    If I could afford it I would totally buy that vintage contra-bass, it's sound is so hypnotizing.

      They’re ergonomically really rough, but the sound is indeed much richer and more complex than the tubax or even the eppeilsheim contras.

    What's shocking to me is this vintage contrabass sax costs half as much a used, damaged, student model contrabassoon lol

    These 2 instruments are just works of art, especially with the stories behind them and all the great musiciens who played them

    That "thumb hook" on Orsi is funny, though; like anyone could lift up that contrabass sax and hold it while relying on thumb :-)

    As a former BariSax and Bass Clarinet player, I'd love to try Bass and ContraBass Sax. I also played Tuba, Trombone, and Euphonium.

    Pretty sure Anthony Braxton plays that orsi (and has since the 70s!) Really cool horn, great and unique sound, love the one moment on "Creative Orchestra Music 1976" where it's a duet between Braxton on the Contrabass sax and Rroscoe Mitchell on Bass saxophone

      Saw Anthony Braxton at the Knitting Factory NYC mid 1990’s and spoke with him after the gig. He is an amazingly talented musician! He played a contrabass at Iridium too.

    Jim, I really like you and always enjoy your videos. That Orsi is very cool and it has so much more character than the tubax regardless of its clear advantages (ergonomics, portability, tuning, etc.) There’s no denying the tubax is a beautiful work of art and I’m sure they are both the perfect tool for specific (niche and less than lucrative) jobs but, for me, the Orsi wins this absurd battle.
    PS-Don’t worry, sax gals and non-guys. I’m sure he didn’t mean to exclude you and he’d happily take your £17,500. ;o)

    It is possible I would get a bass/contrabass in the near future, but this video proved to me that a modern day B.E. would be the best option so I'm glad for this video.

    Awesome saxophones! I like what Benedikt Eppelsheim is doing with his Saxophones and how he makes the more unusual/unique saxophones and how he came up with a compact Contrabass which makes it easier to store and play. If I could ever afford one and I had the room, I'd get a Tubax for sure. What kind of mouthpieces do these use, bass? Something I think should have been mentioned is how to clean these since they are so big. How you go about cleaning and swabbing them after playing, especially the Orsi with its huge size?

    • @urticanshark2413
      @urticanshark2413 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don't clean them. You just let them grow an unique ecosystem inside. And hope it doesn't try to kill you.

      I'm pretty sure that yellow mp on the tubax is the Michael Wilbur signature Syos piece

    • @saxworldwide
      @saxworldwide  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Dave, there are spit valves on both instruments, which helps a lot! You could swab the top section of each instrument with one of the typical bari sax cleaners. As for mouthpieces, you can get away with using a bari mpce on the Tubax, but we happened to have Pauline from SYOS in our store a few weeks back and we tried out her bass mouthpiece, which proved to work very well. Proportionally it is better than using a bari piece (for tuning). I also used Legere bass reeds for both instruments. As for the Orsi, the mpce that comes with it is so huge it's almost a joke. But it works! Jim

    Yes it’s awesome to have one these to own and have bragging rights, but in reality no paid musician will ever own one of these, due to the production and cost of the horn between thirty to forty thousand US dollars just for the instrument it self, 2nd no regular repair technician will fix it due to size , parts and design, have to take it to the manufacture, 3rd cost of repairs/ complete repaid and overhaul looking around Ten thousand dollars or more,4th carting it around for gigs,you would NEED long cargo van that min ten feet long and a couple of people to carry it. This mostly applies to the stretch out orsi contra bass sax .Tubax you can use a car or small suv for transportation.Because of its size it’s in a paper clip formation.Also repairs might be easier to perform due to size space on the bench. But all in all nice review.Musician And repair technician from Canada 🇨🇦

    I think the left hand layout on the Orsi would line up better if played with the horn tilting to the left rather than upright. That may be what they had in mind by angling those key touches the way they did. th-cam.com/video/hXBeu7o9uUM/w-d-xo.html

      Great on the Epplesheim - on the Orsi, it takes more 'pushing' to not be a little flat around the middle. Loads of air support needed!

    Can't one be done without that extremely fast widening of the bell at the end? Or even no bell at all? There's no need for extra harmonics on these ones. They're farty enough.
