- Ever see an 800hp off-road race truck on the drag strip and road-race course? Neither had we, which is why we set that up on this episode of HOT ROD Unlimited. Join Mike Finnegan as he takes a look at the fabrication and the power behind Cameron Steele's Desert Assassin Trophy Truck that runs in the SCORE off-road race series, sponsored by Monster Energy and Yokohama tires. You may also know Steele from hosting action-sports shows on TV, but in this video he's at the wheel of his desert truck on the quarter mile of Auto Club Famoso Raceway and the big track at Willow Springs International Raceway, right alongside us in a new Mustang Boss 302 and a Raptor 4x4. Watch the surprising results!

Lets see the mustang in the desert now
music videos
I bet it'd do alright with some paddies on the back😂
That trophy truck is a serious monster machine... The power & torque not to mention what its build for makes it dangerous anywhere... Bottom line its a sick as machine that i wish i can at least sit behind the wheel and wet my self involuntarily xp lol
cameo with boss 302 and Raptor, my two favorite ford vehicles, and an epic trophy truck. Best hot rod unlimited episode yet? I think yes! Moar like this please!
HAHA, I love how they didn't even show the Raptor's time. They just put the word," SLOW," across the screen.
They were clearly shitting on Ford. and you bought it. cattle.
Im here looking at the Willow Springs track and it makes me think of how damn accurate the devs of Gran Turismo have really been
this is awesome would love to see more offroad vs street
+noobtoob nooby same here
That beast sounded like an offshore race boat on dry land. Awesome.
"That mustang is designed for corners" BAHAHAHAHAHAHA... funny.
slaQ83 I think they ment : "this mustag is desinged to hit crowds"
slaQ83 it actually is hahhahahahahaa funny. Beats a e92 m3 on a track.
As the GT350 was built for the corners, so was the boss
The mustang is a car, it is not alive. You cannot base a car series off of a driver. I love how some people are this ignorant.
Bajajaja
Now can we see the Boss 302 out in the Baja! LOL
haha i hate mustangs so please lets see it!
I love mustangs but I still want to see it
Thats a feeling you gotta get used too.. going into the corners with the trophy truck, knowing its not gonna flip over but it is gonna feel like it because of the 30 inches of wheel/ suspension travel lol. Cool video..
I love that they left the spare tires on the truck!
Thank you from a car guy who gets to cross off a bucket list question.
Now lets see the Boss 302 go through the Baja !!
pretty good in the turns for having soft sway bars and 40" BFG's lol
a trophy truck ripping through the desert is the best.....the amount of prep to go from race to race is unreal......someone should do a show on that
The difference between this awesome show and ALL OTHER car shows is that on this one you actually get to hear the engine sound.
Now let's see a mustang go in the desert.
"The mustang is meant for cornering" lol ok
it is dude... that's a boss 302. it's faster than the e46 m3 .. stupid
+Harry Harkins and how the fuck does that help it corner?
+hyper drive I'm saying it's faster around pretty much every every track with corners !! so what are you saying ....
+Harry Harkins no mustang is designed for corners.... HELLO
+Chad W so a BMW me 2010 isn't made for corners Hahaha?? answer
Awesome video!
that bodyroll is so awesome to watch
The bottom line is that both driver and truck were taken out of their natural habitat and placed in a situation completely different from what their used to. That truck was built for the sole purpose of being the fast off-road. Given the situation and the fact that they left the baja tires on the truck, I'd say they still did a hell of a job. But let's see a Boss 302 shred through the desert as is.
They're*
Mark Lamberton Oops. Fucked that one up. My bad.
Hehehe.
What the fuck are you talking about
***** Those tires actually have good grip and sidewall stiffness. Suspension wise though I'm shocked that it wasn't totally worthless at speeds approaching the boss302. I wonder what a simple shock rebuild for much more stiffness and less travel would have done for them, combined with atleast lowering by using the already present spring collars on those shocks.
God the suspension is insane on these fuckin trucks
+Braden Cole The jumps man the jumps. I love these things!
Very cool episode!
This was a seriously cool video... thanks MT.
now put the mustang in the trophy trucks back yard
id absolutely drive that truck in town, go to work n stuff like that
probobly not the best grocery shopper thoguh,XD but hey, i'd give it a shot,XD hahaha,ooooohhhh...........but uh, i think if i need to haul something,i'll be using a different truck. it's a real shame these bad boys aren't street legal, oh well, only adds to their badass factor anymore, aaahh, why are the "bad boys" always getting all the attention. hahaha.
Marce Z I’m planning on building a prerunner, close enough lol. And a lot cheaper.
Even the hot rod guys did a warm-up burnout on street tires, wow
frickin A. nice job guys. well said at end about pinnacle of fabrication.
keep em coming!
I'm curious as to why it has an SBC instead of an LSX. Can anyone tell me? Please no stupid answers.
Plain and simple reliability
kh kj An LSX is plain and simple reliability, especially if you ditch efi
+Ian Thompson might be because of sponsors or their mechanics prefer a sbc for whatever reason. Parts maybe? idk..
It's an sb2 so it's probably an old Nascar top end they dropped on a bigger short block
Not too fair comparing a heavily modified trophy truck against a stock raptor, I want to see it up against a Hennessey velosiraptor lol.
In baja...
Very cool to watch Cam Steele wheel that beast around a road course!
Great video!!!
be amazing to rip this thing around town! then any problems with cops hang on we goin off rd!!
I though 396 cubic inches and up was considered a big block? I'm no motor head btw
The difference between a big block and a small block is not displacement, it is he size of the engine block hence the name. A big block has very large water passages, and quite a large space between cylinders, where as a small block has the cylinders very close, and smaller water passages. Also the small block has its valves side by side, where as the big block has the valves angled to prove better flow. There were 400+ Cubic inch small blocks from the factory, and 396 big blocks so it wasn't all about displacement.
ih
There are different variations, like an Ls7 in a corvette is a small block 427
Chevrolet actually put out an OEM truck engine it was a 400ci long small block for 4x4 pickups
awesome video!
It's so bad ass to see something like a trophy truck taken totally out of its element like this.
Great video and Cameron Steel is a nice guy to come along and do this for you guys.
Been a subscriber to HOT ROD MAGAZINE for almost 13 years. I love these shows keep up the good work guys
great video!
The whole time he was on the track in the truck, I was dying for him cut corners!!
I have sooo much respect for you just because of the fact that you entertained a serious conversation with a guy who knows as much about grammar as he does trucks... I swear, I read those comments and it sounded like a 6 year old who played Forza and wanted to try to make a point.
Love This Channel !!
awesome video
Beautiful truck!!!
Good stuff at the end.
yup this is more my style!! sick vid guys!!!!
probably one of the coolest videos
OMG, SOOOOOO AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!! More Trophy Truck Please!
that was a great video!!!
Absolutely awesome! :-)
That was sweet, it's cool to see off road vehicles out of their usual element and style perform well
Love This Truck !
No matter what I still enjoyed the video... Something different every now and then doesn't hurt at all. Amazing trophy truck!!!
very interesting, and very cool.
Thats is really great that they took this AWESOME TT out on the pavement for a little head to head! YEAAAAAHHHH BABY the TT kicks some tail-lights!
Desert racers OWN it.
Nicely put man. the truth
That thing sounds amazing!
Absolutely love that suspension!
That was awesome
One BadAss ride !
that was so cool to see a baja truck on the pavement. love this video!
I never even thought of that, very true.
Sick! the supermoto of the car/truck world! Awesome video!
They should do a supermoto like racing series where the track is 50% dirt and 50% street course using trophy trucks with slicks.
The bodyroll here is just crazy. But take that truck, lower and stiff up the suspension, give it some more racing tieres. And viola!! You got a brilliant race track baja truck
Glory to Motor Trend!!
Awesome video! I had to laugh though when you said "the mustang is designed for corners."
Hell yea pre runners are sick!! One day ill be in one in the desert!
More hotrod unlimited please there show Is so dope
Love those trucks
Trophy Trucks are one of my favorite sports to watch. That and Rally Cross.
You pretty-much nailed it. The tall deck has a taller deck height allowing for a longer stroke. the LSX and LSX-A blocks are offered by GMPP, however are not used in production engines. They can use almost every part ever offered on the Gen 4 small blocks (LS-LQ series)
As for bore the LSX series blocks are limited to 4.25 inches (for a All motor effort) acording to GMPP.
loving the small block chevy
I like the length of this video.
Mustang 1 wheel burnouts FTW!
Way to go Cam! See you again at the La Paz Marina and enjoy a cold Pacifico after pre-run.
Time for the Mustang to hit the desert!
Gotta love the way them chevy's sound!!
awesome!!
That was cool.
the sound of that trophy truck!
Cross offroad!Great mashines!
Ignition, interior and exterior lighting, water pump for drink system, fuel pumps, radio, cooling fans, seat heaters, etc. Many of the systems have back-ups so there are dual switches for those. Hope that helps.
its cool to see them at famoso raceway in my home town :)
i would watch that racing series
That body roll must be terrifying.
Now lets see a Boss 302 on the trophy truck course.
Yep. They're on a whole different level.
Crazy machine! Bet you that this monster just laid out a huge strip of rubber all around the track!
BIG THANKS for this comparison, very interesting to see a trophy truck out of natural habitat. Say and show more technical details, gearbox, valve body, fuel delivery, steering rack, rear links geometry.
This is the car in which the driver has the most impact, as driving styles can make big differences in car comportament.
that 442 makes amazing sound !
Baja truck on a road course, now a Stadium unlimited truck. it's like Indy with jumps, run as hell to watch
Very interesting...
hey thank you that really helped
So power full!! :-*
That truck is awesome
If you are talking about the trophy truck, none are for adjusting shocks. They control fans for radiators, which fuel pumps, lights, sirens, parker pumpers, accessories being powered..etc
an 800 hp custom built race truck beat a factory stock raptor? wow. i never would have guessed it.
I remember the full size class 8 trucks blowing by me on my dirtbike in AZ in the 80's. And this one is much crazier then those were. All I have to say is Mr. Steele is one driving Mfer to do Willow in that time on a race in the dirt prepped truck with marshmallow suspension. Firm that thing up and lower it with some street tires and it would flat waste the Mustang. And if there are ANY doubts how badass this rig is, have anything that may beat it at Willow follow it in it's playground...
Gotta love Famoso. One of the few perks of living in Bakersfield
I remember Ivan Stuart's Toyota back in the late 80s. That truck was seriously radical back then. By todays standard it would be pretty mild. The advancements in the trucks are amazing.
Alright now let’s see how that raptor and mustang handle across the Nevada desert! Lol
