Volkswagen ID3 | Living with an EV long term Ep 1

    I've been trying out VW's new ID.3 model for a long term test to really get the vibe of using an EV on a daily basis. Usually, I swap out of a car after a week, less sometimes even, so it's been great to experience something so new over a longer period.
    My aim of these episodes in particular is to explain an EV to those who really just want a car that gets them around but that happens to be electric. I'll include some tips and hacks for existing ID owners but generally, think of these as getting to know an EV from a basics perspective.
    If you would like anything in particular covered or have a suggestion that could be filmed in future episodes with the VW ID.3, please get in touch either in the comments, DM'ing on social or using the email address below - thanks for watching!

    The best conversion experience for any ICE driver is to take one for test drive. I did and within 10 miles my lovely Golf TSI was on its way into Autotrader and I was thinking about how I could get a home charger fitted. The fun of driving one of these cars is genuinely infectious. I've now owned my E Niro for 3 months ( All in lock down of some kind) and driving it over to visit my elderly mother is truly, truly a joy ! I always arrive with a smile on my face.

    2,7kW is enough to charge about 30kWh over 12 hous of night. It's like recovering 125 miles (200km) every night !!!
    It's amazing how much you can recover just from a common plug.

    Great to break the stigma associated with EV’s in episode 1. Education is key, almost as important as the national infrastructure required to make them mainstream. 👌🏼

    Have this car since launch, and so far so good. I changed from a diesel Arteon and was a little apprehensive at first, but after a few days of ownership I was sold. The driving experience is fantastic. It feels like I'm driving a hot hatch. I've regularly travelled 360km round trips to Dublin without charging. The range is reduced in the cold weather, particularly with the heat on. For short journeys I use the heated seats and steering wheel. They're excellent. There has been a few small software glitches and the screen is laggy, especially on startup, but new software update should remedy these issues. Wall charger at home costs approximately 4 euro from 0 to 100% on nightsaver electricity. This would be approximately 17 euro at public charge points, so it's important to have a home wall charger. It's an easy car to live with. The most difficult part of ownership was syncing the car with my app on the phone. The app is great for pre heating your car in the morning and controlling the charging. The car hasn't been found wanting and I'd highly recommend it. The boot is spacious for my needs but I'm sure the ID4 will suit bigger families and all the paraphernalia that goes with that. I'm saving approximately 120euro a month on fuel and that's covering about 20k Kms per annum.

      If only the lovely ID3 came with the even better analogue clock from the Arteon dash now that would be great. I do love that old type nostalgia in a modern car 😁 Great feedback John and delighted to hear it is going well for you. ICE to EV is not as life changing as people think, in fact it’s a pleasurable and relaxing way to commute in my experience 👍🏽

      @@stevenrafferty7665 Not sure on the specific equipment models, but when I was getting my Id3 first I picked the basic model in white which cost 34k as opposed the the Plus model which was 42k. There was certainly not 8k worth of extras and it appears VW have struggled to sell the Plus model as it's ID4 money.

    Just watched in full HD, great video, well done. I have owned mine since Sept, am very happy with it. Only problem apart from the few software glitches has been one of my key fobs needing to be reprogrammed.
    As mentioned by some one else, worth getting a better energy supplier! Costs me about €4.50 to fill up 0-100% on night rate. Others have got cheaper rates.
    I have had many good cars over the years, this for me now is perfect. I am not slow, but try to drive smoothly. I don't like aircon or having the car too hot. I am managing about 300km during winter and about 400km during the warmer months. But almost no motorway driving. A careful driver should be able to achieve WLTP during the warmer months.
    Very impresses by the build quality, you are really isolated from the weather outside. With the rear motor you hear very little noise at all, the regen is so smooth especially in auto mode.
    Just a pity VW released the car with unfinished software. Doesn't worry me, but I am sure for some it does..

I'm also interested in knowing how much range it usually loses overnight, I've heard that it loses about 1% per night which wouldn't be too bad. Anyway, thanks for doing this I can't wait for the next episode!

      I have owned an ID3 life pro performance for around a month now leased through ONTO electric car leasing which has been fantastic. My ID3 when charged to 100% in weather below 10degrees would give me a range of around 200-220 miles. However, as mentioned on this video if you do use the climate it tends to drop by 20 miles or so to heat the car. I have noticed though that when you do heat the car and turn the climate back off again once you are at a nice temp then the range goes back up again which is nice so it doesn't lose completely.
      I have no driveway so solely rely on the Scottish public charging network and have to say I have not had any issues at all with any charger I have visited. They are really easy to use. The 7kw chargers would give a full charge from about 20% in about 4 hours. The rapid chargers do charge the car more quickly but they do lose speed the closer the battery gets to 100% to protect its life. last week I was on a rapid charge station for 10mins and gained 45 miles or range, that though was just after a drive from motorway so the battery was warm. Doing that on a cold battery would not be as quick, but still quick enough. Overall definitely easy enough to own on the public network and are amazing cars.

      @willsmyth639 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      With petrol or diesel cars you still have space to buy a spare wheel if yours didn’t come with one but the ev most would use that space for cables so no room for a spare tyre

    • @keithcarney1097
      @keithcarney1097 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@willsmyth639 not really. BMW cars have no space for a spare wheel. It goes in the boot. EV cables can be stored in the boot also but they take up the space of an extension cord.
      Also, many EV’s have boots and a front trunk space. In my old i3 all the cables and my hiviz etc were in the front boot. No space taken from the boot.
      Also with EV’s like many ICE cars, they have a compartment under the rear boot too.

I don't have a driveway so solely rely on the Scottish public charging network which is pretty good and getting better as it will have too. I do notice that the climate when being used loses a range of around 20miles to heat the car, although if you turn climate back off again range does come back to the battery as it's not all lost straight away and it takes around a minute to heat an EV, much quicker than a ICE car. If you spec an ID4 to the price that it's not far off the Model 3, it would be a close call cause it will be similar to the car in this video. The HUD in the VW is spectacular, really something else. The Model 3 has just been refreshed again and Tesla nail efficiency compared to most but it's really down a case of do you go with the familiar VW name or take a punt on Tesla. I think a well specced ID4 over a standard M3, I'd probably still have to try both - whenever the cheaper ID4 comes out though, the gap is quite big then.

    Good idea to do a longer term review, thanks. I own an ID.3 1st plus. Absolutely love it. The kids love it. One issue maybe you can feed back to VW is the driver assist, lane assist in particular...I need it off because there are no road markings where the car is driven. The lane keep assist just does not understand, and can push you out from the 'ditch' towards the middle of the road even in front of oncoming traffic ( we're talking very narrow back roads here) . I had a volvo that did the same so it's not an issue with the ID.3 , the issue is Irish back roads. Anyway you just turn it off and all is well...? Well no, because at the moment on the ID.3 it turns on again every time you power on the car. Please VW can you make the settings default to last known setting in the next SW rev.??? Don't let this put you off buying the car, because they will fix it, and it won't be an issue for most people to begin with.

Did you use a local electrician? How was the installation? Disruptive or straightforward ? ( On a practical level , like with Holes drilled and laying of cables ) Very close to pulling the trigger on an ID3. Was going to be a toss up with the e-Soul. Darkin EV did mine. I was lucky in that my house was only built in 2019 so it was wired for a charger. Little took off a cover plate and wired in the charger, all very neat. @@Mancozeb100 chargepoints are designed for use in public places, they tend to be pretty vandal proof. Slightly more risk with a tethered chargepoint because of the cable. Chargepoints/cables are also designed to fail safely and also in a way that avoids damage to the car. The Type 2 Plug actually has a scoring on the interior of the plug for it to break in two if for example they decided to stand on top of the cable.
      You do not need a specialised installer to get an EV chargepoint installed. You can buy the chargepoint yourself and any electrician can do the job. It's exactly the same work as an outdoor socket. Only caveat is they should use 6 sq mm SWA cable for the cable run as it's armored and rated for the amperage a chargepoint will pull. To get the grant the electrician needs to fill out a cert and you need to take a few specified photos of the installation, but again they do not need to be on any SEAI list, any RECI electrician will do.

    Nice demo of how range can be affected by using climate control - probably worth explaining it's not because EVs are less efficient or have worse climate control - it's because ICE vehicles are only about 20% efficient (vs 80+ with EVs) so although you will use more fuel in an ICE car too with AC on, it's just that it's so massively inefficient you don't really notice it!

  • @cros13
    @cros13 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just on your demonstration of power usage of the climate control. When you were turning it on and off the system was using quite a bit of energy to raise the cabin temp. So the numbers were way higher than what it will typically use to *maintain* a temperature. That is particularly true of EVs with heat pumps like the ID.3, they are much more efficient when they reach a steady state. In 5C weather the power consumption to keep the car at 21C should be around 500W (0.5 kW). kWh/hour is redundant... that just means exactly the same thing as kW, don't know why VW did that.
    In general on any EV with a heat pump over 40kWh pack capacity, climate is going to cost you between 1% and 5% of your range depending on settings/outside conditions.
    Also the granny cable usually tops out at 230-240V/10A so 2.3-2.4kW as a safety measure, a 7.4kW home EVSE is more than three times faster. Most EVs charge marginally more efficiently on 3.6-7.4kW chargers vs the 2.3kW granny cable... so you'll also save a few cents per charge.
    I pay 7.1c/kWh incl VAT for night rate power, a 10-100% charge incl charging losses of a 58kWh ID.3 would be €3.90 to €4, the 77 has the same pack capacity as my Model 3 LR and would cost about €5.30. The €50/annum surcharge for a night rate meter will pay for itself in 3-4 months for the typical driver, even quicker if you start running appliances on the night rate.

      @@NobbyOnCars Oh, it's important to point out another common misconception. When those costs of a 0-100% charge are given some people incorrectly assume they'll be incurred every night, not just the amount of electricity the car needs to fill the battery. One thing to point out is the typical cost per 100km on night rate for your average efficiency as that more correctly focuses people on driving costing money not charging. And another one is people sometimes forget the cost of fuel they'll be avoiding buying and focus on the extra few euro on the electricity bill.

    • @cros13
      @cros13 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've had chargepoints installed in several dublin apartments I've lived in. Easiest is if you have a designated space in underground parking, because the meters are usually in the car park and you can split power after the meter at the isolator before the run to the apartment consumer unit.
      Hardest situations are terraces where you have common/public paths between you and the car or situations where you don't have allocated parking. For the moment people who can't charge an EV at home... probably shouldn't buy one.

    So if I plugged this in with the granny cable it would take 19 hours 20mins from empty to full charge, why doesn’t this car come with a free 7kw charger included in the price, I don’t believe it will be the future as there is new tech coming out and I’ll wait till 2030-2035 before I would change incase it’s a money pit and left with dead technology (eg like what the mini disc was) ?

      Some brands are doing free chargers, it just depends on what marketing drives are on at a given time.

      VW were including a charger as one of 3 options for the buyers of the 1st edition models, not sure if this is still the case..
      Otherwise, there is still a €600 grant for installing a home charge point.

    I realise you said kWh for power. VW designers use a strange unit for power i.e. kWh/hour which is just Kilowatts. Why didn't they use that on the screen. It is confusing for novices as even a lot of journalists confuse kWh and kW. Even you did but I'll let you off due to the confusing kWh/h on the screen.

    Are people scared and intimidated by EV's or are they just too expensive still?
    I'd go with the later. A lot of people cant afford a £20K car, let alone a £30K car.

    • @NobbyOnCars
      @NobbyOnCars  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They really are yes... some of the comments below from owners will verify that. I've been asked by people does the range not half with wiper being on. Not everyone can afford a 30k car no but without those who can buying them, there will be no used market for the people you mention either.

    • @cros13
      @cros13 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those people don't buy new cars they buy used. And those that do buy new cars spend an average of €37k.
      Today's new cars are tomorrow's used. If people don't buy the cars new they are less available and often more expensive on the used market.
      Which is one of the reasons 2014/2015 Nissan Leafs have seen next to zero depreciation since 2017, used demand is high... and very few were bought new.

    Little is being said about the death of motorcycle due to this daft law that’s little more than a tax to drive I. Cannot help it it a vehicle doesn’t exist to replace what I need and as much as I like the id3 it’s a car of unreasonable compromises in the interior that I find off putting such as no interior seat colour other than gray , the rear window switches, no sunroof or glass roof on the 77kw tour, horrible buggy capacitive touch screen and buttons, what’s wrong with a button even ford got the level right on the pony, and that hazard button turning on way to easy if you brush it is an accident waiting to happen. I hope vw listen and fix this as I am not the only one saying this,
