Making a Tiki Drink while WAY Too Hungover | How to Drink

  • The Suffering Bastard has its roots in Cairo, served to allied troops in the 2nd World War on their way back to front.
    **********************************
This is the rare drink that has a definitive and easily researched history: it was invented in Cairo at the Shepherd Hotel by chemist turned bartender Joe Scialom during the Second World War. The bar at the Shepherd had become a sort of de facto officers club where guys waiting to cycle back to the front would cool their heels, and this concoction was a favorite hangover cure. There IS another version served by Trader Vic’s, but it bears little resemblance to this original version. Being fairly hungover myself this day, I felt it was a prime opportunity to try this one out, I did and it was fantastic.
4 oz. or 120 ml. Ginger Beer
.5 oz. or 15 ml. Lime Juice
.25 oz. or 8 ml. Demerara Syrup
1 oz. or 30 ml. London Dry Gin
1 oz. or 30 ml. Bourbon
    Two Dashes Angostura Bitters
    Shake and open pour
    Garnish with nice things

Remember something's only considered a disorder if it interferes with your ability to make money and live your life. Therefore is he simply a professional alcoholic.
Kind of like Hemingway just with less literary skills. Although that's not to say that if Hemingway were alive now in the time of TH-cam he wouldn't be doing something very similar, because I actually think he would be.

Hey Greg, I know that this episode is a bit old, but I think the reason the Bourbon was so overpowered is because Eagle Rare just doesn't seem to be prominent when mixed. Compare it in something like a bourbon and Coke with honestly any other bourbon, and the Eagle Rare variant may just taste like coke. It's a strange one, but very nice neat or on the rocks

Huge Fan from Germany here, i really dont want to get political but i think i have to say that although the Wehrmacht certainly wasnt "clean" by any means, it is estimated that about 10 percent of the actual fighting forces were Hard nazis, the rest were.. Well, soldiers. The officers were pretty much all nazis, ss were huge mega-nazis-assholes, but your run of the mill german soldier really didnt get to choose.
Little anectode here: my great grandfather didnt go to war but was a member of the nazi party. When my dad found out (super left hippy type) he confronted him about it and my great grand father just went: "i worked in a factory. I had five kids. The economy Was fucked. They told me if i wanted to keep the Job i had to fall in line. What would you have done".

Ginger has so many great medicinal uses, and it settles the stomach. If someone wanted to really cure a hangover, ginger is the way to go... and bubbly ginger, even better. This is such a great idea. The bourbon and gin are supposed to be underplayed - this was a “hair of the dog” drink to help get someone back on their feet. I think if it tasted too much like gin or bourbon, it would defeat the purpose of crafting a medicinal beverage with just enough alcohol to stave off the withdrawal symptoms of a hangover. It’s really quite a brilliant drink in this formulation. Kudos to Joe Scialom! and brilliant as always, Greg.

Love me some Eagle Rare. That tends to be my go-to for an everyday-type bourbon. I've yet to get some actual Buffalo Trace, and I haven't had Michter's yet, but if it's as good as their rye, I might have a new member of the "I love this" list.

@@chrisvisser-fee2631 it's not just eating a bunch of food, though. On the back end of a bit too much drinking, your body is hard at work converting ethanol into simple sugars, and producing insulin to deal with those, and using a lot of water to do it. Your body's capacity to deal with more sugar will be kind of overwhelmed, but you're going to need calories, so you need another delivery method, namely protein and fat.
Because you've also utilized a bunch of water in this process of breaking down what is, essentially, a low-grade poison, you're going to need water, but you're also going to need salt to hold onto said water, since your body hydrates through osmosis.
So, it's not just eating a lot of food, it's eating a lot of salt, fat, and protein specifically, to facilitate refueling an already taxed system.

This is one of my favorites; but what I recommend is to replace the bourbon with Basil Hayden’s Dark Rye. They age it in port barrels so it adds a bit of something that shines through the ginger and the rye adds to the bitters profile.

Eyyy, something I can make! Had to make demerara syrup before I made the drink, but that only took 10 mins or so. I definitely feel that you won't mistake this for an alcohol-free drink, the bourbon is right there, front and center. Together with the ginger beer. I'm using a pretty cheap bourbon (Evan Williams) and I've never liked it much, although it's fine in mixed drinks like this one. Time for an upgrade I guess? I'm thinking either Bulleit Bourbon, Makers Mark or Knob Creek, as a starting point. Anyways, nice cocktail overall, I'll make this one again later!
