I am an artist living and working in France. I learned the techniques of the Atelier of the Nineteenth century and now I try to share some of my knowledge with the rest of the world, because I think that beauty still has an important role to play in artistic creation. I do mostly drawing and oil painting, and my goal is always to provide techniques, thoughts and explanations that can be useful to anyone, from beginners to more advanced artists.

Dont start with technique, start with intention. I had to pause the video here because that's the single best advice I've ever heard. I know a lot of people here applaud you and thank you for your videos but I truly hope you know that you are.... having trouble phrasing this... you are wise in ways i dont think you realize. The wisdom you are imparting is .... comforting that extends beyond paint and graphite. It is making so many people happy. I just wanted to point out the gravity of your efforts. Thank you so much for this

Thank you for this series! This is exactly what i need at this stage. I learned how to paint and how to draw since a very young age. People back then always comment on how "talented" or "gifted" i was, and that destroyed me. After I didn't get into Art school, I gave up drawing completely. All the supplies sits in my closet collecting dust. And now I am 26 years old, its been 10 years since I actually completed any art work. I have already came to a resolution with myself about how I am actually just a regular person who happens to slightly better than a complete beginner at drawing, nothing more. Now I just want to get back into painting and drawing as a hobby, because just like reading, its beneficial for the mind. But after picking up my pencils, i dont know where to start. For once i realized that drawing is not like driving, you can actually forget how. So i watched beginner videos, but have an incredibly hard time follow through with all of them. I know i have to accept that at this stage, nothing good will come out of me for a few tries. Your video helps me tremendously with my mentality. Thank you for that

If this helps in any way, I had wanted to be an artist after high school, and was told I was pretty gifted at the time as well, but was also told I should go into something more practical, so I went to college for Graphic Design. Which I hated. I stopped making art for maybe 20 years, figuring there was no point. Around the time I turned 40, my aunt gave me two boxes of art supplies that had come from my grandfather, and one day I just picked them up and started again. And I was terrible. At first. I beat myself up a lot. But I kept going. Now I'm 43 and my work is in galleries and I'm doing commissions. I just needed to practice and to fill in some gaps in my knowledge and to try some new things as I felt inspired to. The practice gave me confidence and it didn't take long to get back on the horse. Try starting with painting or drawing the things around you. I started drawing and painting photos I took of my daughter. Random items on my desk. Things like that. I'm glad I didn't give up. Don't give up. :)

G Zheng, me pasó algo parecido. Exitos!

I’m over 60 and have very recently started to paint, the last time was at school. I loved art, I wasn’t good but I do have some talent for creating. I’m just glad I’ve started now as it’s giving me a lot of joy and peace . I wish you all the best in your life’s journey, just try and do what comes to you naturally. You can have a career and still do your art.

Thank you for making this video. Without sounding too sappy ... this video might have changed my artistic career trying to move forward .. my frustrations and loss of focus have been addressed.... I had to watch this numerous times and each time I did I grasped something new. I have somehow lost my inspiration and hope to the point of wanting to pack it all in due to "not knowing where to go next". The worst part is you don't know why you're experiencing these emotions but you were able to put the words to my grief and my fears... my art is my life...not sure if you are a God Believing man... but I have to say.. God Bless you for sharing this... It has Blessed me deeply.

I like your approach to tell something useful while showing the real time work. It's better than useless music backgrounds in my opinion. I just got oil paint two days ago, and rather excited than intimidated. I "paint" virtually, but shortly after starting got the urge to try the real canvas, but I've been resisting that urge for 2 years. So, I gave up, and bought supplies, wasted two canvas already, but still I'm not intimidated, nor disappointed. My special thanks for this video, now I know that the background is hue for the skin tone, and what direction I should move from it.

Thank you for all the kindness about remembering us how selective we should be, all the time. Because we can have inspirational masters, than deal with the technics we need it in order to understand plastically theire language..but we always start another line of decisions when we must abandom the way of them, sometimes is very difficult to understand where is the line when our individual patterns and our intentions are constructed.

Thank you Florent! This discussion was very, very helpful. I am sure that there are so many of us that feel stuck...aimless. I didn't really see how I was scattering my focus until you mentioned choosing something to emulate from our favourite artists. This helps...you suddenly realize you have too many varied and unrelated "likes" when it comes to art. Narrowing the focus to 5 and then choosing from that pool allows you to evaluate what it is you are wanting to represent in your own work. My five included a landscape master, a botanical master, an illustration master, and two old world masters! I suddenly saw the problem was that I had expectations that would look DREADFUL if you put them all together! This is something I had never considered... The separateness of my own preferences may be one of the main problems with knowing where to begin. I think most people want to be able to draw "everything" but you would never expect that from any other hobby, or profession. Even actors, singers and dancers must make a style choice. It feels so simple and yet it really is profound to think about. I so enjoy your points of view and opinions and I have experienced many of the "technical" arguments in past classes. I agree, it does make you wonder what is "not" being said! Thank you for helping the lost and misguided...and taking time away from your own life to enrich and clear paths for us! You are more important and special than you can know! Thank you again, and can't wait until next lesson! Have a wonderful week ahead and stay well!!! 👏🎨🖌️🖼️🤗

It's unbelievably easy to get caught up in looking at tutorials, etc One will say do not trace, others say nothiing wrong at all with that. Others get incredibly complex with skin color mixes. Others use 3 primaries. Some great artists of the past didn't have accurate skin tones. I don't know why I still , after years, feel bad about tracing for example. Their are many videos telling you how some of the greatest artist's use tracing techniques.

If I may add to the "learning the wrong way" advice: just because you learn something "the wrong way" for one thing doesn't mean it's wrong for everything. Knowledge gained in the "wrong way" can be repurposed and be the right way for something.
I'll invent an example of using a special bristle brush, fan brush or super fine liner brush to paint hair/fur: one could say the "wrong" way might be to use the liner brush to paint every individual strand because it's inefficient with time and effort compared to other brushes. However, the skill and knowledge gained from "doing it wrong" can prove to be super useful when you need to use a fine liner to paint long and fine strokes in a way that the other brushes can't. Even if creating something doesn't teach you something new, it affirms what you already know.
I suppose the fear of learning g something wrong though is the stress of breaking the bad habit. It can be difficult, but I still stand behind that telling yourself the knowledge is being repurposed rather than thrown away allows your brain to be more accepting of the "correct" information rather than clinging to what it knows and being skeptical of the new information.

Hi thanks for your insights and great advice. I definitely have a couple of problems that snowball into one. I studied design way back in the 90s (I have a BDes), but I really wanted to do fine art/painting but didn’t feel good enough, whatever that means. I have been drawing and using watercolour paints on and off for years, but just over a year ago I decided to stop running away from what I wanted to do and took up oil painting with the help of many You Tube tutorials. Earlier this year I kind of did what you advised in this video and began looking into various painters, analysing what I liked. PP Rubens came out on top as the style of painterly magician that I would most like to be like (wouldn’t we all 😆). The problem is, my natural style just doesn’t seem to bend that way and I can’t tell if it’s hours, weeks, years of practice needed or if indeed, no amount of practice will take me anywhere close to the vision in my head. I’m not talking about talent or skill, because even though the end results don’t meet my hopes, I can see that some of them have evidence of some level of skill. Now we mix in distraction from other artists, on Instagram, FB, YT, art sites or just art books in general. I go off on tangents because I’m impressed by a piece of work or style of work and think “aha! I think I’d like to make a piece of work in that style/similar composition/lighting” etc. The end result is nearly always dissatisfaction, because of course I’m not the other artist, I’m me. I have a fear of figure drawing (stemming from art school because I always felt incompetent) and probably for this reason I sit more comfortably with still life (and receive most praise for my still life painting), and yet it’s figures I really want to be good at, sometimes it all seems like trying to catch clouds in a net. I imagine I’m definitely not alone with these problems.
I hope you are having a lovely festive season. Take care. Val

Very interesting talk! Unfortunately is a bit of "first the egg or the chicken" as you can surely getting inspired looking at other artists but you will only be able to "parroting" them in an hotchpotch which inevitably will not not look good. As well, as you rightly say, if you are only concentrated on technique you will end up making good works but with little content/meaning. I tend to believe that technique is still the beginning phase, and your style will develop with confidence step by step by seriously studying other artists works in a couple years at least. No need to spend 5 years drawing spheres in B+W - just kidding :p - but have met a bit too many people that without even knowing how to draw semi-decently have jumped in to making paintings. Results were poor and many had to go back to the pencils. Surround yourself with Art. Read, study and go visit museums and galleries if you have chances - something good will come up :)

Yeah, the highligt is brigther, therefore the nose seems more plastic, like he had plastic surgery after one of his bar fights, where he tended to kill people(How fucking realistic would that be!) If he had taped his nose, it would be even better, it would give the feeling that the surgery was a few days ago, but the highlight would disappear.
