    That was very informative! I liked the amp leakage part, there can be a big difference between a oem rectifier/regulator and an aftermarket one. That's really good to know.

    I have to say Shane your videos are the best i have come across online. I Have invested quite some time to watch all your videos after i stumbled across your video on broken bolts. After a bad stint with a problem first bike i got myself a KTM 640 and hunted for the service manual so can do all repairs myself as i love wrenching even though im an accountant by profession lol. Your videos coupled with the manual made my life soo much easier as right now im testing through the charging system because bike is killing batteries. Keep up the good work, on a personal note i thank you & really appreciate the advice and the detailed videos.

    Shane,
    The information in your video helped me troubleshoot my Triumph America. The unregulated output of alternator sealed the fate of the old regulator rectifier.

    Awesome demo! Would love to have seen one on a Harley bagger considering that I have one that the charging System is consistently dropping from 14 V to 12 V on the gauge. I can guess that also has to do with the voltage regulator, hopefully not the stater too.

    I really enjoy your video. I learnt so many useful thing. What does it mean if the current voltage is bellow 20v at the stator output? (if resistance ok: stator ko or the magnetic side (don't know the word in English) Is it necessary to disconnect the stator from regulator to test the stator output voltage.(as the Last test you did) thanks for feed back & take care

    Hi. I am having a problem with the charging system. no charge is getting to the battery. Battery checked and fine. Stator charging at each coil as per manual but when checking resistance ( Continuity) to the negative of the battery I do get continuity. 13:28 on video. Could this be the problem. Because I do not want to change the rectifier/regulator and possibly cook it.
    Thanks

    I don't know if you still are posting on this but I NEED HELP.. I have the stator and rectifier replaced and when I test the positive terminal on the rectifier when its running it gets 1.5-3.5 volts by itself depending on how I rev it. HOWEVER no matter how I hook it up to my battery directly or to my main fuse as the manual states, it will not do anything to the battery. The volts just drop and drop.
    I have tried several high end batteries and none of them will take the juice coming out of the rectifier
    What do I do????

    Great video. Thanks. Noticed on one of your videos that the AC voltage increases to maximum at 3000rpm but then drops to 0vac when the rpm is increased beyond that. Is that normal? Why dos it go to 0vac after 3000rpm? cheers

    • @How2Wrench
      @How2Wrench  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello. I'm going to guess the meter connection came loose as the AC starts building as soon as a magnet is spun past a wire and increases with RPM until a point at which the wire size and length has no more ability to produce more. A few other design factors go into play as well.

    My rectifier passed the reverse bias tests as I got OL on my multimeter for both positive and negative wires. But when I did the forward bias test with the positive lead of the multimeter probed into the 3 yellow wires, I got 0.45 ohm for each one of them. But when I did the forward bias test with the negative lead of the multimeter probed into the 3 yellow wires, two of the yellow wires showed 0.1 ohm each and one yellow wire shows 0.09 ohm. Is the rectifier still ok or is it malfunctioning already?

    Why is that Reg/rec drawing so much power with the key off though? Couldn’t you just run the regular 12v through switched power to eliminate that issue?

      The demonstration is on how to test OEM setups. So this example is a stock Japanese common charging system set up. Another point is this works very well and they gift in this video is that it is the answer to a huge struggle and hard to diagnose issue.

      That’s a great question for Shane directly! We are just the social media team. Shane does answer questions when he get's back around to non members eventually so hang tight, FYI >>>> he does member ones daily!
      He just returned from overseas training techs and his inbox is slammed with requests. He is scheduling time each day again to answer techline orders. He does not have the bandwidth to provide free email replies as his schedule is full with shop customers, training schedules, and one on ones.
      There's good news though! Shane has 2 solutions for you. One is a deep dive one-on-one with him with video, email and phone support. The other is a "quick fan support" option when it's a quick answer and just helps support the time for him to stop wrenching or training and get you in the direction that a free video had you close. Links to each are below. Hope this message makes sense to you as a decent human being that also works for a living and gets it!
      Make it a great day!

    Could someone explain this to me:
    At 13:24 they're testing ohms between the negative and the stator. I am measuring 0.00 óhms. what is the problem?

    • @herkko61
      @herkko61 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Your stator winding is connected (short circuited) to the the body (ground) of your stator. The insulation of the wire has failed. The stator can not produce enough AC power to the system. Check every two wires' AC voltage of the three wires coming from stator (13:40 in this video) on idle revs and on 4000 revs: some are ok (70-80 AC V), some are not (like 10 AC V). You need a new stator or you can rewind the old stator.

    • @MrAnaheimification
      @MrAnaheimification 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      He says “0.00” indicates there is NO continuity between the ground and the stator. Which is what you want. If, however, your stator was bad and you had continuity (any number greater than 0.00) you’d likely be smelling melted wires.

    12:25 you say something about leaving the aligators ne to take out any potential resistances.
    Can you explain this better?
    I have this situation and I am REALLY confused.
    I have been doing the same test as you are doing except that I am using the needle probes to check for resistances and I am getting variable numbers between 1.5 to 2.0 ohms, the service manual says it should be between 0.1 to 1.0 ohms
    NOW, after I saw your video using aligators I also used one myself and I am getting exactly 0.6 ohms on all 3 wires.
    WHY? Why changing from needle to aligator give me such error? Can you tell me? Thanks

      remember that before using any type of leads you should check and see if they are in good operable condition... check for resistance between leads and see if they can conduct 12V with no interference. It is very important to double check all electrical equipment/tools. I have spent hours diagnosing a fault when I realize my voltmeter or leads are not in correct operation.

    • @felcas
      @felcas 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oscar Ronquillo what you mean with leads? the battery conectors or the probe points? What is that?

    • @felcas
      @felcas 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oscar Ronquillo I also changed my R/R with a MOSFET one from rick's motorsportelectrics. Now I get some voltage out of the R/R but it is not enought, I get 12.85v and only at @5000rpm but manual say 15v. In practice, I am not geting my battery charged. It is discharging at a very low rate.
      Batery is new!

      Sorry... by leads I mean probes or alligator clips...

      now what color of wires do you have coming from your stator? And how many wires coming out/in of your rectifier/regulator?

    I think the manual is wrong - 0.1mA is nothing... 1A perhaps, or 1mA.
