You have a very respectable tremolo picking technique - I've seen maybe 2 guys that can duplicate Eddie's technique which I think you could as well if you so chose to. Either choice is cool as we are individuals yes?

I was butt hurt because my mom wouldn’t let me see the 1984 tour with Diamond Dave because I was too young. So I went to the 5150 tour just so I could see EVH in the flesh, and not expecting much from Sammy, but it was a hell of a show. They killed it.

I was a big fan of Sammy solo and of Dave VH. When I heard Dave and Eddie were having issues, I told my friends I thought itd be so cool if Sammy became singer for VH. Well it happened and it was NOT what I expected, nor as good as I thought it would be, but I gotta say, I got to see them live in 86, and it was a phenomenal show! Sammy is crazy onstage (and up in the rigging)!
Eddie was a big fan of Sammy’s work, especially with Montrose, and was quite complimentary of his guitar work. Obv he was a much better guitarist, as far as being adventurous and innovative, but Sammy’s no slouch!

You have to keep in mind that even though EVH was the Maestro, he was greatly influenced by Montrose and often mentioned his love for them in his interviews. Sammy was held in high respect by EVH because of Montrose. These two were great because of mutual love/respect.

I wanted to hate van hagar, I really did, but they made some great music. Sammy is a great guitarist and brought a lot of his own style, raw, but polished. I didn't think it would work, how do you put two talents like that together and make it work, but they did. And by the way, damn you can play.

People blame Hager for the tonal changes in Van Halen. It was Eddie who wanted a more modern synth pop sound. He wanted to change the style and since hes an amazing musician he was entitled to do what he wanted. Thats why Dave left, he loves that classic rock n roll sound.

Sammy playing the guitar himself and taking a solo every now and then only added to the diversity within the band. Because he played guitar, he definitely knew what he was talking about as far as the music was concerned. Knowing how to play helped the band write better songs. It was a win for everybody!

Someone’s on crack! While I’m a huge fan of both Van Halen eras, they were a better band with Sammy Hagar and the numbers prove it! Better composition and structure! They were tight with Sammy, not so much with Dave! Saw both versions live and both were great! But Dave would forget what he was supposed to sing, or didn’t sing at all when he should’ve! Sammy didn’t make those kinds of mistakes! Plus Sammy was a way better singer and it’s not even close! Dave was the better front man and it’s not even close!

The difference is that Ed can say it in like 10 different languages." I also remember getting to go backstage and meet the band on their 1993 tour. Live Without A Net was a game-changer, by the Kings of Game Changing. Just awesome. I wore out more than one VHS tape of it. And still watch the DVD. Incredible show, and energy. Hagar was awesome, and the immediate chemistry with Edward was just crazy. Those 2 were meant to rock the World together. And they did. Hagar was so fun to watch play guitar. No Edward, for sure. But no one was, or ever will be. He's in a class all by himself. But Hagar was so good. Subtle and bluesy, and he complemented Edward so well. Man. What a Band. There will NEVER be another Van Halen. Nor will there ever be another Edward Van Halen. Period.

Most times I think, 'OK, enough, play the next song now...' but this is actually one of my favorite jams ever, as they keep at it for quite a while. Also, Eddie has a killer tone/crunch going as he's playing rhythm guitar to Sammy's solo near the end of this song. Last thing, although I can't begin to play as well as you do, your musical taste between KISS, Metallica and Alice in Chains is identical to mine. Cool looking axe! Would look even cooler without inlays. All black! I grew up playing Kirk Hammett solos, too! Love that guy! Van Halen with David Lee Roth is best. Killer video! 🤘🏻

A buddy brought his Live Without A Net VHS over to my house when it came out. I remember being really impressed with Sammy's solos. I knew he could play, but not like that. Of course Eddie blew me away through the entire concert. lol

Roth or Hagar it's still Van Halen to me. Absolutely love the Live Without A Net concert, I remember watching all the time when I was little being absolutely blown away and memorized by the whole band, and Eddie's solo section of the concert was just 🤌🤌🤌🤌😍😍😍😍

I had a DVD of a bunch of Van Hagar shows from the 5150-Unlawful Carnal Knowledge era and it definitely showed me just how cool of a guitarist Sammy was, like the dude could shred alongside EVH

I saw Van Halen at the US Festival in 83, the 1984 tour and then this tour, 5150. It was the first time I had ever seen EVH play head to head with another guitar player live and it simply blew me away. RIP EVH. I miss you every day!

I always thought Sammy should’ve played guitar more often in their live shows than he did. I think it sounded great when he played guitar when Ed was playing keyboards.

“Keep up” is a great way to characterize what is one of the greatest live performances ever. Hagar is 40 when he belts out that incredible scream and I totally agree about how raw and powerful it is to set up the dueling solos. Great breakdown!

I have seen Sammy live many times solo and with VH and he is no slacker on guitar. The guy can keep up to most great players. I can't pick his playing out of a crowd of great players, but it is rock solid playing.

I am 40 years in to my love affair with the guitar and this channel represents the highest form of the youtube format. I always enjoy your videos and your commitment to your audience is worthy of praise. I saw you being really supportive of "Craigs News" a couple of times and generosity of spirit and with money is a rare trait. The more we give away the more we get.

One of my first concerts included Sammy Hagar as the warmup for Boston, the headlining band. Sammy did the dueling guitar thing with his main guitar player, Gary Pihl, where Sammy announced before they squared off “Sometimes I kick his ass, sometime he kicks mine”. It was solid! Gary was with Sammy for quite a while, eventually moving on to play with Boston. Gary Pihl, under-recognized guitar player.

I have that video, and love that live version of OWTR. The tempo was right on, and the solos were great. What Sammy & Eddie were doing in the solo section was called "trading fours". Each would take a four bar solo then the other guy would take his four bars.
As far as the tuning, Ed was soloing over Db and Sam soloed over F#, assuming they were in standard tuning.

I couldn't begin to guess how many times I've watched this concert. I'd say the most emotional one was the day EVH died, and someone was live streaming it, and there were over 100K of us watching it and just commenting about what a God the man had been. Great video, as always.

I saw this tour. It was great. I liked Sammy before he joined VH so it was a must see show for me. I can't drive 55 was my favorite part of the show. I don't remember if it's on the video or not with Sammy on a catwalk way up over the audience.
