This interview with these two legends is a delightful experience and John Mayer’s input brings an ‘east coast’ sensibility to a west coast band to create a new dynamic. I cannot wait to see them perform in Europe hopefully not too long into the future with Mayer in the fold.
I was surprised and amazed at how good this band is and how much I liked Mayer in this band. My husband got me into the Dead in the 1980s, which was already past their prime and I never really got it. Now I get it. The music IS endlessly bountiful for sure...blues, jazz, country, folk....lyrics that incorporate spirituality, literature, religion, life, death... that's why the Grateful Dead music is so rewarding
It's kinda funny how John is trying to put this into words. Music is basically automatic. You can't get jammed up with overthinking it. It's a lifeform and life force of its own and it a continual stream. Everyone involved has to go with the flow and take flight. It's a magical thing.
It goes away internally & externally .. i can feel that.. think on ur feet to keep it fresh.. MAYER YOU CAN DEFINITELY HOLD UR OWN. THANK YOU.. HOPE TO SEE U N DALLAS IN AUGUST.. 2017. 🌸🌸SHAKA-LIFE🌸🌸
After hearing Dead & Company at the LOCKN' Festival, I believe they have reached this new plateau they are discussing. Mayer is an absolute perfect fit to the band; he adds to it but doesn't overpower it. Best I've heard the band sound in years. Love the effort to move the band even further down the road.
Wow, this is the kind of dialect the American population should be ingesting everyday. Two brilliant minds with excellent grammar. I subconsciously compared this to an interview with a young hip-hop/pop/entitled artist (pick any of them), and I'm not afraid to admit that I am terrified of the current and future music generations influence.
I implore you to watch Kendrick Lamar's interview with Rick Rubin. Not every music artist (from any generation) is going to be a well spoken, intelligent person but there are definitely some smart and thoughtful ones out there now (Frank Ocean, Parquet Courts, and Father John Misty also come to mind). Regardless, no need to be terrified about the music of a younger generation considering people were scared about rock/punk/hip-hop etc., people just want to hear new sounds regardless of the message.
@@troy8420 Agreed to a degree. Most "commercial pop" or whatever is generally written for the lowest common denominator. Stupid begetting more stupid and on down the line . . . I think, however, it's more and much deeper than music or anything. It's the when evil getting worse, and the light still coming through regardless. I think? Lol But God bless this gig the Dead and Company. And bless this new John and Bobby show. Lol 🤗
Thats honestly mainly just racist. Kendrick, J Cole, Jonwayne, Tyler the creator, Frank Ocean, Anderson Paak. All smart rappers that are under 30 years old. All genuine musicians
Frederic Flintstone it wasn't racist at all. race was never mentioned in his comment. in fact, take a look at the majority of 'pop' singers and you will realize most are white females. not everything is racist, you know. ;)
I hope people understand this, how important this is that they're talking about, for without that there can never be any good, just a bunch of crap that everyone else has already done, and Who wants to listen to that Dead & Company hope you will be here for some time
Yes. It's very heartening. The body of work, the way it continues to play out and forward. At dead50 it seemed like yes, they were (naturally) wound up - the whole thing was hyped (mostly in the best ways) but much like they were also really trying, endeavering in Chicago to lay out the...code, the DNA for the GD experience/experiment/adventure, get it documented in it's most current developed form so it could live on. Laying it out to culture, humanity. While phenomenal, it also came out a little..clumsily as it usually does when trying to pin it down. But then to hear 'em play with John, and here talk about it in the now, with an eye toward.....futher.....wow. This is truly the most lucid stuff anybody in/around the dead has managed to verbalize. It ain't over yet! As in Bobby's dream, we may not live to see the end of this and that idea is a big ray of light in the world of today.
Phil Lesh & Friends already figured this out. Lesh modernized Dead songs and his shows were phenomenal, but I absolutely support Dead & Company in their journey.
John, you've gotten much more fluid over the past several years and that's what's important. All the embellishments are gravy, but to get to the next level it's time to not be afraid to start taking some risks!
The all time best period was the Brent years - Jerry and Brent interplay was joyous and inspired - Jerry playing at his best - listening to Mayer's playing with the Dead makes me even appreciate Jerry more - he was that brilliant
I have it admit that I was skeptical when John Mayer stepped in with The Dead, but I truly believe he gets how Jerry felt about the music and each show. Jerry once said, “ we’re all professionals at this point so each we can always play the music. But some nights you know and the fans know something very special is happening “
So inspiring now that they have completed a historic run at Sphere! I was there in June and my jaw is still dropped to the floor. Now every time I hear Grateful Dead, I have to remind myself that's Jerry Garcia and not John Mayer!
I was in Navy boot camp in Illinois when Jerry Died. I didn't know it until I got a Sunday Rocky Mountain News a few weeks later when my mom sent it. There were like 12 kids from Colorado around my bunk passing around the paper. We were blown away. I saw them @ McNichol's in Denver in the early 90's.
Kuddos JM, your playing at Bonnaroo was way more relaxed and in the moment than any other shows you've played IMHO. Working on relaxing your vocals is the next part of your journey, but I'm only 1 in ten thousand no hate intended at all, best wishes and happy trails :)

It's kinda funny how John is trying to put this into words. Music is basically automatic. You can't get jammed up with overthinking it. It's a lifeform and life force of its own and it a continual stream. Everyone involved has to go with the flow and take flight. It's a magical thing.
“Endless & Bountiful” Love 🌹🩵🌻 Thank you 🎶
Don't worry Johnny we love you for stepping up to bring us the Dead Live.
Saw the Saturday show at Wrigley 7/1, 2017. They have reached that next plateau. With Oteil and Jeff, they are ready for another leveling up.
It goes away internally & externally .. i can feel that.. think on ur feet to keep it fresh.. MAYER YOU CAN DEFINITELY HOLD UR OWN. THANK YOU.. HOPE TO SEE U N DALLAS IN AUGUST.. 2017.
🌸🌸SHAKA-LIFE🌸🌸
I just love the way John expresses himself!
This interview is a Master Class.
💃🏻 Thank you for taking me to this place… 🎹🕺🏻🎸🎶
"thank you for taking me there"
Music!
well- just finished up summer tour 2017 & my mind was blown. over & over & over
After hearing Dead & Company at the LOCKN' Festival, I believe they have reached this new plateau they are discussing.
We are in a world of me me me me want want want , it's all upside down
I implore you to watch Kendrick Lamar's interview with Rick Rubin.
I think? Lol
But God bless this gig the Dead and Company. And bless this new John and Bobby show. Lol 🤗
Thats honestly mainly just racist. Kendrick, J Cole, Jonwayne, Tyler the creator, Frank Ocean, Anderson Paak. All smart rappers that are under 30 years old. All genuine musicians
Frederic Flintstone it wasn't racist at all. race was never mentioned in his comment. in fact, take a look at the majority of 'pop' singers and you will realize most are white females. not everything is racist, you know. ;)
hahaha, like the good 'ol days of confounding conundrumming of trying to explain what is unexplainable...
There's a new MAYOR of deadtown!!
Johns doin it...he has the passion and skill..to embrace Jerry's style to make it fresh
Great interview guys! Really enjoyed this,
Thank You Bobby and John!
Just saw the final show in Boulder last night. 7/3/23 Sooo good. Almost rained out but what a brilliant 2nd set. Will genuiely miss it. ❤💀🥀❤
Happy Birthday to Bobby & John! 🎂
John mayor is a G, that venue the dead and company had in boulder 2 days ago was absolutely life changing!
I hope people understand this, how important this is that they're talking about, for without that there can never be any good, just a bunch of crap that everyone else has already done, and Who wants to listen to that
Dead & Company hope you will be here for some time
I really wish they would do an interview like this again after all the years playing together now.
Phil Lesh & Friends already figured this out. Lesh modernized Dead songs and his shows were phenomenal, but I absolutely support Dead & Company in their journey.
Is there anyone else out there who liked Bob Weir's album Blue Mountain so much that they wish he would make another one?
Yes thank you for taking me Back there
John is a pretty cool dude. And he crushes it in Dead and Co.
The key to life, there's a balance to everything in life. Gracias.
Congratulations Grateful Dead on your
2024 Kennedy Center Award
... see you at the presentation Award show
both amazing bob and john
Summer Tour 2019
That next plateau they were envisioning this day
I see them together all the time now on tour!
John, you've gotten much more fluid over the past several years and that's what's important. All the embellishments are gravy, but to get to the next level it's time to not be afraid to start taking some risks!
Loved you from the beginning of the fildhouse always remember the music never stop s
There is Nothing “like”a Grateful Dead Concert!!!!!
Cumberland Blues live on July 10, 2022 was unbelievable.
Great tour so far!!! Love it.
Dead and Co are master musicians was something to prove. Relevant hip cool
Kuddos JM, your playing at Bonnaroo was way more relaxed and in the moment than any other shows you've played IMHO. Working on relaxing your vocals is the next part of your journey, but I'm only 1 in ten thousand no hate intended at all, best wishes
and happy trails :)
If you get confused, listen to the music play😊
Grateful it goes on!
The grateful dead family is always evolving. Yes jerry is gone. No John is not trying to replace him. Mayer is simply the next chapter in the story of the dead.
Bob and John can celebrate their birthdays together
I was there in the future 9/18/21….Mayer slays
