This is pretty cool. I made a shaving horse once for a project, but it took up so much space in my shop that I took it apart and used the wood for other projects. Years later, I made another shaving horse, and decided to leave it outside in the yard as a semi-decoration. It's there when I want to use it, but will likely rot away in 5-10 years. Your mule is a good space-saving innovation.

have you tried carving the bowl and handle. does it really work? i tried the other one you showed with the rope and it does not really work very well...
Both this and the Swedish lap vise free both of your hands to manipulate the tools and work the bowl. Neither is designed to take a billet and work it through to a finished piece. However, I have used a shave horse to the vast majority of work beginning with a plain billet. as a nê wood worker i would appreciate measurements please, and if we can relate it to yourself i can scale it too myself. ie the clamps are the height of your legs etc
A lap mule of this sort measures to align with your own body. Anyone building one would just need look at the way this is set on my lap and measure him/herself in the seated position on the chair that would be used most often :)
