I LOVED it. People saying that they hated it or the ending ruined it because we didn’t get all the answers. I think I the minority that I actually like how we know so little. Millie acting was amazing thoughout and kept the tension high throughout the episode. Very close to 10 for me imho.

Thanks for the review as always, Phil & Rowan! There was a really good atmosphere set up, had to remind myself it wasn't a Mark Gattis! Had some elements of Demon '79 from the latest series of Black Mirror. I loved the circularity too. I wonder if more will be made of it as the series goes on? I think the Doctor stepping on the fairy circle was a subtle call-back to Millie stepping on the butterfly in Space Babies. And I liked the subtlety of the changes the second time round - Ruby was in Wales three times. Things like the small cameo from Mrs Flood - "this is nothing to do with me" - makes me feel that RTD is setting stuff up. And I don't think he'll abandon the Albion party! Overall, I really enjoyed this episode, Millie did a fantastic job!

I didnt perciece the political plot as a red herring. My take is that he actually WAS mad jack. From all I can understand, mad jack is a god that came into the world in 1925 when the doctor cast the salt in wild blue yonder. He was delt with and bound by a spell when he first wrecked havok on earth, but then the doctor broke the spell and he came into new form as a baby in whales, where he grew up and eventually did that whole campain.

I liked it a lot, two fantastic episodes in a row, although this one did tail off towards the end as how they were going to resolve it became predictable. If I had one main disappointment it's that I wish they'd stayed in Wales and Ruby hadn't gone home. The I thought this in every episode, it’s clear Covid restrictions were designed into the script, wide open areas or small cast, like in boom , space babies, using Babies as they were less transmissible, in the pub everyone was socially distant, a lot of outdoor scenes on the football pitch, outdoors or big halls in Devils Chord etc.
I hope those who criticise take this into account, I managed a pub/ restaurant after Covid and the restrictions were crazy and difficult to work around, cant imagine a production like this.

She first said she'd been to Wales 3 times before (vs the twice before that she said at the beginning of the episode) but then couldn't recall hey third trip. I'm wondering whether the plot will make a bit more sense in retrospect, if some of the theories about where this series is going, and why it's got stronger fantasy elements, are proven correct. Kate's line about increasingly investigating the supernatural suggests to me that there might be more pay off yet to come for this episode.

It also felt a bit underwhelming too, but I think thats because I thought something bad happened to the Tardis and it heavily tied into the finale. Mainly because thats what I put in my latest 'all trailer clips in order' video. But I thought it was a good concept for an episode overall. However I think there was too much left unexplained, for example: What did old creepy Ruby say to make everyone run away? Why didn’t a paradox happen? If all of this never happened, then doesn’t the 2046 PM start a nuclear war anyway? If the Doctor was swapped with the 2046 PM, then how did the Doctor know about them? Did he ever really write satisfactory endings in his first run? Maybe a couple here or there, but over all the plot was usually solved with the Doctor flipping a few buttons or a deus ex machina. 3/4 of his finales end with someone getting god powers and saving the day. He is usually much better at creating a good thematic ending that makes sense for the characters like in this episode.

One plot point with Kate i didn't understand why they bought it up was about going on a plane or a boat. And she says about "she (Ruby) might die or the woman might die" however in the going home sequence we saw the lady just follows along the side... it feels like that inclusion raised more questions then if they just said "shes always 73 yards away" we saw what happens in the train sequence. I liked it but i didn't love it. At this moment in time i feel like it needed to be a Two Parter. Maybe part one wrapping up where we meet Rodger. But if questions get answered further into the series my opinion could change.

I honestly don't even get why RTD ever thought it was his best ever. It feels like he tried to make an episode that's a mix of Midnight and Turn Left, which are his best two DW episodes imo, so maybe that's why he figured this would be a similar success?
The issue is that it only created a story that's trying to do way too much and not explaining nearly enough.. It was like a more nonsensical version of Turn Left. Which, I mean, I love Turn Left, but part of what made it so great is that we've already seen how things were supposed to go in the first place, making it easier to grasp what went wrong in the alternate timeline and what Donna had to do in order to fix it. In 73 Yards, not only was the thing initiating the alternate timeline in the first place was basically "magic"; but, we also don't really get any explanation of what's actually supposed to happen. It just leaves us having to guess too much, which is a problem RTD's resolutions often have sadly.
Also, despite the fact that this episode had a very similar ending to Turn Left (the timeline gets corrected and the companion who has led the episode forgets about everything that happened) - Turn Left made a point of still making an impact, both on the season long arc (Donna tells the Doctor about Rose before she forgets completely), and emotionally. It was a very impactful story about the importance of the Doctor, showing us the bleak reality if he was to die and emphasising how much the universe needs him; as well as the importance of the companion, whose presence in this case was the difference between the Doctor living and dying. However, in 73 Yards, it seems like Ruby just forgets, the Doctor doesn't believe her, and unless I missed something, nothing actually changes with the current time line. It made it so that even if you weren't one of the people who found it very confusing, the entire episode still also felt a bit pointless.
I understand the value of leaving things up for interpretation, or keeping it vague to keep the mystery alive. That's what the Midnight monster was, and it worked as a great example of how not knowing can make it more creepy - But there, it felt okay since we didn't actually NEED to know the specifics in order to follow and understand the story. All we needed to know was that the monster was an unknown even to the Doctor, and the general mechanics of it taking the Doctor's voice. However, this isn't the case here. As soon as the twist made Ruby The Woman, it was no longer a mysterious monster, but our main character herself. There was a need for further explanation imo.. Especially when the entire episode hinges around this mystery (it's even titled 73 Yards), AND everything that happens in it technically gets undone in the end anyway.
Millie did amazing in carrying the episode, and I did love the vibe and setting overall. I even liked the twist of Ruby being The Woman - I just wish there was a better explanation for how she went about "fixing" the timeline, what actually happened after she did, and why people ran away from her older-self in the first place. I mean, it's exactly like you've said - if Ruby was the one to stop Roger ap Gwilliam, what happens in the restored timeline where she doesn't? I could accept that maybe stepping on the shrine was the thing that made him become Prime Minister in the first place (releasing "Mad Jack"), but then, the Doctor was talking about him almost causing Nuclear war BEFORE ever stepping on the shrine, and repeated his anecdote about him in the end even after Ruby "fixed" the timeline. Is it just because he's the Doctor and could somehow sense the aborted timeline? Or does Gwilliam rise to power regardless and the difference is he's stopped some other way (which would mean, Ruby really didn't need to do anything about it)? There were just too many loose ends and not enough explanations.
Even Turn Left had a scene at the end where the Doctor and Donna talk about what happened, to make it extra clear to the audience what actually went on (despite it being much clearer to begin with), and I think this episode could have really used a scene like that as well. Instead, we get the Doctor mocking Ruby for seeing the woman, which honestly made no sense and made the entire thing even more confusing imo. Not only because he's seen much weirder stuff over the years, but also because, if he could sense the aborted timeline, why wouldn't he believe her?
I honestly felt like it was a pretty clunky script, at least resolution-wise. Unlike the well-thought out writing of Turn Left, we never got any explanation of how older-Ruby went back in time to become The Woman in the first place, or how and why she was able to not age, and teleport/keep exactly 73 yards away. We also get no explanation of why the TARDIS wouldn't let her back in, or what caused the Doctor to disappear in the first place. Also, what could she possibly say to cause so many people to run away from her? I can MAYBE buy UNIT stepping back once they realise she's older Ruby, cause they don't want to mess with the timeline.. But, what made her own Mum run and turn on her? How did she possibly cause Gwilliam to quit, or get perfect strangers to run away screaming? If it wasn't supposed to be her at that point in time, or was the result of some sort of hex empowering/affecting her, then yeah, I'm sorry but I did feel like that should have been better explained. We get a sort-of explanation about it in the start with the people in the pub, but then even that gets immediately thrown out the window when we realise they're just teasing Ruby and don't actually mean what they're saying. I honestly think keeping The Woman a mystery would have worked MUCH better without the half-baked twist of her being older Ruby the entire time.. Or vice versa, if they stuck to the twist, but set it up to make more sense from the start (i.e. remove her superhuman powers, take the time to explain the logic behind the hex, or at least verify that it's what caused her to get said powers and have the repealing influence on others).
Overall, while watching I thought this episode was a solid 8.5 or even 9/10, but the ending and all the unanswered questions, lowered it to a 6.5 imo. Which is a shame, cause it really was great visually and acting-wise, and I really did want to like it. I think Boom was MUCH better, and honestly, I even liked the Devil's Chord much more than I did 73 Yards. It is far from RTD's best script ever.

A very thorough review with some good points. Particularly about it trying to do too much. I think given a longer run time or a two-part epiosde it could have made all those elements work without some feeling like they needed more time like they did.

I think there is no definite answer. As Kate said: "We see something inexplicable and invent the rules to make it work." They gave us enough to work with so we can make our own theories. It is all to demonstrate how through history, people come up with their own explanations for unexplained phenomena (myths, folklore, legends, religion).
But, since Kate said we try to make sense of it, my theory is:
The myth is the Spiteful One walks through the gaps and rules with fear. The circle was broken and created a gap and creating the event Kate mentions. The Spiteful One actually became real, stepped through the gap and he is preying on Ruby's fears. When her foster mother ran, Ruby said, "Don't do this to me." Not, "don't hurt my mom." Her foster mother said "even your real mother didn't want you." Ruby is afraid everyone she becomes close to or asks for help will abandon her like her mother did. As a result, she was alone her entire life. She can't see her spirit, because of the limit of her vision (73 yards), which deteriorates as she ages. That's why the spirit is closer in the hospital when she sees her without her glasses. When she died, her spirit went back and prevented the Doctor from breaking the circle, ending the "event."
The fairy circle was created to trap Mad Jack. Not sure when in the time line or by whom. It would have to be after the Doctor saw him become PM. So, presumably by someone with foresight or a time traveler. (In a bootstrap paradox it would have been Ruby, but we don't see her do that.) The Doctor inadvertently released him and he became Prime Minister, as the Doctor had expected.Ruby used the spoiler and the spirit to stop him. That is the only real inconsistency, as his running away was not a fear of hers. So she managed to weaponize her spirit self. Her fear of the spirit had subsided and she no longer made it snow. And in the end Mad Jack's soul is back in the fairy circle, I guess and there is no nuclear threat.

I feel like this episode lives or dies on how you feel about ambiguity. I absolutely love the ambiguity, I think explaining the mechanics of what Old Ruby said would have ruined it, because there is NOTHING that can make a mother abandon her child like that from one single line.
I loved the horror vibes, and as time went on and it became "learning to live with your demons" it just really worked for me.

I think it’s enjoyable, but it doesn’t make much sense when you stop to think about it.
Yes, it may be intentional that we don’t understand everything because oooooo spooky, but even the unnatural stories have some logic to them. But it doesn’t really provide that logic, stuff just kinda happens.
Like, why does old ruby travel back in time at the end? What’s the reason? Why did talking to old ruby make people hate her? Why would she do that to herself? Why did ruby cop so much punishment when the doctor was the one that broke the circle?
Why was there a cotton fairy circle on the cliff anyway? Why had the locals put it there? They were going to explain that, but ooops, that was just the patrons messing with her, so why did that happen?
So, if ruby never goes on to live the rest of her life on earth after all, what happens with prime minister mad jack? Who stops him from blowing up the world if ruby isn’t there after all?
And why, why, exactly, was the woman exactly 73 yards away? What was the significance of that?
I get the idea of being enigmatic. There is an appeal to stories where it’s not entirely clear what’s going on, but this is a bit too much, it makes it sound less like the story was cleverly written and more like “stuff just happens”.
It was tense, and a very creepy time. And surface level, it’s gripping stuff. But just stopping to think about it, it’s kind of annoying how little things are explained and just passed off with “it’s supernatural, just accept it”
Sorry, I don’t want to be mean, but I hope I made my point that it’s just a bit too much unexplained?

The problem with this episode was the many plot holes and the fact that a lot of the things about the episode didn’t really make sense. Why did the fairy circle make the dr disappear? We’re not told. What did the woman say to everyone to make them hate and be scared of Ruby? We’re not told. How did Ruby go back in time to warn her younger self without the TARDIS. We’re not told. Why did the TARDIS kind of die in this episode when the dr became human in series 3 and the TARDIS was fine and could still be entered by Martha? We’re not told. The episode was fine but the writing was inherently bad bc of the many plot holes and the fact that it really didn’t know where it was going.
Also, when we see ruby at 40, she disappeared look 40 rather she just looks like her 19 year old self with glasses on. That doesn’t make her look 40!!!! Even when she was supposedly 25, you could clearly see she was wearing a wig. The ending especially just didn’t make sense bc if the old woman was ruby, why didn’t she just go up to her younger self at the start and say not to brake the circle? I will give the whole always being 73 yards away so the woman’s face was also impossible to make out credit as that was genius. Also the fact that the events of the episode didn’t happen bc she changed time was just lazy and made the whole episode pointless.

I wanted it to be creepy, so I was disappointed when the people in the pub were just joking with her. Red herring there, multiple others, no real answers. It seemed like she was there to stop RaG, but in the end the whole thing never happened… so it was basically pointless in terms of plot, pointless in terms of character development as Ruby doesn’t remember… I think it could have been brilliant with a couple adjustments. Personally though, I was left disappointed. Too many unanswered questions (not saying I have problems with unanswered questions, just seemed like there were way too many here)… I wouldn’t say I felt confused at the end, we weren’t given enough information for confusion… I think Frustrated is the word I would use… this episode left me frustrated, which isn’t a good place to be halfway through the season.
