Meh, we see the inspection, okay, but what actions COULD have been taken in the winter under these conditions?

Do you go into the brood box in the middle of winter?

I like your idea of having the bee farm mobile on trailers.

Next time leave entrance closed off until through. When bottom entrance is opened it is like a fie place venting warm air. Clean after inspection in cold weather, nice set up for bees.

Excellent vid! Amazing only losing one hive over the winter. Bees have it so easy here in California.

its why we have no africanized bees near 48 degrees north latitude. I would assume if a very minor genetic influence from africa, would mean winter death for many years, until a colony finally made it. I am happy I can tend my bees in my tee shirt, with no screen, or bee suit. I love my bees. I give them fondant in the fall, and oxalic acid in the fall, so they can winter without parasites.

I really like the idea of the microphone for remote inspections. I don't lift the inner covers on my hives in the winter because the bees can not reseal them with propolis, but I do "peek" through the feeder hole.

It seems counter intuitive but we actually like the added bit of ventilation that lifting the lid in winter creates. We started losing fewer colonies to moisture when we started 'over-ventilating' our hives.
      Thanks for the comments!

These hives are located on Stony Creek Farm in Walton, NY. We're heading there now to check the honey supers!

Obviously your bees at this time were in good shape despite the efects of nosema being present, however, your hives sitting open to the blast of wind from all directions might do better with a bit of shelter. Opening a hive box in below freezing temperatures gains you what? Thanks for the demo and good luck hereafter.

I know this video is nine years old yet I must wonder how on earth do these bees survive without a wind break and other winterizing and on top of a hill ? What state are you in ? Here in Virginia I have to provide wind breaks and use moisture boxes and wrap them with waxed black cardboard. Since I started winterizing this way I have a very minimal loss .

If you keep a sharp eye out in the winter you can sometimes find abandoned hives. I have even found groups of 10-50 hives with bees and honey inside. Call out to see if the bees have an owner, and if you find them to be abandoned you can take them to a safer location and deploy them near fields of flowers or farms in the spring.

    • @Damienggj
      @Damienggj 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Call out to see if they have an owner? People often keep hives from great distances. Bees in winter get left alone. Some beekeepers came back to check on their hives and found them gone

Good vid How cold does it get there where your bees are at? It gets -25 to -35 here. Do you think my bees would survive. I am just learning first before I attempt to raise bees/honey. Has anyone that you are aware of-winterized bees in a top bar hive? Please respond back anyone. My husband wants his hive to be a top bar-but don't know if they can be winterized in that type of hive. Thank you Ginny

Of course they winterize, even better than the regular hives. The worst issue I ever had with regular hives was moisture, it killed one family and a mouse moved in, a mess. With the top bar hives I designed and built I never had moisture problem. The only problem I had was that my stupid busy job did not allow me to feed them for one week only and they died in April (the need for feeding came from my mistake, a "friend" dumped three queens on me in September and I felt sorry for them and I gave them workers and comb from my strong two hives and this way I weakened all of them). I have one left with only bees, no queen, still going strong. We learn...
Yes, they winterize just fine in top bar hive. I live in Michigan, middle Michigan. So we get cold temps.

Awesome, that's great info to know. I live in SD where the winds are the problem. Snow doesn't insulate hives here. So people would have to insulate the hives.

+Sansa Stark Anchor beehives really well. I had mine toppled over by high winds. it's been a learning experience and veteran beekeepers say it's a continuos learning.

they already have that built in,its so beekeeper can see into the box in winter without opening the top, this lets out all the stored bee heat, hives are always kept by bees at 96 or so,,at all times,so if you oprn to check bees, all their heat escapes and more energy is used to supply bees with the energy to fan temps back to 96..so in turn...MORE HONEY IS EATEN by bees.....and larva can die quickly from cold winds....so there..lol

Thank you for your time: I am an organic small time beekeeper. I bought the one acer just for beekeeping. Organic honey for the local food bank. someone took 50 hives and my fence/gate/ Bee sign? I had problems with border crossers but never just take it all? So many years of fighting ants, mouths, humans!
I have one hive at my home. I give up! The USDA just sent out the honey survey?
