I’ve seen a few of these predators who refused to talk to the police (their right to remain silent) and they either plead guilty to reduced charges and got probation or had the charges dropped completely. As soon as they start talking to detectives they’re sealing their own fate and signing up for a prison sentence. Dumb asses. Not that I care, they should be locked up.

I think the whole ‘talking to the police without an attorney’ thing is strictly to provide some sort of defense or explanation to the people watching. This guy knows his family, friends, and coworkers will see this, so this act he’s putting on is for them, to prove how “regretful” he is and how little responsibility he has in this. Not only is he narcissistic and a deviant, but also probably a sociopath: the level of manipulation on display here is off the charts.

    • @FastEddieee
      @FastEddieee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

excellent point. Even if it would be in his best *legal* interest to immediately lawyer up, he must know how that would look in the court of public opinion. I agree that is suggests a level of manipulation that extends further than the usual.

Online fantasy my ass. The conversation alone was felonious. He said he’d changed his mind when it got real, on the drive. But then a moment later he say that he’d changed his mind yesterday while he was talking to the decoy. So which is it, Jim?? He also uses the “I was bored” or just wanted “to get out of the house” defense. How dull and unimaginative. He’s young and healthy and can’t think of anything else to do. At the very least pop in a video game. I bet in the break room at lunch he was about as interesting to talk to as a slice of white bread. Online fantasy. Shit.

*BIGGEST MISTAKE [Pre-interrogation]:* Talking to a minor and _attempting to meet_ a minor.
Now he got caught. The next mistakes he made:
Mistake number 2: Using words like *“kid,” “violate,” and “[her age range] 13/14.”*
Mistake number 1: Placing blame on the victim.
And the *TOP LEVEL MISTAKE* he made: Talking to the police!

@14:44 bro... you made me choke on my chocolate milk with that Stacey impression.
Also from my observations, rather ironically, most people who’d have the sense to request a lawyer are those who have either had prior engagements with the police, have heard this advice from friends/relatives with experience, or have an academic understanding of the criminal justice/legal system. I don’t think your average person from suburbia who rarely interacts with the police would know to do this, in fact, they might be under the impression that ‘being honest’ would win them favor with the arresting officer.
I think Rutherford falls into the latter camp, obv. Sure, he’s a teacher, but I doubt his studies included criminal justice... and I also doubt that he’s had any prior experience with police.

They ALL go for the "it was just an online fantasy" excuse, as if that somehow isn't also gross to do. And I get so tired of hearing people say "well it's just online, it's not real!" (guys also say that when I've caught them sexting other women and it's infuriating) Yes, it is real, that's another real person on the other side of the screen, and what they're doing affects them emotionally, for real. It's not some kind of AI bot, it's a real person. That makes it real.

  • @nowandaround312

Some clarifications that you, and probably some people watching this, were wondering about:
He was indeed read his rights when he was arrested.
He stupidly asked whether he was being charged during the interview because he'd asked Chris earlier whether he could just be put in a treatment program instead of prison and Chris said he wasn't sure which probably made him believe it was possible so he just held onto that desperate hope. I hope he did get counseling while in jail but boy, you could have gotten help on your own, you don't get to skip the punishment just because _now_ you're willing to do it.
He didn't hesitate to admit he knew how old she was because he'd already admitted it to Chris lol, and probably because he knew it's in the chat log and figured the "I misread it" defense wouldn't work when he'd seen her on webcam. He also admitted that he knew she was a kid because he used that word on TCAP as well.

Being read your Miranda Rights does not mean that you are under arrest, it is used anytime you speak to police regarding a legal matter. Miranda rights are there to let you know that you could potentially incriminate yourself if you speak to them. It also covers the cops so that lawyers can’t say “he didn’t know, he thought he had to ask.” Blah blah blah
