Even though Gertrude is a monster in-law herself, I thought it was sweet how quickly she accepted Charlie. Especially after everything Viola put her through.
Well, maybe she had a better judgement than Viola After all, Viola is a woman who would poison her future daughter-in-law and wouldn’t bother inviting her son’s grandmother to his wedding, it’s no wonder Gertrude disliked her
"What ever made you think he wasn't?!" - A question some people (and mothers in law) should ask themselves, before trying to ruin relationships of others.
Viola : « I cannot believe she compared me to Gertrude ! » Ruby : « I know ! Now, that’s just wrong » Viola : « Thank you ! » Ruby : « You are far worse » Viola : 🤯 🤣🤣🤣 She asked for this one !
The irony behind Gertrude being a monster in-law is that she had every right to dislike Viola from the very beginning. Viola only married her husband for his wealth, not necessarily because they had good chemistry compared to Charlie and Kevin. Gertrude immediately accepted Charlie because she could tell right away that Kevin deserved someone who truly admires his character, not his position.
In addition to being hilarious in a very *subtle* way, which I reckon is one of the best kinds of hilarity, this movie is also quite deep. Because you can see it is the way the mother in law was treated by her own mother in law that makes her treat her new daughter in law so badly. She is *offsetting* the built up pain of her own mother in law finding defects within herself by finding defects in her daughter in law. I guess this is just another reason to find a way to deplete pain *within* yourself so you can develop Selfless Love for those you should Selflessly Love more than anyone, and thereby *strengthen* these unions rather than *condemning yourself* by (trying to) destroy them.
I have seen this movie many times. I don't know if I would have stayed. Having endured all that...suffering to this point, I think I would have told my fiance that I can't marry him after all I had to endure. That I love him but his mother made me suffer enough and just left heartbroken over knowing I was never good enough for my fiancé's mother.
@@Miguel-gt6ug Exactly. 💯 And if you do leave, then the MIL wins because her goal was to get rid of the DIL. At the end of the day, the parents need to give their support and respect. Not their approval. God bless.
Such a bizarre movie to me. The underlying theme of how the son, Kevin is glorified by everyone like Jesus. Yet, so much is kept in secret from him. He doesn’t know his mother is a complete psycho, and his wife is on the verge because of her.
You will be surprised. This is actually really common in Latino families which the matriarchs tend to be like that and the male sons (especially the first ones), in a sense of guilt and shame, act nulified. And knowning with that, this is also relatable in Eastern Asian families with powerful matriarchs.
I think the movie was critically panned because they just wanted to tear down JLo for all the success she was having. I just think the critics didn’t want to see a successful young Hispanic lady doing it all: acting, dancing, singing, setting trends, influencing a generation, being an intelligent business woman, shining bright, and thriving in a male dominated world.
I would love to see a movie like in the 1980s or even 1970s with Gertrude and viola to see a young viola and a young gertrude having it out especially seeing viola being a TV weather woman back in the days and gertrude being a English business woman and to see her wearing black to viola's wedding with her son also hearing her say that she's in morning that would be pretty awesome and epic maybe that movie would explain to us why viola is the way she is in this movie and could explain viola's crazy cuckoo creepy behavior who knows gertrude was maybe was than viola just seeing her make her appearance at the end of the movie something tells me that viola was just crazy and that she was angry that her son is going to get married but gertrude seems that she was evil back in the days and had actually hated viola so that would be a really great movie they should really consider making it it can be named witch in law 🤣🤔🤯🧙♀️🧹💔
Hi Elizabeth I hope my comment didn't sound as a form of privacy invasion your comment tells of a wonderful woman with a beautiful heart which led me to comment I don't normally write in the comment section but I think you deserve this complement. If you don’t mind can we be friends? Thanks God bless you….🌹🌹

One big mistake, never let the mother in law ring a married man everyday, real how pathetic so week, his not single not your son anymore He’s Married, let them get on with their lives, week mothers let go.

Well, maybe she had a better judgement than Viola

I always thought she did that to spite her daughter in law
@@JalisaHapp2000It’s the enemy of my enemy is my friend mentality.
@@victoiresouledelafont3428 Or maybe the mistreatment of Viola led to her mistreatment of Charlie. You know, hurt people hurt people and all.
Gertrude definitely destroyed Viola with that "My God, you look old!" 😂
Ruby: *searching for crows feet* fine
"...and you drank red wine.. FROM A BOX!"
"CLASSY!" 🥂🥃
That part gets me every time 😂😂😂😂
I thought a lot of Americans do that
😅😅😅🤣🤣 love it
Always keeps me coming back. 😂😂
"Heard you got sacked, thrown into a looney bin
My congratulations"
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂😂
Best like ever 😆
Oh my god OH MY GAWD these Hors d oeuvres taste like old socks 😂😂😂
You drank red wine out of a box!
Wanda: classy
🤣🤣🤣
Wanda Sykes is the best!!
Gertrude is what I aspire to be. I LOVE her sarcasm.
"What ever made you think he wasn't?!" - A question some people (and mothers in law) should ask themselves, before trying to ruin relationships of others.
Right
I hope my mom's not a monster-in-law!
A question my future father-in-law AND mother-in-law should be asking themselves.
Oh, the answer's easy, actually: They believe they are not happy because it's not _by their own biased standards._
Viola : « I cannot believe she compared me to Gertrude ! »
Ruby : « I know ! Now, that’s just wrong »
Viola : « Thank you ! »
Ruby : « You are far worse »
Viola : 🤯
🤣🤣🤣 She asked for this one !
You never know where Ruby is taking the conversation...you never see it coming LOL
I was like, "good!"
Viola deserved that
Lol!
The nuts alone. She's lucky Charlie only had her lips swell. If her throat had closed up, she could have been charged with attempted murder.
I lost it at "Terminal Disappointment" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
LMAOO
And ONLY an evil mother-in-law would come up with such a line.
What this particular scene means is that a spiteful mother in law was once a daughter in law herself who was treated the same way.
Gertrude seemed to have better judgement than Viola😂
Yes and Charlie said it was never going to end because that was going to be her and Viola in 30 years.
@@marwatson7408 can't say I blame her
"...you're kidding..." She knows damned well gay men love a savage old broad...
Yeah we do
Oh hell yeah we do, omg for real. Looking back I may have realized I was gay from how much I adored her 😂
Remy: I love you.
Gertrude: You're kidding. Love it
RIP Elaine Stritch.
She was amazing

You dont need your fiance’s mother… you married your fiance for your fiancé, and to make a family together…. You dont need their approval

I wish he knew the truth that his mother is still planning a couple like they do in arrange marriage
