Bob is a genius. Listen to the youtube videos of all the playin jams from ‘73. He is a jazz player with impeccable taste. Also, the Allman show he sat in on Mt Jam in ‘73. He added so much to that jam, one of the best sit-ins of rock.
Agree with others who have pointed out how deep and wide Bob Weir’s guitar genius goes. His harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic choices - and incredible ability to adjust and pivot in response to the musicians sharing the stage with him - are worthy of intense study and admiration.
It feels like once you understand the concept,you don't need to think about what you are playing, it feels like you are just experiencing it, just going wherever it leads you, it becomes automatic, natural, organic
I have been learning in Bobby’s style for a little over a year now and it has absolutely opened the door wide open in terms of understanding triads, the caged system and voicings. I can’t recommend diving into it if you haven’t it’s a great way to develop as a rhythm player and so much fun. Great job summarizing all of this loved this video
I'm sure you get lots of requests Jeff. But now what we could really use is some insight into how the hell he gets from Truckin to The Other One! Especially late 72 and 73... 9/30/72 he's really loud in the mix, would make a great template. Keep rockin'!

JEFF, In the 80s live concerts which you can get on DVD or watch on youtube during the JAM sections Bob Weir uses so unusual chord voicings, sus chords, extensions which you should watch over and over the JAMs in the 80's concerts to make a video lesson on what chord voices is Bob Weir using. I'm not sure if all the JAMs chord progressions are always bVII to I or try to figure out the JAMS chord progressions also.

His playing is typical camouflaged in the mix with GD- when separated it can sound sharp and angular and perhaps a bit tough to appreciate- but without it,man it really becomes obvious-MaxLove 4 Bob GD forever!!
I've played guitar for decades. And I've adored Bob Weird for decades. I'm ok at the guit-fiddle, but I can't do pinky things very well! My pinky is almost TOO attached to my ring finger on my left hand. I have trouble controlling it and sometimes it just feels like a limp noodle over there Haha. Well, Bobby's stuff gets difficult because of that sometimes. Love him so much though!

"Use the C shape to play the open A chord except it sounds better when you don't and you just play pieces of a chord called a triad which is just three notes because three notes makes a chord except when it's suspended and then it doesn't. That's what Hendrix did." Fuuuuuuuuck, I just want to strum a guitar, how much theory does it take?
Thing about Bob Weir is, he's not a very good guitarist. Rhythmically...he's mediocre. He wrote some good songs with the help of Jerry, Phil , Hunter & Barlowe, but all in all....highly overrated.
In the context of the Dead, he’s a genius. One example would be Morning Dew from their Europe 72 album. That said , lotta people don’t care for the dead.. whatchagunnado.
