Nice work folks. While going through your steps to do a dynamic stator test my stator performed just as you explained for a three phase stator. AC voltages at example RPM's. The thing that left me stumped was my Shop Manual states that an AC voltage reading should be between 10 and 12 VAC. Not giving any engine speed. At idle it is producing 17 VAC. Increased engine speeds also increased VAC. Should I assume this as a typo and direct my attention towards the rectifier? This is on a 2005 Bombardier Outlander 330 HO 4x4.

Thank you for this video!! Misdiagnosed my stator as being bad before moving on to testing the regulator/rectifier on my 2016 KTM 500 EXC. Hadn't opened the case up yet and this set of tests confirmed my rectifier/regulator was still good even though I had a bad pin in the plug.

this goes for street scooters as well. 150CC and down usually a 1 phase. some 3 phase. I had one go bad on a scooter that showed working correctly until a long drive at night and the volts dropped. was the regulator heating up and maybe a diode or scr going open. great basic test! 6 diodes on 3 phase. getting a service manual for your bike ETC is a big help.

If only there was a good wiring diagram and specifications from the manufacturer we could actually know what it should read. Lab scope pattern. NO way. they have them but would never share them with the public to help repair their products. Thank you Rocky for all you do for the general public. I find all the instructions you give are very accurate. Electronics is my specialty but without known good specs and patterns it's all guessing!

This method is valid only for simple rectifiers. A rectifier/regulator may have extra components in line with the positive output of the bridge rectifier preventing the measurement of half of the diodes.

Hi folks. I have a Honda VF750f Interceptor which I am restoring. My issue is this , having got the bike running, after a while I noticed the battery was starting to cook so I did some electrical tests and found that the battery was being charged at 18.5 volts. I did multi meter tests on the alternator and regulator and found the alternator to be fine but the regulator was not. So replacing the regulator and battery solved the problem. the battery is new but I've used a second hand regulator I had, but it works. My problem know is that in running the engine up to temperature to then adjust carb settings I had the seat off of the bike and when I put my hand on the seat rail above the regulator and touched the regulator with my finger and got severely burnt. I now the regulator runs worm but surely not that hot. I noticed that as from standard the regulator is mounted on a stiff plastic board and not on a metal plate which I would have thought would of acted as a heat sink. Should it run this hot , or do you think this is why the previous regulator ended up over charging ? What could you recommend to solves this suspected over heating.
    Many thanks, Mike.

I’m doing this test on a Linhai 2018 400cc UTV.
It’s a brand new rectifier. The forward bias test (black lead to positive, testing connector with red lead) resulted in 530 on each connector. Way outside your proposed range of 0.3-0.5. So… what does this mean? I’m testing this because this rectifier gets super hot when in use.

Does it matter if all the forward bias readings on the positive side are 0.1 when all the readings on the negative side are 0.45? In other words, should the readings be close to the same for both the positive and negative? This is a Honda regulator.

I had thought that the light brown with red trace was positive but when I do this I get no reading between it and the 3 yellows. If I use the brown I get a consistent reading between it and all 3 yellows. Does that mean my positive is the three brown and the light brown with red is my neutral?

One more test that should be performed while your in diode mode is test positive and negative leads of stator and make sure it reads “OL”. That should be the first test in fact, as my bike stopped suddenly no warning and the rectifier melted inside , and not until I performed this test against a good / new unit I wouldn’t have known. Also the rectifier past all the other tests so according to your video it would have been deemed good... FYI

Sorry we didn't get back to you sooner. Did you get the problem fixed? What machine is this on, year make and model? I want to look at the wiring diagram. Unplug the reg/rec and check each wire coming out of it to make sure they are all insulated from the body of the reg/rec. I think that is the only test a manual won't show but if you have continuity on any of those to ground then it's bad. I've only seen it where the positive to the reg/rec body is in the K ohms or Mega ohms and drains the battery over night. Have you checked the voltage at the battery with and without the machine running? With it running, rev the engine a up and make sure the voltage doesn't go over 14.7 ish Volts. If it goes above, then the reg/rec is bad. Sounds like you already checked the diodes, so if the other checks are ok then start looking for a short to ground somewhere.

Hey! Thanks for the video I have done the test on the rectifier and the stator. Both the stator and the rectifier pass the tests. Putting a voltmeter on my battery and getting the rpm up to 5k like stated in your other videos you have posted the battery voltage does not fluctuate at all. I also disconnected the red wire from the starter solenoid and tested the voltage coming from it with the engine running and it was very erratic going anywhere from 12 to 14.5 volts but as soon as I reconnect it back to the starter solenoid it basically flatlines and there is no change in battery voltage. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you!

I know this video has been around for a while but I’m testing the reg Rec on an 02 Ducati monster 750Si.e.
It has 3 yellow wires so sayings it’s 3 phase. On the other plug it’s got 2 red and 2 green.
Should the test be run forward and reverse for each red and green wire across the yellows like this video?
So did the tests off both the + and - sides and they passed. So guessing it’s good.
My reason for testing is a slow drain on the batt. I have had a swollen batt also. I replaced it. I have to put the bike on a charger if I’m not driving every couple days.
I tried an amp test for parasitic draw but it must be so low the meter didn’t see it.
    What a pain

Great explanation, but that all seems very complicated. I think I'll just take my bike to the shop and pay for it

Hello. Negative lead on positive side I get following reading : .553,.553,.544
Positive lead on negative side : .557,.521,.551.
Are the small differences indicating faulty rectifier?
    Thanks!

Just went through the test on a voltage regulator on a 1998 Honda Foreman 400. Tests went well and the video was very informative. Thank You.
Im still having troubles with the charging system I THINK!!!!!!! Crank the bike and the fan comes on. That could be the fan contol or oil temp switch. I understand that. My issue is that as you rev/increase the throttle so does the speed of the fan. The fan speed decreases as the the throttle decreases also. Upon increasing the throttle I also see voltage at the batterry increase. I have seen it up to 18.36 volts at the battery and I know this is too high and will damage the battery so I havent ran it long like this.
I was wondering if anyone had any other advice on this problem.
    Thanks

If you haven't already, get the Reg/Rec replaced and test the battery as well to make sure it is OK. The voltage at the battery should stop rising around 14.7 V no matter what the RPM is. If the voltage goes very much over that (15 or more volts) then the regulator part of the Reg/Rec ins't working properly. That should take care of the fan speed problem too. I hope this helps

Hello, Thanks for the video. I have checked my rectifier as shown in the video and is found to be in good condition. However, when connected to the stator and the battery, the charging voltage goes over 16V
So, i disconnected the rectifier from the battery and checked the voltage and it reads out in AC..
Can a bad battery damage the rectifier?
STATOR: the voltage from each phase gives out 19V AC and goes upto 60V at 5000rpm so i feel it is good...
    Please help

    Hi sir
    My question is
When the Burgman 650 bike is running for 2 minutes, it the regulator too hot to touch by hand?
Is this temperature a problem or is it normal?

My 2017 yz450f regulator rectifier has 2 wires coming out of it a red and black one, no matter what ohm setting i put the multimeter on it shows “0L “ but on the other wires that it plugs into “the stator connnection it shows a reading on the “20 ohm” setting.
does that means that could be the cause of my NO SPARK situation , keep in mind this bike doesnt have a battery

Will the rectifier cause my atv to show OV 17.5 or so?
It will be at normal voltage then start getting higher untill it reaches 17.5

hello, as you have shown, the regulator looks solid but no energy output, no voltage. The stator is newly clung and rugged, the outputs have ~ 50V. Is there another test method? motorhome Ktm duke 390 2016.

Very good; does this only test the RECTIFIER(S) part? Could the unit stil be bad on the regulator section?(of course,if the motor runs, you just slap the voltmeter leads on the batt.terminals to find out)

sometimes R/r pass all these test but they are still not working. the best way is to borrow from a friends and try it.

Hello rocky mountain, can we also verify a 3 phase rr unit by looking at the pins on the plug/ port in the rrunit. Doesn't 3 pin on the rrunit mean 3 phase charging system. I.e the top 3 pins for the battery positive, negative, don't know what the middle pin do, and the bottom two pin for the alternator. Am i right or is there something u can add to it. Thanks

Is there a way to test if the stator is bad by using the wires without having to pull the fly wheel off just to check? My voltage is reading around 18 when giving it throttle I tested the voltage regulator like in the video and it seems to be ok

My plug to the rectifier melted so i cut the wire and spliced it ..would that be consider a break in the wire and cause over charged to my battery ?
