When I played football I was a midfielder more often 10 but sometimes 8 or even winger but when I started to watch nesta + maldini performances something changed inside me. Defending became my thing. Now I’m older, I’m a dad and stopped playing in a team but I still have more passion for defending players than the others. For me players like nesta, maldini, desailly, hierro, campbell, thuram, cafu were my heroes they were beasts
You are definitely old school. The new generation doesn't even know half of those players. Back in the day, defense was an art, and we loved it more than offense sometimes. We were happy to see a good game even tho the score was 0 - 0.

I became a Milanisti in 1998 when I was 12 y/o. As a young girl who just started falling in love with the sport, I only paid attention to the strikers and midfielders. How lucky was I to then quickly learned that what made the golden era of Milan back then was the defenders. I just remember how safe it felt like knowing we had Maldini and Nesta (plus Dida) and when one of them wasn't able to play it literally felt like there was a hole. These two are legends and it was truly a privilege to witness them play in my lifetime.
i honestly think the difference b/w them and todays defenders is that today they focus on keeping possession instead of clearing which causes them to make multiple mistakes while defenders then just did their job and left the rest for the midfielders and kept the ball outta the net
