you know. me and my dad have ideas for our own garden railway called "the Castle Hils Light Railway" or CHLR for short. the first loco we're gonna build is an 0-4-0 hunslet loco made from a GRS kit like yours. you are a great source of inspiration when it comes to garden railways. Thumbs up from America, Ge Rik!
Absolutely fantastic the way you have managed to build such a realistic British looking railway with practically no manufactured products that look British is nothing short of amazing. I wish i can model as good as you do one day. 😀👍
That's very kind of you. I am not as skilled as many modellers but somehow I muddle my way through. My stuff looks ok, as long as you don't get too close to it .... 😏
@@rikbennett9 NOT SKILLED! You're one of the most famous British g gauge layout in the uk everyone I've known to do with g gauge railways always aspire to be like the peckforton railway 👍👍
Just to comment on live steam and prototypical operations, that works best when you have multiple people to run trains. You kinda have to keep your eye on these things even with the simple, easy-to-operate stuff like the LGB-Aster Frank S or the Accucraft Ruby. As for sound for that 3D printed freelance diesel, I'd recommend looking at a sound system meant for small O-scale equipment.
This is wonderful Rik, keep the updates coming! Your railway has so much character and really conjures up the atmosphere of a working narrow gauge railway.
Thanks James. That's certainly my intention. I think the volume of traffic on it far exceeds anything which might have occurred on a real railway, but it makes life interesting.
Hi Michael. No, the GVT line will be quite separate. I'm exploring 0-16.5 and it will be mainly inside the workshop (so I can run something when the weather is bad). Once it's done, I might rescale the drawings to 16mm scale
Great video Rik, those CDR wagons are huge for a narrow gauge railway, I've seen them at CDR museum in Donegal town, have a great 2022, its got to be better than the last 2, hasn't it ???
Thanks Paul. We were due to have a holiday in Ireland in 2020, but Covid got in the way. If ever I get the chance again, I'll make sure I take a tape measure with me 😁
Have you tried TinkerCAD? I tried sketchup but struggled with getting the shapes to be printable. They looked ok on screen but when I tried printing them I was told they weren't "manifold". So far, I've not drawn a shape in TinkerCAD which can't be printed. It's not as sophisticated as the other packages ..... but then, neither am I 😏
@@rikbennett9 I have to admit, the "Team" like engine in the image is very unique and will probably be my favorite of the fleet when she is commissioned
Hi Michael. The only locos which I have made to my own design so far have been a couple of diesels. One was my idea of what a three foot gauge Fowler loco might have looked like and the other was based on the LGB Toytrain diesel loco. All the others have either been based on real locos or built from kits. My scratchbuilds are never exact replicas of real locos, they are loosely based on them. Not thought of creating my own design of contractors loco (yet!😏)
@@rikbennett9 May I ask, will you make a tender engine or Double Fairlie engine for the Peckforton Light Railway? That will give you a diverse list of engines
Hi Michael. No plans at the moment. If I did build an articulated loco, it would probably be a Garratt - I'm not sure if there were any 3' gauge double Fairlies (though I might be wrong as I think there was a standard gauge version). I do like the Londonderry and Lough Swilly tender locos, but they are a bit too large for the PLR. I've not found a short 3' tender loco - yet 🤔

I like the torque rod point mech. Neat idea and more useful in some areas than conventional cranks. Nice.
Thanks Martin - and thanks for "torque rod mechanism". It sounds a lot better than "twisty rod linkage" 😃

Brill. You've really got to grips with the 3d printing. Ive just got one myself, a Longer Mono resin printer, still getting to grips with cad

That 3D printing has turned out to be a grand thing for us modelers.
Its cheating! Brass and rivets for me

Hi. Yes, I have a few on Thingiverse (under GE_Rik) but most of them are on the gardenrails.org forum.

Not yet - just Mk1 and Mk2 of one loco build

The filament printer shown near the end is a cheap Anet A8 (£80GBP) clone. The resin printer is an AnyCubic Photon Mono.
