Lahm scored one of the most important goals of the 2006 World Cup for Germany. After disappointing results 2004 at the europe Cup, they got a new coach (Kliensmann). He kicked out a lot of veterans and got on new and younger players. He made a lot of enemies by doing that. So first game against Costa Rica 2006 at the wold cup in Germany. 3 minuits played. No drama? Not quite. But you wouldn't know unless you actually were a Germany fan around that time. There definitely was quite a bit of it before the 2010 world cup, mostly related to him making a claim on the captaincy of the Germany national team despite that being held by Ballack, the most iconic German player at the time. Still, considering that was pretty much the only incident around him ever, that tells you a lot about the player. But yeah, what a legend he's been. Never got more than three yellow cards within a season, which is a massive feat for a player in his position. Or that one time where he didn't commit a single foul in the Bundesliga for 13 months straight (and yes, he was actually playing in those games). He pretty much perfected the position.
I've never been a fan of Bayern, but always an admirer of Lahm. He's such a shorty dude, but he tackled all of them. Not a single person liked having to play against him. What he lacked in height he made up with his game sense.
he was probably the most unique defender, it is not just the red card thing, but he barely needed fouls anyway. nowdays defenders just like attackers are pulling, dragging etc. being on the edge of a foul, he never needed to do that.
True words! Lahm is quite underrated in Germany, though. I always loved his notorious „Scissor-tackles“, never seen before and never again. True style. ❤
He was without a doubt one of the main players in a golden generation of german football. Not flashy or anything, but smart, leadership skills and worked for his team. Basically everything the national team is lacking right now.
Phillip Lahm is considered one of Germanys best players of all time, even above players like Schweinsteiger and Kroos. He and Miroslav Klose gave Germany so much for so many tournaments. Apart from 2004, those two never placed lower thn 3rd in 7 major tournaments, which is absolutly insane and an all time score, No Messi, Ronaldo or Maradona are even close.
I think he still gets far too little recognition for what he has done for the club and the national team, especially in Germany. Even during his playing days, he was often forgotten in media lists of the best European players, especially at right-back.

(Although in honesty other sources say he had a few less games so it goes down to 30 games per card). In perspective that's almost a season uncarded. Add in his england performance which while few didn't add any extra cards and you have a beast of a player. Shame his knees were a constant problem.
