@@patrickdoyle2510 Haha, my favourite detail from the scene. Also, it's kind of adorable that he calls Lebowski per Dude, I think they would make good friends
Rewound to appreciate this (even the way he bows his head solemnly as he gestures toward the west wing) and noticed the way he has one foot forward and leans back on his other as the doors open is absolutely hilarious.
Ironically his daughter is more man that he ever was because at least the daughter doesn’t lie to herself nor puts down others to make herself feel better.
It's probably not a great thing to admit but when I first heard Mozart's Requiem at a concert, I loudly announced to my wife, "Hey, that's the Big Lebowski ransom note song!"
You could be entertained by this scene by just watching Phillip Seymour Hoffman alone in it and he pretty much goes unnoticed for most of it. Man the Coens are awesome.
Yeah, Brandt serves pretty much no purpose as far as the story is concerned, but a combination of funny dialogue and Hoffman’s amazing comedic performance make him really stand out. One could say he really ties the scene together.
He actually says cowards weaklings bums.... He just really hits the bums home and there's a lot of background music and internal monologue simultaneously
So many genius details in Hoffman’s performance here: The way he sadly bows his head as he says Mr Lebowski is in “seclusion in the west wing” The overly dramatic way he pulls the doors open with the intense choir music playing (an even funnier moment is at the end when Brandt and The Dude leave the room and it’s revealed that the choir music is actually being played _inside_ the room Mr Lebowski is brooding by the fireplace in) The fact he announces “Mr Lebowski” as they enter the room, as if his name hasn’t been said a thousand times/The Dude needs informing who is in the room The way he stands rigid like a robot after giving The Dude the ransom note as if he literally goes completely neutral until he gets told what to do (and therefore how to feel) by Mr Lebowski Brandt looking incredibly sad listening to what Mr Lebowski is saying, before snapping out of it and realising he needs to fill The Dude in on the details, showing the falseness of the way he behaves due to his completely over the top attitude to serving Mr Lebowski Such a funny performance and a standout piece in this great movie with so many other acting heavyweights.
What’s really amazing is that you could give a similar detailed analysis for virtually all the other characters in the movie, even when they’re only in one or two scenes. The Coen Brothers always knock it out if the park creating interesting, off the wall supporting characters, and The Big Lebowski may just be their magnum opus in that area.
goddamn this never gets old!! Are you surprised at my tears sir?.......Dude, "ahhh Fuckin' A" Friggin line cracks me up every time! The dude is trying to hold his hit in and talk at the same time. I genuinely wonder who they had to sell their souls to to attain the ability to portray such a broad range of characteristics and motivations in all their movies. Surely some black magic is at work.
This movie when I first saw it in the theater.....I wasn't sure what to make of it. I laughed, because it's a Cohen brothers movie. But over the years, each time I watch it I pick up on little details that just build continuously on the comedic genius built into this movie. It's sort of like watching the old Pink Panther movies.....only the Dude is the "Inspector Cluseau" character. There is so much going on in this movie, it was an instant comedy classic from the moment it hit the theaters.
"Written by men who were unable to achieve on a level field of play" "cowards!...weaklings!.....Bums!!" LOL. The Dude leaving as he's staring back at Mr. Lebowski as the epic music plays just adds a subtle dimension of humor to the whole scene. hahaha.
I'm so glad other people notice how hilarious that part of the scene is. Obviously this whole scene is legendary but that subtle stuff gets me for some reason.
It's such a classic line from someone who sees life in the simplest form. All the wealth around him matters nothing. He is such a simple way of life character that the materialism and wealth that surrounds him is so irrelevant to him that he dosnt even acknowledge the grandeur of his surroundings. Every one loves this man because he is the care free definition of what we all as humans deep down yearn for but the rat race capitalism of today will never allow.........LIKE, MAN.......😎
The Big Lebowski is one of those movies designed to be watched twice. After finding out about Mr Lebowski's secret, the major pretentiousness of this scene becomes hilarious on a new level.
I believe it’s vice versa, mainly because Brandt is always so respectful and refers to The Dude as The Dude. It’s why I love him so much. “Her life is in your hands, Dude”
I love the use of requiem in this scene. It sets the tone almost perfectly in multiple ways. First of all it's a famous music piece of grief, indicating lebowski is grieving. But the timing of the dude's arrival during Lacrimosa (the most famous and iconic part of mozarts requiem) is very suspicious and is sort off and indicator that lebowski is trying to play the dude and set the tone for their meeting. Then the third layer is the fact that requiem is the most famous classical composer's most famous piece. Lebowski is not actually as sophisticated and intellectual as he pretends. He doesn't actually know a wide range of works that might be more suited or more personal to him.
Fuckin A, I had my entire soccer team and Coach even saying, "That's a bummer, man," through my junior year of high school. Shit you not, it became such my go-to habitual phrase, I remember slipping one time by the sideline, and wiped out, picked up my muddy face, looked at my bench, and it was as if this was cued in film, of course, I said, "Bummer, man" in a fairly emotional tone, and we all erupted in laughter. Nevermind the loss of possession in the game!
I remember watching this scene for the first time and laughing unnecessarily hard at this. It was just so out of place yet had perfect comedic timing. One of my favorite comedies
I want so badly to have a study with a fireplace, a red tufted leather chair, and to just brood over the fire wearing a smoking jacket while listening to Lacrimosa and Vesti la Giubba. Like, I want everybody who meets me for the first time to just come into my study while I'm doing my menacing fireplace shtick. Other people who know me will just go "Yeah, he does that..."
My wife just heard the requim in a tiktok and asked what it was from, and I immediately guessed Mozart, but knew it was from this scene. So in order to answer her question, I used Big Lebowski to Shazam for her. "Strong men also cry... strong men also cry."
