I can tell the level of education Derren has by listening to his words. Not just because of the tricks themselves but the simple fact that I have found "professional" books on persuasion and hypnosis that use the word "subconscious" which in psychoanalysis doesn't exist. Derren here uses the word unconscious here instead. He's not your typical street performer. This man knows what he's talking about very well.
Of course. Psychology students and psychologists aren't any different, they just study people's behaviours. It doesn't mean they know every trick in the book and aren't susceptible to certain things. If anything, the only thing you couldn't do is involve them in a psychological study because they'll know what is being studied/how to twist the results.
To me it looks like he never actually reveals the money in either envelope after the second one, he just opens both envelopes but then moves on to the next thing. She might have gotten it right!
@@danielpinto8621 😂 no, this trick is not an illusion hahahahaha. This is mentalism which is why he used psychology students but even if you don't understand that, how could you call this an illusion? Do you know what an illusion is? Lol! Maybe you mean slight of hand, but you're still wrong.
he speaks fast, so the unconscious messages he sends are like a machine gun to the receiver and also the time that he gives "the player" to choose constraints the answer to a primal instinct instead of allowing then to take a step back and rationalize their answer :D
Derren is great actor. This effect is only part psychology. The rest is .... well he is a magician. Mentalism is a form of magic. It's interesting that this could have been presented as as psychic feat. Although, I think it is more intriguing as "psychological".
Most of the time, Derren just uses classical magic ideas (e.g. sleight of hand, forces, prep work). However, he mixes things up with a bit of "psychology" and "persuasion" just to serve as misdirection (i.e. another classic magic technique). He revealed his method once when he did the "chess GM impersonation trick". During a chess simul where he played both the Black and White sides, he simply copied players' moves and played them against other players-- thereby giving the impression he was a strong player.
@Daniel Pinto I don't know the precise method for this one (but I have broken down, note for note, a lot of his other famous effects after re-examining them with a skeptical magician's eye). One way he could do the trick in this particular video is by sleight of hand. He could be quickly- and selectively- adding bills (or removing/revealing bills) based on the person's answer. Notice how fast and concealing his hand movements are, and notice that he never lets the participants handle or examine anything.
I saw through most of this. The bluffing one was confusing but the others were kind of obvious when you know what signals to look for, particularly the second one. It was so obvious, I thought he was hoping that they would pick up on it and choose the other one.
AliTheAllStar It's tailorered to each person he does it on. He reads how that person reacts to his direction. So while you may have "not been fooled" by watching a video after the fact it's highly probable he'd still "trick" you into choosing whichever one he wanted you to pick.
When telling her to keep her finger on one of the envelopes, he knew that the most natural position for it to end up in would be on the side of the hand which she used. He was aware of which position it would be in from the second her finger was on the envelope.
There is a point that once people have the impression that they are better than you or you are better than them in this case derren brown showing hows its done, he already knows you are in a state of submission and people have very predictable traits when you are submissive. But when dominant, you are unpredictable to them, its a mind fuck to some but its very simple, as soon as you miss the tiny piece the rest is a mystery. And then theres the ego that stays with everything
The biggest factor here is the fear of the worst possible scenario, if she had changed her mind at the end she would lose sleep over it for a couple weeks and regret it, so she chose the most comfortable option.
I believe what's being said is there couldn't have been a failed attempt, because the trick doesn't use psychology, and instead involves sleight of hand.

No, that is not how it was done. The whole point of Mind Control and the whole purpose of this show when Channel 4 launched it was to get away from the basic tricks regular magicians were using. Derren had to use other techniques and this is one where his body language, and his words are key. Watch it again, and look at his movements and wording, and see how they are used to persuade the person to chose the envelope Derren wants them to choose

I've watched enough of Darren Brown, that I figured out how to pick pocket while the person is talking to me! I was able to steal my friend's wallet from right in front of her! XD
She is easy to read and manipulate, the envelope she picked the second time he asked her shows she is easy to manipulate, the fact that he easily read her when it was her turn shows she is easy to read, giving her a false sense of belief in herself when he said "you're very good" made her stick with her choice in the end.
For the people saying "Every envelope has money so he just opens the one she didn't pick and say look you're wrong." A.) He opens both envelopes either before or after each round. B.) The height of the bills sticks out beyond the V cut on the back of each envelope so just lifting the flap is enough to expose the contents.
It's amazing how Derren is so smooth at manipulating the unconscious mind. Which means that he can control anyone's behavior while they are unaware of it.
