Chance wanted to be pitied, but he knew he wouldn’t get any sympathy for what happened to his family so he claimed he was a veteran.

It was neither an excuse , Nor there was any lying. It's a recognized coping Mechanism. You try to get rid of or suppress your feelings in any way. Some do that by projection , Some by dissociation. In this case , By _stolen Valor_

So this guy pretended to be a veteran because he set his family on fire. Sounds like a lousy excuse to lie.

He wasn't a disgusting person, he's not the only person to accidentally start a fire. And he was hurting. Maybe the reason why he made up the lie was because he needed support and he knew he couldn't get help if people knew the truth. And by calling him disgusting it means he was right to think that.
He made a mistake and is paying for it every day
No he shouldn't have said he was a veteran. But he wasn't a disgusting person not willing to own up to what he did. He relives it over and over. He more than likely does have PTSD but that's only accepted for soldiers

When you accidentally go through something horrible, wouldn't you much rather rephrase or rework the pain into something you'd be praised/recognized for? It's much easier to force yourself to believe one thing, that you're a wounded veteran than a drunk who accidentally killed his family. Being seen as a veteran would def help my psyche.

@@GaslightingIsEvil He still has to take responsibility for all that though. He chose to get drunk. And in that drunken state, he chose to light a cigarette in an area with highly flammable material. While he didn't intend to burn his family to death, he still made choices that directly lead to that. It wasn't just a hapless accident with a bunch of factors outside of his control or that a reasonable person couldn't see causing a fire. This isn't a case of "there was a gas leak that I didn't know about and I made a spark unknowingly by hitting two pieces of metal together, and that caused an explosion" or something. Any reasonable person knows not to mess with a cigarette around flammable materials. Any reasonable person knows that hay is highly flammable. Any reasonable person knows it's a bad idea to get drunk.
He made choices that easily lead to the fire. He doesn't get to just let that go, nor does he get to escape the consequences by ending himself. He needs to face the fact that he killed his family by being completely reckless, and needs to work towards making amends somehow.
Instead he tries to cope with all that by stolen valor. It is indeed gross. And disgusting.
If instead of burning his family to death, he got behind the wheel while drunk and ran over his family, he'd be arrested for a DUI and vehicular manslaughter...at minimum. But somehow, because it's a fire, people have more sympathy for him?

@@weavercs4014 He didn't technically commit the crime of stolen valor. The crime of stolen valor requires you to get some kind of tangible benefit from the lie. He also didn't impersonate a military officer bc he never wears a uniform. I understand that what he did is still insulting to military members but he didn't commit a crime.
Edit to add that I forgot to mention that my original question had nothing to do with any potential crime. Even if he had done what fits the legal definition of stolen valor, in most states that wouldn't be reason enough to break confidentiality. Even when it comes to crimes, there are very strict roles about what kind of crimes warrant breaking confidentiality. In most states it requires direct threats of physical violence. But some count crimes like drug trafficking and money laundering. I doubt any states have an exception for stolen valor but I may be wrong.

It's a crime to impersonate or pretend to be a veteran. There was a guy in Canada many years ago who bought a uniform and badges etc online and he went to a remembrance day ceremony and pretended to be a veteran. He was Interviewed by a news station and he lied and an actual veteran saw the Interview on the tv and investigated and the man was charged
