  • I was lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time. We were on our way home when something odd was happening. This group was doing a Flash Mob - like Haka at Sylvia Park.

    The haka we performed was written by Ngapo Wehi over 10 years ago. His son Tapeta Wehi taught us it while we were in training for the Opening Ceremony of the Rugby World Cup. After our first week of training we had a free day to do what we wanted. This is what the 50 of us come up with ;)

    i agree i am a white kid from Massachusetts usa and i know two, soon to be three hakas. i did the research and i preform them with respect. as i preform a haka, i keep in my mind that i do not in any way own it. i love the ferocity and intensity of the hakas and the maori as a whole i respect all and thank all for what they have given the world.

      Tiltawurl272 KA MATE! KA MATE!
      It is death! It is death!
      We were at war
      KA ORA! KA ORA!
      It is life! It is life!
      But now there is peace.
      KA MATE! KA MATE!
      We're going to die! We're going to die!
      We thought we were all going to die
      KA ORA! KA ORA!
      We're going to live! We're going to live!
      but now we are safe
      TENEI TE TANGATA PU-HURU-HURU
      This is the man, so hairy
      because our leader, so strong and masculine,
      NANA NEI I TIKI MAI, WHAKAWHITI TE RA!
      who fetched, and made shine the sun!
      has unified us and brought back the sunny days of peace!
      UPANE! KA UPANE!
      Together! Keep together!
      We are all working in harmony, side by side,
      HUPANE! KAUPANE!
      Up the step! A second step!
      making steady progress
      WHITI TE RA! HI!
      Out comes the sun! Ahh!
      to prolong these sunny days of peace.

    CenaTV2 - Please notice that not one person present when this Haka was performed made any kind of protest against it. In fact, the response to it was one of approval and pride. Maori culture is an integral part of New Zealand society. Do some research and you will see that every unit of the New Zealand military has a unit Haka. Not because it is "Barbaric" but because it shows pride in New Zealand.
    I wish my country (USA) had respected Native American culture like New Zealand did the Maori.

    @mabms82 I would like to answer your question regarding haka's. All New Zealand men know at least one haka although there are haka written for women it isn't common. Haka can be written about many things sorrow, happiness, challenges. And new haka are written all the time, most are regional and a good kiwi boy will know 2-4.

    @TreeBearOne I'm sorry but I'm afraid you are wrong. I was not "making shit up". I was quoting from the book "Guns, Germs, and Steel" by Jared Diamond, professor of geography and physiology. If you have a problem with Professor Diamond's highly regarded research, I suggest you take it up with him. For me, his research concurs with the course work on Anthropology I did at university, so I stand by it. So, next time perhaps YOU should do some research before making a fool of yourself publicly.

  • @terribletai
    @terribletai 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @TreeBearOne Culture =/= Race. Do not mix the two up. Yes Peter has exactly the same amount of right to comment on what values the next generation of Maori are placing on their culture as you or I. Peter is a leader in a group charged with looking after specific things (the tenth trust) recently that trust have failed in a number of aspects. I was merely suggesting that before he challenges the rights of others to express themselves he should get his own house in order.

  • @terribletai
    @terribletai 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @TreeBearOne Culture changes from generation to generation. Elders from every racial group on the planet whether they be Icelandic, Celtic, Native American, East End Londoners are worried about how the next generation and the generation after them are interpreting and utilising their culture. To be honest Peter should be more worried about housing a certain waka than members of a different tribe 1000km expressing themselves.

  • @FOURasONE
    @FOURasONE 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Truly awesome. FYI, the Maori nation were the only group to EVER defeat the British empire in any war. They were, of course, finally defeated, but had "a number of astonishing victories over professional soldiers" to quote the well-known book "Guns, Germs and Warfare". Looking at this video, you can see why... As a Scot, and as an Australian, I love these people deeply. Head bowed - Much respect.

    Hahahaa , thats one of the funniest statements I have EVER read . The whole idea of sport / supporting a team goes right over your head. Success is only truly appreciated when you have felt the agony of defeat and dissapointment. Otherwise , you are known as nothing but a 'plastic fan'. I hope one day you can appreciate where im coming from , otherwise you'l have no idea what winning actually is.
    Go find a local team , stand in the crowd and cheer them on.

Haa, you don't know alot about it, not that you need to but don't go judging cultures like its fake, many traditions are used everyday, for welcomings, birthday and wedding celebrations, respect, schooling and the list goes on, because we arent a big race doesnt mean we dont know and use our culture and traditions and language :)

  • @ZydaineChristiansen
    @ZydaineChristiansen 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @gordon9745751 That maybe true historically (and is some sense at present). However, the Haka has become more of a cultural tradition rather than means to challenge. It is fine to do the Haka to represent yourself, your tipuna and your country, even when you are not challenging anything. It may be slightly intimidating, but it does not cause violence. The people on here who a spurting nonsense are doing so because they don't understand the culture and/or are racist.

    that people love to see it, get an adrenaline rush from it, and try to perform it, is NOT a way to disrespect a native culture! it's a way that we DO respect the dances, songs, language, warcance or whatsoever. it will more tell you that we are jealous about the fact we don't have something like Haka. so be proud, not angry that people try to perform it...

    Haha this is AWESOMENESS!! My school tried to make a world record for the most students doing the haka in one place :) Learnt the Haka off by heart now.
    I have supported the All Blacks for all my life, (2nd Team is Ireland) and this is awesomeness to see people doing flash-mob hakas around Aux. Maybe should try one in town eh? :)

    @TreeBearOne Culture is not a static entity. Cultures develop and change. Haka (plural) mean different things to different tribes, and different things to different generations. While you may view this cultural icon in a different setting than the people who performed it and the people who appreciate it, calling them or it stupid is unnecessary.

    @Dafeaz i just wanted to say that the guys doing this haka were professional, they are Maori which is awesome, but you can tell that each and everyone of those guys was feeling that IHI, WEHI AND MANA, the way they freestyle and have there own unique moves in the haka, showcases what a haka can look like and make a spectator feel like.

    @sean8604 "Fuck Up" means "Shut Up". And "Missus" is a slang word for "girlfriends" or "female partner" =P
    New Zealanders may speak English, but you should know that we speak New Zealand English. We are not horrible at English (atleast not all of us are). You should try correcting the multiple-grammar mistakes in your own comments before judging other.

    Usually i hate flash mobs. I always think they're shite and uneeded and just attention seeking. But this was different. This flash mob took me by the waist, bent me over and repeatedly smashed me from behind whilst whispering sweet lovings in my ear, untill i started bleeding from my arse. I like this flash mob.
