    Garden railways are simply a way to allow us train fans to create our own railway to our hearts content. When modelling smaller indoor railways everything has be perfect and replicated to make it look life like as possible without actually using the product (fake trees and plants, etc) because you are basing it off of or inspiration from somewhere in real life, but in garden railways you are basing it off of what works for you and your garden so essentially there is no rule book in garden railways because your railway suits your garden so it cannot be right or wrong. Plus sitting out on a nice summers day/afternoon/evening etc just watching the trains run round well...... nothing gets better than that. 👍

      I totally agree. I very nearly added this video to the end of this one, shot from my deckchair with a glass of wine in hand - th-cam.com/video/D-B1Ahxv1iE/w-d-xo.html

    I was engrossed from start to finish, your railway is the most interesting I've yet seen on youtube, and fascinating to listen to what you have to say, thanks.

      Thanks Tom. I found the process of reflecting on what attracts me to the hobby to be very satisfying. If it encourages just one person to engage with the hobby then I feel it has been worthwhile.

      I'm not sure it's skill. I think it's 50% luck, 25% pinched ideas from others and 25% doggedness.

    Thank you very much - seeing your comments is like listening to my own feelings on the subject, save that I work in HOm and OO12. I love your models - and forgot to say, in another comment, that your line reminds me very much of Peter Denny's Tamar Valley and Trepolen Valley light railways. Thankfully we haven't all yet succumbed to the 'debit card waving, shaking the box' approach - although that has its value for people who want railway models but lack the skills to make them from scratch.

      Thanks John. My first "proper" model railway was 00n3 (??0012??). I then dabbled with a couple of 009 (H0e) layouts before trying to build an over ambitious model of Halesworth station in 00/00n3. I'm really enjoying large scale in the garden which I've been working on for over 15 years now - and there's still plenty I want to do.

      The TVLR featured in the August 75 RM. the first issue of a railway magazine that I was aware of. That had a a massive influence on me, I’d put Denny at the top of the tree of modelling, full stop, and the High Downs Light Railway HDLR is my link to that Cornish line.

    Excellent video of a wonderful railway. i have had a garden railway of some sort since I bought my first house 45 years ago. I model in Gauge O finescale and have a four track main line as my main interests lie in constructing loco motives and rolling stock. I do wonder at times about having a station but its nice sometimes just to sit in the garden and watch your hand built creations going round with the pleasant thought " I built all that". One thing you have done is converted me to radio control which has transformed the amount of maintenance and track cleaning |I need to do. Best wishes Graham Powell

      I saw my neighbour recently who told me that he and his wife really enjoy sitting in their arbour at the end of the garden and love hearing the trains pass by. Unfortunately, on the other side, the sound of the trains sets their dogs barking. I try to edit out the barking from my videos but it's not always possible.

    I love the live water brook in your layout. I did try 'N' gauge model trains, it was a total failure. As a retired engineer from very heavy industry, I simply could not cope with the miniature items involved. The N gauge carriages are about the same size as my fat fingers, I couldn't even get carriages to sit on the rails. The couplings between carriages are invisible and I couldn't get them to connect. Joining track sections with also nearly invisible clips proved impossible; I had to solder the joins. The track join clips were particularly ridiculous; they were almost impossible to push onto the track ends but would instantly fly off and get lost as soon as you let go of them.

    • @rikbennett9
      @rikbennett9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Andy. I've never tried N gauge but, in my youth, I did have a couple of 009 layouts. They weren't particularly successful as locos used to stall on the dead frogs of the pointwork - much to my frustration. It's something which also used to irritate me with track power on the PLR which is what prompted me to adopt battery power and radio control - a move I have never regretted.

    Knowing its essentially a concrete trough, how did you get the moss/foliage to grow so abundantly on the streams bank?

    • @rikbennett9
      @rikbennett9 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My garden faces North and the part where the stream is located is in the shadow of the house, so nature helped in the process. I also planted a small clump of Mind Your Own Business (aka Baby's Tears) which as you can see has proliferated - again, being out of direct sunlight has helped.
