good Witch of the North and the Wicked Witch of the West.

VoicePlay does a wonderful medley of songs from the play that I think you'd really like. (Especially since I just checked and you have reacted to a total of 55 VoicePlay pieces so far. :D ) (vs. only 35 for Pentatonix! Uh...) I love Superfruit and, though I understand that they stopped producing new stuff for what were probably excellent reasons (lack of TIME, for one thing) I sure miss them.
Scott Mitchell Kirsty Did musical theater when they were younger. I think that's where they all met. The fine gravity gravity is from the Broadway musical wicked. Wicked takes place Prior to Dorothy Landing in Oz. And alphabet, the wicked witch of the west, roommates in college....... Think of a hogwarts type of school but no quidditch... It's where you go to learn to be sure we It's where you go to learn to be sure was it I forget the other thing. Idina Mendez played Elphaba Christine chenoweth played Glinda. (Especially since I just checked and you have reacted to a total of 55 VoicePlay pieces so far. :D ) (vs. only 35 for Pentatonix! Uh...)
I love Superfruit and, though I understand that they stopped producing new stuff for what were probably excellent reasons (lack of TIME, for one thing) I sure miss them.
These guys are amazing! No question. But definitely listen to Idina Menzel sing this. She's amazing. And mitch keeps it in the same key. Astounding
Glinda Wasn't always a good witch In fact she did some pretty mean things to alphabet.... I don't know How many people actually realize that Linda had no right to give those shoes to dorathy. Wants again she was being spiteful because they had a following out... I Highly suggest reading the book. It deals with some very adult themes including Having a master Race , Servitude slavery, and The main theme is what is the nature of good and evil. Is it nature is it nurture is it both... Or is it just somebody spreading rumors.... I read the book several times before See the touring company Doing the play. The Broadway show is so chopped Feel that it is from the book Wicked. Idina menzel played Maureen and the Broadway show RENT, Book score and lyrics done by johnathan Larsen. She played Maureen. At the end of the video where they do the really bad thing that something which Kirstie Mitch and Scott started Doing that in high school. It could have been sooner don't recall 100%. They also do Seasons of love from The Musical RENT. Actually it's the opening number from the movie that was made years later with 5 of the original 7 main cast members returning. They have also done waving through a window from dear Evan Hansen. They're super fruit hip hop goes to Broadway part 1 and 2. I remember recommend watching watching watching both of them and the same reaction. Most Superfruit videos have Bloopers at the end. They, And buy they I mean Superfruit and Kristie.
