    There is no reason the key fob remote start should ever expire. If I keep my Toyota for 20 years, it needs to work for 20 years without having to pay for the second 10 years.

      @@ST-nc3gm that's fair if so. I paid for a year of the app since I prefer it over the key fob and because I forget to lock my car pretty often so it reminds me. Lol

    Thanks Jeff. Please let Toyota know that I will not buy any vehicle that requires a subscription for any feature of the vehicle. (Excluding extra non-vehicle things like satellite radio, wifi, etc, of course.) and no, I am not interested in “trial subscriptions” no matter how long the trial period is. I am willing to bet that I am not the only current, past, or potential Toyota client who feels this way.

    • @toronado455
      @toronado455 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's absurd how overly complicated Toyota has made these so-called "connected services" for owners. There are no fewer than six different "connected services" and each has a different trial period depending on the model, trim level, year, etc. (The 2022 Tundra consolidated the six services down to five LOL but with shorter trial periods). The idea that any functionality of a key fob would be considered a "connected service" is weird. Does the car "phone home" when you click a button on the key fob? Maybe only for remote start? If so, they did it wrong. (maybe that's why it takes so long to engage?)

    • @EndeAbgrunds
      @EndeAbgrunds 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      This is ludicrous. No sane person is going to be okay with spending upwards of 50 grand on a new vehicle and then having to "subscribe" to their own vehicles ignition system. Toyota better drop this idea or I'll take my business to Acura.

    I've got to say, for many Toyota owners this pay-to-play... after you already paid for a simple key fob auto-start...really seems like a betrayal of the value proposition of owning a Toyota product. This is a greedy move that Toyota has calculated will keep payments flowing in if it's vehicles are to remain fully functional on the used market. If successful, it won't stop with auto-start payments. By the way, thanks for the video Jeff, you did a great job as usual, even if the material you had to cover was made over complex by Toyota for something that should not look like IRS tax code.

    Jeff, you still got it wrong. The remote start from the fob has nothing to do with your video. All the details that you gave us are related to the remote start through the phone with the Toyota app that has the remote start function. My basic 2021 Camry LE hybrid is not eligible for a couple of functions over the Toyota app. Since my basic Camry does not allow me to remote start or locate my car over the Toyota app, I still can remote start it through the fob, which does not require a phone signal transmitting from my phone to the cell phone tower to the car cell phone service. To conclude, my remote start function through the fob will continue working with no time restriction and unfortunately you got it wrong again.

    There is a larger problem with this. dozens of vehicle models are about to lose network access when the 3G wireless network shuts down. Some of those vehicles are only a few years old. If the Key fob requires a working compatible wireless network, the remote start only works until the network technology changes. Likely in less than 10 years. Toyota is not doing anything for their existing customers whose vehicles are affected by the current change. Will they be any more responsive in the future?

    This has completely soured my experience with '21 Rav4 hybrid xle premium, i specifically asked the salesperson for remote start, since I had to aftermarket install it on my old 22 year old Avalon, never had to pay a subscription for it. TO find out a year after owning the car that I have to pay a pound of flesh to use my car is a real slap in the face.
    Now I'm actively trying to get rid of my Rav4 Hybrid, or rip out any and all telemetry Toyota put inside my car, and never touch Toyota anything ever again. 10 years? Why not 20? 30? 50? Why does a multi-billion dollar corporation have to keep their hands in my pocket when I pay for their car 100% cash outright including the bells and whistles. 10 years... Beyond dumb. And now they've lost a customer. And by reading from these comments it seems like a LOT of people hate this and are never going to deal with Toyota again.

It’s not like it’s connected to the internet to Toyota’s server it’s just a piece of object that talks to it and the car. I don’t care if it gives me 5 years, 6, years. I should be able to use it forever it’s not like it’s sos service where it needs an connection and reach out to Toyota or paying for lte. It’s just a key fob that works with your car if it was like maybe a data service where it’s connect information towards a cell tower so you can control it out of reach like maybe it makes more sense and justify but Toyota doing this is stupid. Imaging paying to use a ac even though it’s your car and you own it and it’s just your car and the parts and everything.

You really should take this video down as it misleads people, as shown in the comments.

      Just purchased a 2021 Camry XSE Hybrid, downloaded the app and connected my car to the 10yr Service Connect, then crank the car, saw it connect to the app, shut it down, got out, tried the Remote Start via FOB method he described and of course it didn't work @superheavydeathmetal is CORRECT - this FOB remote start function does NOT work without the "Connected Services" sub. My wife has a 2016 GMC Yukon XL and we can crank it from the GMC app OR her FOB with no extra sub payments required, as it should be. What a load of shit by Toyota. My wife has been thinking about going back to the new Sequoia, but after learning all this BS we won't be doing that.

    I got a23 tacoma here in Canada and was very disappointed with the fob. I can't even use it to start the truck. I gotta use that horrible app they got.
    Every other company gives you access to the remote start via fob and you pay for the app if you want the ability to start it anywhere. And the damn up you can't even edit how long it runs for and how many times you can start it. Plus the truck turns off as soon as you opened the door witch is extremely annoying.
    Is this just a damn Canada thing?

    Is the the same for Lexus? Our 2012 Lexus rx350 still has a working remote start. Press the lock button 3 times and ta da... if a new Lexus can't do 12+ years of remote start for free that is absurd! Toyota should be the same.

    Jeff - any idea why Toyota would back down to a 3-yr Service Connect subscription vs 10yrs in the case of the Prius and Tundra? Those seem to be solid just as the rest...odd-ly specific to single them out.

    • @toronado455
      @toronado455 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      in the case of the 2022 Tundra it appears it's due to the new Toyota head unit, not sure why on 2022 Prius, but Prius is kind of an oddball and it has a different type of head unit, so that might have something to do with it.

    Remote start and key fob services shouldn't be subscription period. We are shelling out 10s of thousands of dollars for these vehicles we should be able to own the features outright. Shame on Toyota for doing this. I convinced my husband to consider Toyota but now because of this news he is going with ford. No subscription services with them....

    My 2023 Toyota Camry XSE fully loaded purchased in December 2022, remote did not start here in December 2023. Had to renew my Toyota App Remote Connect subscription for $80 year to get my Camry to start remotely with Key FOB. Consider that 1st year is Trial ... 9 more years with App cost increase so $90 times 9 years is $810 providing you have your vehicle that long.
    Toyota ripoff or scam.

    I like Toyota vehicles and own them, however this is very cheap and controlling of them! For example.. you could buy a base 2018 Honda Accord LX which did not have automatic/remote start, buy an upgraded remote to a higher trim/ EX ..that it was included on ...get it programmed and have remote start in definitely.

    Yeah this is still horrible. Ok 10 years seems like it should be long enough but it’s the business mindset I can’t get behind.
    1. You know they didn’t explain this to customers. This was hidden somewhere in the contract. The fact that we are just starting to hear about this as customers are complaining proves that.
    2. You can see the money grabbing business model when he’s explaining how long your subscription model is based on when you bought your car. Is it a surprise that the models currently being sold have 10 years plans. They’re basically waving their hands in front of current buyers. ‘Oh don’t worry about that’ meanwhile they screw anyone not currently buying. Remember that. Once you buy the car they don’t care about you anymore.
    To be clear I’m not blaming Jeff. He’s just selling the cars and explaining. This is Toyota as a company I’m mad at. And I’ll be taking my business elsewhere.

      You can install aftermarket remote starter. I only paid $369 Canadian for a 2 way remote starter and it does exactly what the key fob does. It runs for 15 mins before turning off.
