@@Mathemagician_45 Well, it was going okay the progress was steady, but I decided to break from Japanese for awhile untill I'm fluent in Spanish then I will continue. There was a point we're I could say quite a bit in Japanese I don't think I ever got fully passed beginner but I definitely knew some intermediate concepts and grammer such as conjugations ect.
I like watching the videos without subtitles on for a full immersion experience. I sometimes slow down the video a little, come back a few seconds earlier if I didn't understand well. That way I learn to actually understand the language instead of translating it, and Asami-sensei does a great job to help me do that ! Thank you for the great content, I can't think of anything better to start immersing myself right at the beginning of my learning journey

This is super cool. I teach middle school Spanish in the U.S.: establishing the vocabulary in the common language then storytelling/TPRS/circling... it is so fun to experience it in a language that I do not know at all. Love this video.
This is really well made. Thank you so much. I will use this a lot. An option for Japanese subs would be more appreciated than English tho. This is obviously meant to be understood without knowing the words so it would benefit me more to have Japanese subs (English is only distracting and o have to watch without). Maybe some people prefer the English so an option would be nice:) thanks for your hard work;)

Thanks for the question. "Ga" and "wa" have very different functions and it will take time for you to get a feel for it. "ga" determines the relationship of the noun to the verb, and "wa" either introduces a new topic or changes the topic within the shared understanding of the two speakers. The main thing at first is just to pay attention to the context, without worrying too much about "knowing for sure" or being able to produce the right sentence in the right situation. That part will come with time. The two contexts here are very different from each other. "Niwatori ga iru" was said at the beginning of the video, pointing to an image. That whole situation shapes the language choice. For the rest of the video, "wa" is used a lot, not just with niwatori but with all the other animals, because now two people are directing each other's attention to specific parts of their shared understanding of the situation, or introducing new topics.

This comment is a year old but for anyone else who might want to know, は is the topic marker ex, “as for Niwatori…” or “speaking of Niwatori…”. が is the subject marker, which is marking the person/thing doing the action of the sentence. We can think of the two as は: “As for Niwatori, he exists” vs が: “Niwatori is (the doer of) existing”.

Asami should be speaking since she's a native speaker. Why would you put a non-native accent into a learners ears and brain especially in the early stages where they don't know better? This is not recommended at all. Sorry I don't know the man's name but his accent is very foreign. He never studied Japanese phonetics or even attempts to sound Japanese. This is a great concept but you are doing learners a disservice.
Hi WanderingDoc. My name is Hyogen for the purposes of these videos. Our videos are like a group class, where the viewer participates with one other student: me. Students who learn together are always exposed to each other's speech, and even people who learn alone have to hear themselves. Human beings are not empty vessels to be filled with input. They are creative and intelligent participants in the learning process. Even young children adjust their own language from seeing others corrected. Our goal is not perfection, but to be able to enjoy human connection through language as quickly as possible, in a low stress environment. Pronunciation develops naturally at the dictates of the need to communicate. I don't think students should try to sound like native speakers. They should only be clear enough to be understood. We leave true phonological mastery to opera singers and language enthusiasts, and for that they'll need specialized study and probably even coaching. One thing I want to comment on: its a bad idea to use subtitles, as the brain naturally drowns out the target language and prioritizes what it can understand. I'd recommend watching over with subtitles ONCE, and then REWATCHING without. A study done with spanish students learning english showed that watching movie, tv and film with spanish subtitles provided a ZERO percent improvement in the target language, watching with no subtitles provided a SEVEN percent improvement, and then finally watching with english subtitles on a english movie provided a 17 percent improvement! But at the end of the day, it boils down to personal preference.
I agree with your recommendation Ryan. We suggest that people should feel 100% comfortable with each lesson with no subtitles before moving on. That means being able to respond to the questions. The subtitles can however help to ease into it and clear up confusion. I want to point out that the findings of that study might be a bit misleading when applied to this lesson, which is for complete beginners. In the words of the researchers: "This finding supports the hypothesis that subtitles in the original language can be used to retune the link of speech-sounds with perceptive categories, so that *intermediate to advanced* English learners can adapt to English sounds in a more efficient fashion." (my emphasis) For a learner of Japanese to experience what those students experienced they would need a strong foundation in Japanese and to be familiar with the Japanese writing system. I would agree with Ryan if you subtitled everything you say, but you don't. I am thrilled that after watching these beginner lessons once, I can listen a second time without the subtitles and comprehend everything!

I think it might be helpful to put the Japanese characters as well as the romanji. Also two name suggestions for the lion are Riku or John.
Just a little warning, ローマ字 (rōmanji) can introduce a strong accent when speaking japanese do to how the mind will interpret the romanized characters.
It's better to avoid Romanji as fast as you can.

You can easily learn Japanese accent in an hour it is the most easy part of the language. Learn the basic of the language skills first.
