I took my (then) middle school son to see The Rolling Stones in the late 90s - Lenny Kravitz was the opening act. He stomped a new mud hole in Spartan Stadium, in East Lansing, MI! This album from Kravitz was at its peak in sales and radio play. It was a great evening, one my son, now age 37, and I still talk about. Since you asked :) check out his FUNKY cover (live if possible) of “American Woman,” originally by The Guess Who, a fabulous band from Canada.
Well Biz, you weren't too far off, I believe this was his 2nd album 1993 ! Seen Lenny , 4 or 5 times ( substances can make you forget whole concerts some times LOL),, He's definitely a rocker ! And 100% a throwback to the 60s/70s ,,with a "swag" level that most can't reach ! He and Slash went to the same high school, but only kinda knew of each other back then, but became great friends down the road ! Actually one of my all time favorite songs is a song written by Slash and Lenny and a gallon of vodka ( true story lol) ,, Song is Always on the Run ! Biz, you would totally dig it, it's a funk/rock song ! Slash had a lot of the music down , but the drummer from guns and roses was having some substance problems, and couldn't get the drumming right ! So Slash brought it to Lenny to finish and instead of a GNR song, it became a Lenny song ( and Lenny also played the drums on the track) !
Both of Lisa Bonet's ex-husbands are fine & talented as hell. And the best part is that even though neither of their relationships worked out with her, the 2 of them are like BFFs. Seriously, her exes are super cool w/ each other & she's still cool w/ both of them. That woman needs to write a book on relationships (or at least how to end them right if it comes to that anyway).
Lenny Kravitz dropped "Are You Gonna Go My Way" in 1993. As a hit, it's sound was a slight departure from the soulful sound of his hit ballad "It Ain't Over Til It's Over" from 1991, but more in line, retro-sixties vibe-wise, with his 1989 debut single "Let Love Rule". The extent to which "Are You Gonna Go My Way" sounds late nineties attests to his influence over that decade. Lenny Kravitz was married to Lisa Bonet for five years back in the eighties. She played the "wild" middle child on The Cosby Show and helped Kravitz write some songs and such along the way before he became a rock star and they got divorced. For a taste of his sound back then, also check out the Velvet Underground flavored "Mr. Cab Driver" from 1989 -- a groovy kiss off to racist New York City cabbies. Another tune that dropped in 1993 with a similar funky psychedelic hard rock sound is "Afro" by Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. 1993 was a great year for rap, rock, and alt-rock music, although that year seems like such a blur to me now. Looking over a list of album releases --- Björk - Debut, Cypress Hill - Black Sunday, Sheryl Crow - Tuesday Night Music Club, Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), Queen Latifah - Black Reign, Snoop Doggy Dogg - Doggystyle, Cracker - Kerosene Ha, The Breeders - Last Splash, Nirvana - In Utero, Digable Planets - Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space), Salt-N-Pepa - Very Necessary, Stereolab - Space Age Bachelor Pad Music, U2 - Zooropa, Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Sting - Ten Summoner's Tales, The Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream, ...
You should do “Sister” by Lenny. One of my first big concerts as a teenager was seeing Lenny Kravitz and Blind Melon together right before the lead singer of Blind Melon died.
Cindy blackman on the drums and yeah she's legit his drummer at the time. I seen lenny 92,96. Lenny is totally up there with the legends 🙌 . "Rock and roll is dead" by lenny kravitz is a great video aswell. I'm huge fan since I was 12 and I'm now 40 lol so big up the kravitz
I can't think of the drummers name but I saw her live with Carlos Santana who she is now married to. She is s great drummer, and this song rocks. I remenber learning the main riff on guitar years ago, and now I can play the whole song🔥🔥
On Lenny's first 4 albums he recorded analog and used vintage equipment so it had a built-in old-school feel. "Always On The Run" (banger) or "It's Ain't Over 'til It's Over" (laid-back) from the Mama Said album would be sweet.
Biz, one day you should check out his entire first album called Let Love Rule even if it’s just on your own. You’d like it. He played all the instruments on it.
Fly Away should be your next Lenny Kravitz song. Then Always on the Run..he and Slash from Guns n Roses wrote/performed it. They went to high school together
I don’t know if you remember the tv show The Jefferson’s. Their neighbors were the Willis’s. The women that portrayed Helen is Lenny’s mother. And his ex wife was Lisa Bonet who played Denise Huxstable the oldest sibling.
As far where does Lenny stand in the list of all the greats, Lenny is the most successful black singer with a hit black rock song. But, Lenny has recorded a lot of masterpieces in different styles just like Prince. As far as black artists Lenny is easily in the top 15 of the most successful black artists of all-time. He just stays under the radar most of the time.
I'll give you a couple of suggestions. 1. Fly Away 2. American Women 3. Dig In 4. All along the Watchtower, featuring: Eric Clapton 5. When Doves Cry, tribute to Prince These songs are really worth your reaction time. You'll be rocking in your chair, just like you are right now. Promise! 😎☮️
Could also be Alvin Lee inspired. Riff reminds me of "Bad Scene", just like I am getting "Let Love Rule Vibes" when I hear some of the organ chords of "If you should love me".
My, it's getting hot in here! Lol He's so sexy (still is!) Indeed that girl is playing the drums. Pre-tech era she interviewed to play drums for him over the phone-and was hired! During concerts she banged on the drums so hard she had someone standing behind her to hold her shirt together when she would break it lol. We named our daughter after his song Rosemary💕 Lenny is truly special, thanks for this reaction. Let Love Rule and Sitting on top of the World are amazing also.
I think every dude in the 90s was jealous of Lenny. I feel like he probably didn't have any issues scoring nightly. I always liked most of his hits but he just fell off at some point.
His mother is Roxy Roker who played Helen Willis on the sitcom The Jeffersons. R.I.P Roxy Roker
The drummer is Cindy Blackman Santana. She's married to Carlos Santana
Coolest fucking thing I’ve heard in a long time
I saw her and Carlos live and she is a fantastic drummer 🔥🔥
I was in HS when this came out, and I thought she was the coolest.
Lenny's first few albums are all classics. Top tier Rock from the late 80s and 90s.
🎸💯 Lenny Kravitz is a badass rocker‼🤯
He's also some VERY COOL eye candy‼🔥
Thank you for this BizMatik‼☮ ❤ 🎶
He's freaking legendary.
Lenny definitely had swag, and his sound was straight-up, which gave it that throwback feel, with a more modern edge and crunch. 🤘😎
So glad you got to Lenny. "Fly Away" and his cover of "American Woman" are fire also.
Fly Away🤘Absolutely 💯 Agree
My Favorite Song by Lenny
Great Reaction 👍
This song is biblical.
His mother wanted him to write a song about Jesus.
So he did
and it's a banger!
That Bass riff though,,, Banger for Sure...
Love Lenny, and yes , very nice to look at❤️🤩

Lenny's Drummer is fire. And one of the only female drummers.
Great tune. Stand by my Woman is another one by Lenny that you would like

Love Lenny Kravitz! One of my favs.
Always loved this song! WE LIT! Lol. Thank you, Biz.❤

Loved Lenny. His own experiences and life really gave his own unique sound. He was super cool too
Lenny is everything. He was great friends with Prince…check out him and Prince doing American Woman.💜☔️

She BARELY hits the bass drum on the breaks!!! Its CRAZY!!!

This was released in 1993. From Lenny Kravitz, check out Fly Away and his cover of the classic Guess Who song American Woman.
He was Katniss' dress maker in the movie The Hunger Games. His character's name was Cinna.
One of my faves!
Love this song. He has some great music.
Almost forgot Biz, the lady drumming on the first few albums for Lemmy, now drums for Santana and is Carlos Santana's wife.
On Lenny's first 4 albums he recorded analog and used vintage equipment so it had a built-in old-school feel.
"Always On The Run" (banger) or "It's Ain't Over 'til It's Over" (laid-back) from the Mama Said album would be sweet.
He rocks!!!

You come through ! Is a song Lenny Kravitz recorded with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers . Totally Rockin' !

I've always thought that Lenny Kravitz is Terminally Cool! ❤️✌️😆
Always loved that tune. I see someone already said Fly Away, and his cover of American Woman.
Biz, you've been sleepin on Lenny. 😊Such a talented all around musician!!
✌❤ Check out his version of American Woman!! 🔥
Fly Away should be your next Lenny Kravitz song. Then Always on the Run..he and Slash from Guns n Roses wrote/performed it. They went to high school together
Hey Biz. Also check out the live version of this song done on the Howard Stern Show.
The whole song is one fire hook
Who cares where somrone would rate him. It sounds great and that's all I care about.
He's great, he totally reminds me of Jimi!!!👌👌👍👍✌✌😁😁
I don’t know if you remember the tv show The Jefferson’s. Their neighbors were the Willis’s. The women that portrayed Helen is Lenny’s mother. And his ex wife was Lisa Bonet who played Denise Huxstable the oldest sibling.
..on The Cosby Show!..
American Woman (cover, originally done by The Guess Who) and Fly Away are my recommendations.

Jimi Hendrix inspired riff?! Lol. Hell Yes! Say no more. Thanks Biz!
Could also be Alvin Lee inspired. Riff reminds me of "Bad Scene", just like I am getting "Let Love Rule Vibes" when I hear some of the organ chords of "If you should love me".
"Black Girl' is a good one about his wife at the time.
I seem to recall him playing this on SNL and the bass player was John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin. That's one way to instant credibility, eh?
and JPJ owned that stage ...
Yes he was in the Hunger Games 😊
Nope early 90s bro!!! Lenny is amazing
Cindy can sure swat hard! 🤘
Faith Cat was correct- an analogy of Jesus’s life. I was born long ago….Are you gonna go my way? Intense video
Mama Said is the better album in my opinion. Let Love Rule was great too.
My, it's getting hot in here! Lol He's so sexy (still is!)

Lennys mom was actress roxie roker. Cindy blackman santana carlos satana wife is on srums
Lenny is a world class Rock star, like a old school Rock Star, now he ain`t one of my guitar Goat, but he is lit.
Try: American Women.
This video and song are from 1993. The drummer looks like rapper Ice Spice.
I think every dude in the 90s was jealous of Lenny. I feel like he probably didn't have any issues scoring nightly. I always liked most of his hits but he just fell off at some point.
Hey please do some Burton Cummings Your Backyard.
☮️💜
Sounds like Jimmy Hendrix
☮️💙💙💙🔥
Lisa Bonet was his wife
Female drummer.
The drummer is Carlos Santana's wife - Cindy Blackman Santana
I am not at all a super fan. That being said, I kinda think of him being in a class of his own. If that makes sense. ❤️✌️
It's 1993.
His only good song
1993
Lenny with dreads is ALWAYS a better Lenny!!! 😎💯 His music kinda sucked after ...
Go to the dictionary and look up the word " Funky " All you'll see there is Lenny's pitcher.
What beer, he seems like a Stella Artois type of guy.
