"He'd make an excellent 'Dracula.'" LOL! Peter Cushing was the KING of B Horror. He was the "Vampire" hunter. Christopher Lee, who will appear in the prequels, is your 'Dracula.'" One of the best all time.

There was no cgi st the time. Practical effects. You’re probably going to be watching the officially released cgi version released in 1997, then updated several times over the years. Please don’t let this dissuade you because remember Lucas had to create his award winning effects team from scratch. Industrial Light and Magic then went on to produce award winning effects for other films.

There was *ONE* CG sequence in the original 1977 version. The Death Star schematics during the "locker room" pep talk were legit vector graphics rendered at University of Illinois-Chicago's Electronic Visualization Laboratory.
There's been CG in movies since original Westworld (1971) but for the first decade or so it was only used to represent *in-universe* graphics, like computer readouts, targeting systems, robot-vision, etc. The first real CG VFX used to represent something that wasn't CG in the movie were the spaceships in "The Last Starfighter" (1984) and it looks pretty fake, like an old video game. (It still manages to look cool because of the design and the animation) Miniatures were still standard for spaceships well into the 90's.
"Tron" (1981) and the Genesis sequence in Star Trek 2 (1982) were pretty advanced, but that was still graphics-as-graphics, representing imagery that was generated by a computer in the movie

I'd rather see claymation than the best cgi there is!😂 Sadly as an old dude I'm allergic to it!😔 I remember being a little kid in '70's. We waited all week for Saturday morning cartoons. It was magical! Then I saw a show how they were made-one drawing at a time & it wrecked cartoons for me! All I could think about was the poor dude having to draw picture after picture... I've tried to watch Lord of the Rings so many times I got it on vhs!😂 I've tried at least a dozen times to force myself & havent made it beyond tavern!😔 I don't see wizards & demons. All I see are actors getting paid millions to act to nothing! Green-screens everywhere, and a bunch of kids punching computer keys! Now if the guy that did "Excalibur" did it old school, THAT would be some EPIC SHIT!!!🤣🤣🤣
Must be nice, friends, but I have a disability!😂

@@satyadasgumbyji8956 CGI is an invaluable resource and allows us to do incredible things we really couldn't dream of without it. With that said, not all CGI is top-notch (just like some practical effects are pretty bad), and not everything that's done with it is great. Obviously, there was an evolution to the process, and the early you go, the more limited the CGI is (and the more likely it looks terrible). We're getting to the point now where we can do some crazy things with it, but of course movie-makers are going to keep pushing to the edge of the capabilities of what they've got to work with, and so we're going to still end up with stuff that looks fake in a distinctly CGI way (and then there's just cheap trash like Birdemic). But I think it's foolish to wish it away, and it's not like practical effects don't have their limitations... they just have a different flavor to how they look fake. Just look at "The Thing", which had some amazingly creeping special effects, but most of it still doesn't look authentically real, and some of it is actually a bit clunky.
With all of that said, most of the CGI added in the special editions of Star Wars isn't up to par with the original practical effects, and it clashes with them stylistically anyway. So it sticks out and looks tacky. It also isn't how the movie originally looked, and when people nowadays watch the movie, like for reaction channels, they're approaching it as a '70s movie and often don't realize it was later mucked with. And that bothers me to no end. If you want to make inferior touch-ups available, I guess that's okay, but the original should be freely commercial available as a piece of history, if nothing else.
Honestly, if they had just touched up the special effects a bit (doing away with the green squares around spaceships, introducing a bit more movement to them in space battles and stuff like that), I think it'd be a different story. Then it'd be a bit more like remastering a music album to improve production as opposed to adding new instruments and shit. Mind you, I'd still want the original stuff to be available, but then it wouldn't be significantly changing anything. Cloud City is a more compelling scene when it actually has windows looking out into the clouds though.

@stuffy Hello, friend! I can see you're passionate about the subject & obviously know a lot more about it than I care to know😂, so I respect & APPRECIATE your insights!🙏 Here's a few of my own for ya: I remember in 1985, 6th grade, they introduced computer class for very 1st time. I also remember it took the entire period to just program in your name & address!😅 it was a nightmare. Then in college when i took required course, most, like myself, still didn't have home computers so had to spend time after school in campus computer lab. Another nightmare, so I quit computers after school in 1997. I finally said I'll give it another try in 2002. I paid $800 for a refurbished laptop. It took DAAAYS of said NIGHTMARE just to get the mofo running!😅 The the very 1st time I tried to do research, I hit the wrong button evidently, & spent the next hour talking to a guy in Bangladesh trying to get the gd computer to work again! By the time I went through all that, spent all that money, I LITERALLY could've walked to library, got what I needed & been home by the time I got off the phone & I was DONE!!! How the fuk is that progress, friend?!😅 I'll never get those hours back! And neither will y'all!😔 I didn't get one of these things y'all call a "phone" till FORCED to in '19! Didn't know wtf a TH-cam was until I looked up an author & saw little box with arrow & tapped. Blew my mind, to say the least! But since then, I've had to change "phone" plans, & BOTH times I had to get someone who knew computers/"phones" & STILL TOOK DAYS for them to set-up! How long have y'all had these things?! They can send message to Mars at click of a button, but 20 yrs later you can't just push a button after turn on new phone? Where's the progress with that???!!! Once again, I'll/we'll never get the hrs, days, months of said nightmare back!!! I'm a writer, maybe can't tell here😂, but have been a touring musician/performance artist for 3 decades. Best thing in the world would be to have a laptop, but I can't trust it & refuse to go thru hell of days of just getting it set-up ever again, let alone every time I buy a new product! I still use pen & paper, then I type it on a TYPEWRITER, THEN I put it on old laptop for copies! It's not even the learning I have a problem with, it's the gd BUFFERING!!! You know, in the 1950s a 5yro could wash clothes, dry them,, & turn on the tv & watch it while they did. I'll be 52 next month, AND I CAN'T DO ANY OF THAT TODAY!😂 I could go on, but will TRY & stfu!😂 Arthur C. Clark said he wrote "2001: A Space Odyssey" in the '60's because he said even every pocket calculator HAS ITS OWN ATTITUDE!👹🔥
      🤣🤣🤣
No, thank you! I'll type & bury my works in the ground, fuk a cloud! They'll be there long after "HAL" has destroyed everything else! With your computer knowledge, you do see what's about to happen with AI., don't you, friend? They're about to unleash the ultimate weapon against us. Nobody's gonna know what's real or not in media, a disaster will "happen" & government will say, we have to live in fukn Aldous Huxley "1984" for our own protection, & most of the public will embrace it whole-heartedly! Where do you think all these TRILLIONS of gov dollars have been disappearing to? Once the step is taken, WE'RE DONE!!!Unfortunately it's inevitable! It's about to hit, FOR SURE!!!😔

@@chrisleebowers Westworld was 1973 and featured the first use of pixelation (Yul Brynner's robot point of view), not CGI. The first use of CGI was in the memory-holed 1976 sequel Futureworld. Tron was 1982, and even if it and the Genesis scene in Star Trek II were intended to be in-movie graphic representations, I'd still say the only thing that matters is whether either actually worked convincingly in their own right or not.

Vader was NOT the only imperial to survive. The death star was basically a huge weapons platform and a terrifying addition to the imperial arsenal, but by no means was it their only warship. It was just the only one of that size and power level (ie: able to take out a whole planeet).
The empire has tens of thousands of large warships (and millions of smaller craft), and they are spread all across the galaxy controlling many thousands of star systems. So while this was a big victory for the rebel alliance, they are still a tiny force, underfunded, and hopelessly outgunned.

I still remember having waited in line for three hours to get tickets for three days later, even three weeks after the premiere in my country. And then the scrolling titles and the big spaceship slowly flying "above our heads" in the beginning. Watching this in row 10 (of 30) in a big cinema with 600+ seats was quite impressive and can't be felt when watching it now from dvd or on tv, even on an 80" screen at home. Having lots of cgi and stupid fastpaced action in newer movies simply can't replace interesting stories and carefully crafted and filmed contents of older movies or even old b/w classics, where i often even can't tell afterwards whether they were b/w or in color.

Remember seeing this when it was released back in 1977 it was only called Star Wars then it wasn't until the release of The Empire Strikes Back that it was changed to Episode IV A New Hope, and George started in the middle of the series as he felt that it was an easier story to tell given the limited technology at the time, C-3PO's character was originally going to be a con man with an american accent but George changed his mind when he heard Anthony Daniels the actor inside the costume started speaking the lines, the British actor who played Grand Moff Tarkin was portrayed by the late great actor Sir Peter Cushing who starred in a lot of horror movies back in the 50s to the early 70s for the British horror studio Hammer Films, he played a variety of characters but he is most famously known for portraying Baron Victor Frankenstien six times and Doctor Van Helsing five times,
Carrie Fisher was only 19 when they made this film and she said it was very difficult to act angry in front of Peter Cushing because he was such a kind generous and lovely man so she would think of someone she didn't like when doing the her scenes with him, she also said that he smelt of Lavender, Peter Cushing absolutely loved staring in Star Wars as he said it was a lot of fun, Sir Alec Guinness on the other hand didn't really want to play Obi Wan Kenobi he said the film was "fairy tale rubbish" but the films moral good and the studio offering to double his salary plus his wife said it would be good for him convinced him to play the role, also as the years went by he came to resent the fame the film series brought him and wished he would be remembered for his other work and not just for the Star Wars films.

    "...creatures, and CGI..."
Originally, there was no CGI in these movies (or, at least, not like we understand CGI today). It was almost entirely practical effects. However you'll be watching the versions released after 1997 where scenes and CGI was _added to_ the movies, as well as lots of other tweaks. Some are fine, some are _disastrously stupid._ Some of them were done _specifically_ to make them tie in with the Prequel Trilogy which came out in 1998. As a whole, it's unfortunate and broken. It's such a shame that you can't watch these movies as they originally were before they were tampered with. One of the _worst_ offenders in _this_ movie is the Cantina scene where Greedo, trying to take Han in for the reward... _shoots at Han!_ Sure, he misses (and in _some_ versions, Han _dodges_ the thing), but really... why would Greedo fire _at all?_ In the original... he didn't. And fans _of_ the original refer to this as 'Han Shot First'... because he did, and Greedo died, and that was the extent of the conflict between them.
"...you can't get any more information out of him..."
Yeah, Vader has some anger issues. On the other hand, he's a positive sea of tranquility compared to _other_ characters in later movies. It's _almost_ like later movies failed to understand how cold anger is so effective.
"...a lot of these characters aren't real people..."
Based on what? Consider everything you've seen of C-3PO in this movie... and tell me _other than_ being made of metal how he's not a 'real person', how a 'real person' would behave differently.
    "...it reminds me of WALL-E..."
Yep. Lots of people get that. We don't _know_ that WALL-E was based off of this stuff, but it seems rather plausible.
    "...that's a pretty gross creature..."
Horses are pretty gross creatures, too. :)
The one you saw walking was CGI added in 1997.
    "...oh he's so whiny..."
He's 19 (as far as the movie goes). Whiny teen? ... Yeah, that tracks.
"...like we all don't know who his father is..."
    In 1977 they didn't. Nor in 1978. :)
"...were the Sand People the little gremlins?..."
Little gremlins were "Jawas", Sand People are... well, you saw.
    "...why don't they serve droids..."
Because droids are the black people of 1870's USA.
"...I was not expecting it to be graphic..."
And George Lucas insists these movies are made for kids.
"...they kinda speak about them a little bit and then they immediately go into explaining who they are..."
That scene with Jabba was added in 1997. And it isn't needed for this movie, because Jabba doesn't _matter_ to this movie.
    "...funniest line ever..."
It's pretty up there. I _also_ like 'Wonderful girl! Either I'm gonna kill her or I'm beginning to like her!'
    "...she's so smart..."
Yeah, but Hollywood would try to convince you there's never been a strong, female character in movies before 2005 when they were invented. :)
"...how are you gonna get past that? The Force!..."
I know you're young, but believe it or not there _was_ a time that spending fifteen minutes learning a brand new power you only ever _heard_ of a couple days ago wasn't enough to make you an expert in it. And there was _even_ a time it took time and training and practice to be able to do things with a new skill or ability, it wasn't just 'oo, I just learned this existed so now I can do everything just because'. Not every character is a Mary-Sue. At least Luke, here, has _some_ experience with the Force, and actually using it, prior to the big pay-off at the end.
"...she knows they were being tracked..."
Yeah, it's one of the _really dumb things_ about this movie. If you were sure you were being tracked, go _anywhere else,_ then get a _different ship,_ leave, do it two more times, and _then_ go to your secret base.
    "...he does care..."
Yeah, C-3PO and R2D2 are an old married couple. Get on each other's nerves, fight and bicker, but they care.
"...I did think it was kind of a gimmick how Darth Vader was the only one to survive..."
Well, if any others _did_ survive it wouldn't much matter. There could have been half a dozen survivors but only Vader _mattered._ But I agree, it _is_ something of a trope.
So! Now that you're done this, and when you finish with the other two, may I suggest the following: Look at a poster of Raiders of the Lost Ark, look up the phrase "Beam Me Up, Scotty", and then watch these movies in this order: The Wizard of Oz (1939), Planet of the Apes (1968), Alien (1979), Spaceballs (1987).
    Have a nice day!

There was no CGI in the 1970s miss. All the ships were real models built by model makers and real backdrops including matte paintings and simple blue/green screen add-ins. The lasers and lightsaber effects were rotoscoped onto to the film images. Everything else were large, actual practical effects, sets, ships, interiors, vehicles etc.
Only a few monsters and outdoor droids in a couple very brief Mos Eisley spaceport exterior shots were CGI and they were added in much later in the 1990s for the special edition release which you watched.

You have the advantage of hindsight. What seems obvious now was not obvious when this movie was being made. I saw this movie in 1977 when it first came out. We had NO idea that there was going to be a "next one". Only Lucas had that kind of faith in his movie. Most of us thought, well, that was great but did NOT expect a sequel. The studio didn't think so either because they signed away marketing rights to Lucas that made him ultra-rich. Very few of the main actors in this movie thought it was going to be as popular as it was, either. As fantastic as it seems now, Star Wars was not a sure thing and the stuff that is now part of well-known popular culture was sprung on us as a surprise.

1:57 ok so this movie is 19 years after the events of (the prequel) episode III, the ancient galactic republic together with galactic liberty has fallen!! as result of the Clone Wars, and what emerges from its ashes to replace it is a new galactic political super-power which has consolidated the remaining supporting star systems (political bodies) into unified Empire, controlled by the most ancient evil (thought extinct) - the Sith, unbeknownst .. all other star systems which fell away are sympathetic & loyal to foundations of a free republic and its ancient protectors (the Jedi) which have all but been exterminated, closely untaken by the emperors most loyal servant Darth Vader, ..
this story begins with the empire in hot pursuit of rebel spies who managed to steal the plans for the most powerful weapon “The Death Star (planet killer) as the movie unfolds it explains that the only chance to restore freedom lies within the bloodline of the Skywalker family who are literally … the last Hope ..

As far as the effects of the time. Unless you are watching the pre-digitally enhanced ones, then SOME of the effects were updated in the 90's. You can find comparisons on youtube I think where they show the original and the digitally enhanced side by side. Do not get me wrong. The effects they developed in the 7-'s when this was made were still impressive and ground breaking for their time.

Star Wars is so brilliant because it’s underlying themes and meaning can be derived by anyone. The story-telling by George Lucas is done so well that most things aren’t directly explained so that each person can really draw their own meaning. Sure, it’s in space, but it’s more fantasy/opera than science-fiction.
I hope you enjoy your journey to a galaxy far, far away :)

Back then, visual effects were achieved with models, miniatures, matte paintings, animatronics, stop-motion photography and lighting tricks.
The next film takes place 3 years later.

Also, droids take up customer space in the establishment, can't consume beverages, etc. and can be used to record private conversations. The android bounty hunter 4-Lom used to just order a drink and never touch it, but of course, pay for it. Just to do his job.

19:41 "Why don't they serve droids?"
    In a word? *Racism...*
The flip side of that is nobody pays them any mind... they're beneath notice so nobody thinks that one of them could be The Frodo that's running around with the Death Star plans. At the beginning when the ran across that hallway and nobody shot them, it was because everybody were too busy shooting at the *real* enemies who could shoot back!
But yeah, the overall treatment of droids in this series is upsetting and it gets worse over time.
It's not quite "Blade Runner" but The Star Wars universe is ripe for a robot rebellion. It's subtle here at first, but by the time you get to the newer movies and shows, it's clear that treatment of droids is one of the more fcuked up things about this world, and it may blow up in their faces soon, Matrix/Terminator style...

Easter Egg. In the detention block scene, Luke says "Prisoner transfer from cell block 1138". This is in reference to Lucas's first feature length film, THX 1138.
The red robot that blows a gasket is actually an R5, not an R2 like the blue one. The R5 is made up of cheaper parts - Owen likely chooses it for that reason, and because he has free labor from Luke to fix it. The R2 was much mire reliable but much more expensive.
And in spite of Threepio's claims, Artoo is the older one by a fair number of years. When Owen tells Luke to take Artoo and "have its memory wiped", that essentially kills the being the droid becomes by experience. By this point, Artoo actually is malfunctioning to some extent since he has avoided memory wipes for several decades, and as hevis at the core a computer, he has developed some behaviors other members of the R2 product line would consider embarrassing or even scandalous. He even openly questions his owner's instructions, and defies orders. Threepio has been wiped infrequently, and his tendency to babble is symptomatic of that.
In Star Wars Legends, Luke gives both droids manumission, giving them freedom, or more accurately, self-ownership. They remain property under Galactic Law, but are each their own property. For reasons one will see later, organic people are leery of droids that are too independent.

As a fan I am going to suggest you watch one of the stand alone movies which does not start with "Star Wars", either before you watch episode V, or after episode VI. The movie Rogue One ties directly to the first three episodes so much, they actually used scenes which were filmed back in 1975/1976 but never were used. They did have to CGI several faces onto actors, because they had aged so much, but you will see actors from episode IV and VI, in Rogue One.
