I finally am able to get emotion into my work and it was not easy to get past the technical stages. Your channel has heavily impacted my work even though it is vastly different in style to my own. I think that philosophical thoughts tend to go hand in hand with the arts... a type of poetry, which is an art form of its own. * I think we as visual artists are just trying to let out and EXPOSE our inner thoughts, endeavoring to communicate to others just "who" we really are inside. I used a stuffed animal to learn the grisaille process followed by glazing. This is really close to that idea. I bet if people used their child's favorite doll, it would work out really well. Its basic human features without the demand for high accuracy to make it look human. And, their kid may love the painting on their wall and they probably wont be picky about minor errors. The happiness would be very rewarding and encourage getting to the next project.
As a beginner to oil paining, this video if excellent and covers everything in a very organized manner. Thank you, Florent. I will try to remember it all. Great demonstration too. So glad I found your channel
Oh a light just turned on! I've been painting for a while and learning all I can since I struggle! Establishing the lightest light and the darkest dark and then add the colors to make the transition. Thank you!!!!

I can not seam to grasp this idea of SEPARATING the two and KEEPING them in their place. I guess in my mind it feels UNTIDY and sloppy!?! 🤔🙄

Great painting, video and instruction. Would you say that painting in oils is more forgiving than other mediums, in terms of, the time it takes to dry? For blending purposes, color mixing etc.
Great vid! I find differentiating in the mid-tones between warms and cools difficult. Mid tones are hard imho. Darkest darks, and lightest lights are relatively easy but thos mid-tones... pfff!

Is that a cane wrapped in tape at its top that you’re leaning your hand on to get the intricate details done? Do you go into this in any of your videos? I’ve been wondering about the best ways to not lean against my wet paintings.🤣 I would love to hear more on this.
It's called a mahlstick (painting stick) and yes, that's exactly what it's used for. You can make it out of anything, some artists use a walking cane so you can use the curved top to hook it onto your painting and just hold it at the bottom with your non-painting hand.
@@InLawsAttic it's a stick with a piece of cloth or leather wrapped on the end. You hold the end of the stick in your non-painting hand, then lean the upper piece wrapped in cloth on the edge of your canvas. That way you can lean your painting hand on the middle part of the stick and thus reach the middle parts of your wet painting. Note: this only works when you're painting standing at the easel. I'm sure you can google this. Good luck!

Hi at the Toning stage, my paint dries too quickly. I use tinner with my oils to put on the canvas but it dries quickly and leaves a mark that doesnt go when I try to rub it with a napkin like you do. Any ideas why please? Im still a beginner in oils
Sounds like thats the case. There is no barrier between the canvas and the paint/wash/tone mix so it just absorbs like a sponge. If you put gesso down first in one or two layers before applying wash it wont absorb as rapidly. And yes it is always necessary for oil painting.
Ok so... I can see where I put dark shading, it gives the appearance of being "concave" (caved in), and the lighting gives the appearance of being "convex", BALLONED OUT... just like that practice piece, the APPLE. 😊 SO... if I can just KEEP that thought in the forefront of my mind... I just MIGHT be able to be SUCCESSFUL in portrait painting... WALLA!! 😅
Hi I was,never taught this at art school and I just knock up paintings. At the end of the day I feel its our,ability to compose original stuff over and above technique. But I now yearn for technique but I never know where to start and I get frustrated and then,create a big mess on the canvas. I create something out of my mess. Artists are terribly perverse.
Things to remind myself to do. My problem is I tend to rush the painting process, too much too soon at the wrong stage of the painting and spend a lot more time going back and reworking it to get the results I want.

Perhaps you didn't gesso correctly or your toning mixture is too thin meaning too much thinner to paint ratio

I am wondering how to really clean my brushes. The turpentine gets nasty after one rinse off anything. How can I get me brushes really clean?
