Nurses use it to immobilize difficult patients to the point that any patient over 70 has a much greater risk of becoming much worse. Morphine can very easily over relax an elderly patient to the point they have a difficult time breathing, hyperventilating causing massive amounts of carbon dioxide to enter the blood.
Morphine is killing more patients than cancer, car accidents, suicides and homicides combined in our nation's hospitals. Where elderly go to get better right up until their nurse has had enough of a patient telling them they want to go home. Or my favorite the doctor prescribes Lasix (water pill) but forgets to reduce the prescribed amount so the nurse and the patient do not have to get up every twenty minuets to go to the bathroom/pee.

@@mychannelnotyours Morphine causes unnecessary deaths and should not be used by a nurse to sedate/murder elderly patients especially late at night and early morning.

@@donemigholzjr.7344 Nurses don’t just give morphine without a doctor’s order and doctors don’t make order without the consent of the patients…hospice patients most likely ,100% consented this way to comfort them when they’re dying.
As a Nurse,I work with hospice patients and the only way to give them comfort through that transition is to give them morphine….and I personally would want the same way if it happens to me when I’m in their situation…also I hope someone would hold my hand until I take my last breath as I always want to do when my patients actively dying and family members are freaking out and heartbroken .I don’t know about other Nurses….but that’s just my personal opinion.

Nurses can't increase morphine doses without a doctor prescribing it. I don't think you know what you're talking about. My mom worked critical care for years. Don't automatically blame the nurses just because they're the only ones you see.

My friend died of hospice induced overdose of morphine. Another friend fired hospice and lived 2 years longer after a week of morphine induced sleep/ coma. Morphine abuse and over prescription death are real.

Thank you for your comment. Dr Vinay, at 6:35: Well used, morphine becomes a very important part of the treatment of people having a long lasting disease and especially the one near the end, but it has to be well prescribed (...)

@Strange Lane yes of course they do. It's called "snowing'". They tried to do to my elderly father who had a bed sore on his foot. I said 'please get a wound nurse. it needs to be treated' I had a fight on my hands but bed sore healed and Dad lived another 2 years able to get out of bed on a walker. So yes they do, do it on purpose.

If they gave it to me... Yup! I am allergic to morphine. I found this out when I was in sick kids hospital Toronto when I was 13. I was having pancreatic attacks due to stones in my gulbladder "one of the stones got stuck in the bile duct to my pancreas ". My heart rate dropped, I started violently vomiting and dry heaving. Morphine is out of your body in just a few hours. The stronger the drug, the faster it leaves you. So you didn't have morphine in you by the time you left the hospital. The rest of it was just in your brain 🧠.

@@debrahjohns586 not really it works to stop pain. You cannot get addicted to it at the hospital. And if you're in hospice it lets you relax. You are not over dosed. If you have some one in a lot of pain from cancer they will die relaxed and won't be in pain. The cancer is what killed them. But people tend to forget that for some reason. My wife had breast cancer and after treatment the cancer spread very fast. I took care of her and I could see the life of her going away every day. Hospice came in her last three days. She was able to be awake and talk to people. She was on fentanyl and morphine. She was able to be pain free. Until you see someone in horrible pain. You won't understand what happens when you give them drugs.

@ericwithers6552 I'm sorry to hear about your wife. As morphine is usually given in hospice or in end of life care, somehow the accosiation is that the morphine caused the death. There of course, is always going to be a last dose. It can make the difference between a painful difficult death and a peaceful one
