Never seen Leo stand so still before..
not for the lack of trying. He tried :)
Tjita1 Agreed he never stands still
This Saxaphone shop got Leo P to stand still with this one weird trick!
And you never will again!
Never seen Leo before.
“What’s your range on contrabass?”
Leo: yes
isn't that his range on saxophones in general?
Derpy Sheep he can’t get as low as he can on contra tho
It’s not range what he’s doing is biting his reed to make a controlled squeak

I’m 80 and never exposed to the dude before. Watched 8-10 videos of him today. Blown away. What a talent.
Don't disagree. He's talented in the way a street drummer playing drums on 5 gallon buckets is. It's a skill, almost like playing scale variations. I'd like to hear more music and less showman techniques. @@hirkimerwilberfart2413

The most impressive thing to me, is the attack and decay of the lower notes. A pipe on a large pipe organ takes time to begin to resonate, then, continues to resonate even after the airflow has been cut off. This sax can produce its low notes immediately, then, stop, or move on to another note. I've never seen this done on a tuba, which I assume has a similar range to this huge sax. A tuba cannot transition from note to note, nearly as quickly as this saxophone.
Nicely done, Leo!!!!
@AJ H. I watched the video again, and noticed that he immediately allows the valves to open, which I'm sure, helps dampen the resonance. that's how I think he gets the immediate decay.
I agree, mad skills.
I could transition low to high on a susaphone pretty quick but not quite on a tuba and it always bugged me.
A very skilled tuba player could definitely do it
A skilled enough tuba player can definitely quickly jump several octaves with ease
The keys are so loud they act as a background percussion instrument lmao
Take a listen to Judges by Collin Stetson he actually hooks up microphones into his bass sax to act like percussion instruments
I actually thought it was drums at first😂
Everything about this is loud.
Tyler Roberts agreed
they sound like brushes lightly tapping on a loosed snare as if it was soft jazz
Leo P: Why am I playing this I cant even dance

Give him another couple of days and he’ll be swinging that around like the BBC Proms concert.
Rumor has it that exact contrabass sax was never played again due to the sheer amount of awesomeness that was played through it that day.
He's using a 2x4 for a reed
@The Awkward Shoe: Oh man, that was too funny!
Lol
Oh shit that was like a joke
Not funny, didn’t laugh. Your joke is so bad I would’ve preferred or go over my head and you having to re explain the joke to me. To be honest, this is a horrid attempt at trying to get a laugh out of me. Not a chuckle, not a hehe, not even a subtle burst of air out of my esophagus. Science says before you laugh your brain preps your face by twitching your face muscles but I didn’t feel the slightest twitch. 0/10 this joke is so bad I cannot believe anyone legally allowed you to be creative at all. The amount of brain power you must have put into that joke has the potential to power every house on earth. Get a personality and learn how to make jokes, read a book. I’m not saying this to be funny, I genuinely mean it on how this is just bottom barrel embarrassment at comedy. You’ve single handedly killed humor and every comedic act on the planet. I’m so disappointed that society has failed as a whole in being able to teach you how to be funny.
Excruciatingly what is? my copypasta?

Some say that Leo doesn't have lung, he has portable air compressor. Very fact he played this monster of a sax, didn't get blue in the lips and walked away is amazing. When I worked with a theater company doing sound engineering, we had a contra bass sax and the guy that played was always weak in the knees and need to lied down during intermissions. Love Leo just whole persona and control, keep it up.
They told me he has a side-hustle blowing up air mattresses on a campground
Bravo!
Great energy and sense of timing!

Leo: I'll still make you my b!tch even when standing still!
That's still the most dancing I've ever seen from a contrabass saxophone
You can see him trying to
Everytime I see this man he has a different hair colour.

The contrabass sax is actually quite old Leo just has the ability to play it like that

i thought more of a jazz band
No one has ever made me want to buy a contrabass sax more in my life
Ayyy sax gang
Greetings fellow traveler 👀
It costs all my life
@Yuval Agam you must have a very nice arm and leg.
I don't even know how to play sax, but Leo P makes me want to buy a baritone sax and now contrabass sax too 😅
I love the way when in a music environment like a store or practice room, playing any instrument with bass gets you automatic percussion via passive vibrations.
Nothing passive about them.
And here comes Leo P to remind me that I am not finished practicing simple pentatonic patterns!!! Love this guy!
No one talks about how he plays this for 6 minutes straight without getting tired????
Oh no, I agree completely. I don't how he didn't just pass out some point!
Mad chops
Guys played moanin', which itself is 9 minutes
Dude busks, he talks about playing "basically forever" on a lesson with Grace Kelly too. Endurance sport lungs.
If one of my bands would let me I could do 10-15 min long impro soloes when I get in the zone. I do it pretty often at home. I do play the trumpet though
Next BBC prom he'll be jumping around with this monstrosity. The absolute madman. Amen.
with a neck strap
@@babiesmakinbabies that'll just cut off his entire blood flow lol
HIW Alex ahhahahaha
Amen
It's too good cause you can see him wanting to jump around with it like he usually does but it's just so massive
I'd like to see Leo P play a soprano. Hes always playing something deep, but I want to see him play those high notes. It'd be so awesome to see him play a tiny 'ol soprillo as well!
I have seen video of him rocking a Bb clarinet.
There's a video of Leo playing the soprillo. Give him some time; he'll master it yet.
The lung power required for this is astounding. I’m exhausted just watching him play. I played tuba in concert band in college on a big-ass Miraphone BBb tuba, and I can only imagine the lungs it takes to make this contrabass sax sing.
This is the first time I have ever heard this instrument actually sound good
Check out The Nuclear Whales Saxophone Orchestra, they also feature this instrument, and it sounds great.
How rude 😤😤😤
It’s sounded good before
Right? It usually sounds splatty and has no tone. I’ve never heard someone play it with staccato notes or even at a quick tempo-makes it sound like a synthesizer in electronic music.
@@razrv3lc when Leo does those smooth runs on it it really sounds good. But when it's just short staccato notes it's suuuuper splatty
Nobody talks about the fact that he needs no drummer when the keys literally clank as loud as a ride.
Top Secret lol same with my tuba
And when that low note sounds like a kick drum
They look like man hole covers !
If you've ever listened to any of Colin Stetson's original albums (and some of his soundtrack compositions as well) you'll notice he often puts a microphone by the valves to use them as percussion which sounds great!
MIDI triggers is the next generation to trick that out.
Not going to lie, this is actually my favorite version of him, and I feel that he could be a ridiculously good bass artist
It’s impressive how he plays chromatically, it’s so fast and smooth on everything he plays
Leo p - walks in
“What’s your biggest sax you got”
They dont have j elle strainer sub contrabass :(
HKH From PH epphesem makes them also
At least that’s not the biggest one
Still easily hits higher notes then middle school trumpet players

honestly hitting notes in general on trumpet is harder than on sax, so i wouldn’t say much

Leo P is by far my favorite saxophonist
I’ve never cared for sax in general but I’ve been binge watching this guy for a couple of days now. Fantastic musician!
Leo: I will trade my kidney for a 3rd lung
I'd trade 3/4 of my liver for a 3rd lung
Why? Because Livers can regrow from 3/4 being removed, on both sides
Would probably have to drop the kidney just to make space for the third lung of Thor, what with how big that sax is.

Wrong title:
Contrabass Saxophone meets Leo P
Before going down to Georgia with a golden fiddle, the devil first stopped through New York and said to himself “no thanks”
He's trying to dance while standing still
And it works
This would be the sax player's version of pole dancing.
It looks like he's just humping it.
1:09 - 1:21😂
Calvin Hampton Yeah, I was like, wow, this is a borderline sexual experience for him.. lol
You can play the contrabass off the ground a band member of mine did it. It's horrifying however
Because only Leo P can make a contrabass seem like a viable instrument! So gooooood and the altissimo!
Jen Bateman he kinda makes it sound like a Bari
He's cool but its not altissimo-its a controlled mouthpiece squeal, its actually easier to do on lower saxes as long as you have good pitching!
@alterdestiny yeah baritone is more convenient and can achieve similar effect
@alterdestiny no
He did do some altissimo a few times tho
In Leo's hands the essential character of the instrument - the stalwart, phlegmatic, dray horse of specialized ensembles - simply folds up and gives way to his intensely physical ability. One is torn between wanting to pass the hat to raise funds for a contrabass of his own, and feeling that he should never again be allowed near one, lest the entire purpose of such an instrument be outmoded.
before i clicked on this video i said "this is gonna be fucking crazy" and i was right. leo is fucking amazing, i play the bari sax and im in just in awe at how he does some of the shit he does lmao
How can he just go on and on for 6 minutes straight
The sheer amount of air he has to move to make that thing sound, much less play like that for 6 minutes, that's impressive.
He can do it because he is magic
He's a madman. The best kind of madman cuz he plays sax!
How? He is not playing over changes or with anyone else. He is using his well practiced tricks and pentatonic variations in one key.
I would probably pass out
This man has insane breath control/lung power. Him dancing like a man possessed while playing like this is common for him, too, which makes it even more impressive.
I went straight to bari in 1 week from trumpet with no problem. I think oboe with pro reed is great training for embochure
He has all that extra lung power usually devoted to dancing available to play since he can't move around.

Like the arrangement very much, is a proof that, with skill, you can extract a lot of life and amusement, even from extreme instruments, like this...
The best part about this instrument is that the pitch does not distort as it goes lower like contrabass clarinets do. Every time he plays a low A, there is no question what the pitch is. When contrabass clarinet plays that note (written low D), it’s very hard to hear the center of the pitch. Eppelsheim is an instrument wizard!!
