Soft-spoken male ASMR about department stores and the history of retail.
In this video, you are invited to discover how retail evolved from the Antiquity and its markets to today's malls, supermarkets and online stores. Purchasing products was very different in the past, and things like the display of products, customer service or fixed prices took centuries to appear. Department stores innovated in the 19th century and gave birth to modern retail, transforming shopping into entertainment and accompanying a dramatic change in the symbolic value of merchandise. Let's see how and why they did this, and how names like Saks, Bloomingdale's, Macy's, Sears, Harrods, Selfridges, Lewis's, Au Bon Marché, Printemps, Galeries Lafayette, Kaufhof, Mitsukoshi, La Rinascente or El Corte Ingles became household names in their respective countries, or even internationally.

I cannot tell you how much I love this! As someone who is obsessed with vintage departments stores and their impact on society, I have been waiting for an ASMR/relaxation video on this very subject, for years! I was even thinking of making a talk about them myself, simply because no one else had (...but I didn’t really want to, because I wanted to be able to listen to someone else’s track and enjoy it - I can’t relax to my own ASMR videos!). And now, here it is - thank you so much for making this :)

Fantastic video and very informative. The topic is very relevant for consumer culture and I love how you covered the early bazaars and marketplaces all the way up to the modern superstores (like target/wlamart) and online shopping. I always favored your science and technology videos but this one kept my attention with it's historical significance today with the downturn of department stores all over the world. You are the real life maester from FFX and a true master ASMRtist.

I'm a huge fan of ASMR with female voices, triggers it better for me personally. However, you sir, and your deep dark chocolatey French accent do the job quite well.
This made me nostalgic for the old-fashioned department store that my city used to have. If I wanted to buy quality, that was where I went. They had the best lingerie department in town and the leather wallet I bought from there over 20 years ago is still going strong. I miss that place so much, it was truly beautiful.

I'm sorta sad you left out ZCMI. It's one of the earliest department stores in the western US. It's not super huge, but it's a fun one.

I first felt ASMR in the makeup and skincare section and it was especially strong if it was a handsome young man showing me a product, and sometimes I bought something just out of gratitude for the attention. People really are so starved for positive attention that they'll pay for it.
Tell me about it! A few years ago I bought an ugly painting to an old lady for way too much money, just because she mesmerized me with her husky voice and I wanted her to keep speaking...
