Peckforton Light Railway - How I manage a running session

  • After a couple of requests to explain how I actually go about running my trains during an operating session, I decided the best way to explain was via a video. My apologies about some of the shots. I was more concerned with running the trains than how well positioned the camera was. However, I think this video gives the gist of how it's done. Peckforton Light Railway is a hypothetical 3 foot narrow gauge railway which might have existed in the Cheshire (UK) countryside depicted in the 1930s. thanks for pulling back the curtain on your railway. Your line, and how you run it is so stunning I'm always asking myself "how does he do it?" I'm starting to realize that I've been running my line in a similar manner the whole time. Nice to see that you take time to enjoy it.

    It would be interesting to see this line made in something like Train Simulator. Yes the nearest gauges are either 2ft 3" or standard gauge, but it could still work.

    Great video as usual. Great how your track layout lends itself to the illusion that distances are much greater than they are. Don’t know if that was deliberate or accidental but seems to work really well.

    • @rikbennett9
      @rikbennett9  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A bit of both. Initially, I had no particular plan in mind, but when I decided to adapt it to fit the real location I worked out how it could be done by doubling back over the two sections shown in the track plan at the start of the video.

    How do you cope with bad weather ? Having stock in its “ right” place you don’t really want to have to bring everything in ,justto put it out again Also do you leave stock out overnight ( for the same reasons)? Great railway sir, a sense of purpose and therefore a feel of reality

    • @rikbennett9
      @rikbennett9  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I try to make sure i have running sessions when fine weather is forecast for at least two consecutive days. When I put stock away into the storage sidings, I make sure stock from each station is kept together so it can be easily redeployed the next time.

    This seems to me like the best way of running a model railway. With a timetable and goods scheduling like that, there's no chance of it ever getting boring I'm sure. And the fact that you don't seem to get confused at all from switching between trains so frequently is just extraordinary! ;-D
    Ruddy shame Deltang won't be manufacturing the Rx6X series receivers anymore though, probably their most successful product too. I'll have to stock up on them myself once they reappear in stock at Steve's Model Shop or Micron RC; I still have 2 more locos to equip as of yet...

    • @rikbennett9

      Thanks. I'm hoping that Andy at Micron manages to develop his Rx6x equivalents before David runs out of chips.

    Have you ever accidently forgotten about a running train, and sent off another, causing either a pair of trains running the same way in the same section, or a collision? I used to a lot, usually by mistake, but after a few years on the job I think I've got it.

    • @rikbennett9
      @rikbennett9  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't think I've ever forgotten a train. Sometimes, though, I forget to switch a point in the right direction and, while I'm busy with another train, I find a train has run into the buffers on a siding instead of heading down the mainline. This happened twice in this session - but I blame having to think about making the video as well as run the train ...... ;-)

    A really wonderful video, thank you! May I ask what the practicalities of maintenance for a garden with a railway like this is? It looks wonderfully manicured!

    • @rikbennett9
      @rikbennett9  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Appearances can be deceptive. I probably do the bare minimum of maintenance - you might see that some of my track is fairly uneven. The foliage is trimmed back only when I decide to have a running session. Apart from that, it's the usual garden maintenance of mowing grass and cutting hedges which I'd have to do anyway.

    What happens to the sand hoppers at beeston market? are the loads emptied and the hoppers then returned to the sand quarry? Also how many sand trains do you run during an operating session?

    • @rikbennett9
      @rikbennett9  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the question. You were clearly following the story closely. Unlike the full ore skips which can simply be swapped for empties via the hidden link to the Copper Mine, when the sand hoppers reverse into the exchange siding, I simply remove their loads. You might have noticed a blue plastic box on the ground by Beeston Market station at the start of the video. That contains all the unused wagon loads (eg coal, timber and sand, etc). I store them in there and then, when the empty hoppers return to the quarry, I put the loads back in. At the moment, I run just one sand quarry train Up and Down per session - but that could change in the future.

    • @harrywhitehead7814
      @harrywhitehead7814 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rikbennett9 ah that makes sense. I plan on expanding my current layout to more of an end to end layout like yours so that I can run timetabled trains, I have a magnesite mine that I could make removeable loads for and run magnesite trains in a similar manner to your sand quarry trains. Thanks for the inspiration.

    • @rikbennett9
      @rikbennett9  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They're still going but they are a bit of a faff to set up. I don't like leaving them out because they will easily get damaged. I'm presently trying to work out a much simpler way of operating them using electro-magnets which will hopefully make setting up a lot easier. There's never enough time for all these projects to get finished. 🤔
